Managed to watch the highlights of the first two days and my observations are:
- Williamson is a lovely batsman to watch when he is in the groove. He was looking in complete command before he was out. Great for us but a shame for the purist.
- The stats will show day 2 as a win for England but in truth we rode our luck quite a bit. Several streaky shots which could have resulted in wickets but some overly defensive fields (IMO but without any idea of how the game was progressing) leaving gaps where those streaky shots usually fell.
- The NZ catching. My God that was woeful and very costly. If England go on to win, or even if it is a draw, you can look at the dropped sitters on day 2 to find the reason why.
- Though lucky on the day Harry Brook rode his luck and played beautifully in between the odd streaky shot and is a joy to watch. Not as classically elegant as Williamson (or Root for that matter) when on song but very entertaining.

Did we just drop another one?

From CricInfo:
78.6 O'Rourke to Brook, no run
another drop! Oh my, it's Phillips again! He's taken a screamer and dropped two sitters now... this came fast and low at gully, a back-foot flash through the wider line, but straight into his breadbasket. He stooped with his left hand, but couldn't close his fingers around the rebound

This team is a pathetic rabble.
Their ruthlessness in both batting and bowling in the first 2 days of a series is a disgrace. It sets the tone. They will spend the next 3 weeks chasing their tails and leather because of their amateurism. Switched off when it is the most important moments to be switched on.
6 months until Stead goes.
-
@Rapido lol mate. Ease off. I'm all for sensible critique but that's a bit OTT.
Some of this rabble won a WTC not too long ago, and just beat India 3-0 at home.
Their catching has completely let them down and put them in this position, but, if they can get Eng out with a lead not much over 100 on a good wicket they're certainly not out of the game with a couple of nice partnerships.
Sure - we may fold, but this is one of the better Black Caps eras for those of us who've been watching for years.
-
They've been a rabble since the WTC final.
That's the point.
Higher standards. Watching relatively talentless blackcaps teams struggle but also punch above their weight was a pleasure.
Watching a team full of all time e greats churn out a blend of mediocrity to shit for 2 and a half years is just utterly joyless.
There's been a rotten and complacent core to the team since the WTC, starting with losing to Bangladrsh, but really became apparent later that summer when they lost to a mediocre saffa team a weak after thrashing them .
We've wasted about 3 years of our greatest talent-bulge in our history. These guys should have been at their peak the last few years.
The best performances in that time have been when we've gone to India and some horses-for-courses players, and one-off contracted coaches like Herath, have freshened up this stale team.
