Should Ardie play 7?

Because he's fucking dumb
I reckon Ardie playing 8 in the first place was fucking dumb. It only happened because Cane was named captain so was untouchable at 7, and it has fucked our loosie balance for years.
Now Ardie at 8 is untouchable apparently.Hear, hear.

I've heard plenty about how our young props and locks have developed over the last year.
There are very few on here happy with the loosies. It's time for change including some incumbents. -

Question: was there a gap at 8 at the Canes? Or was Ardie moved there for higher honours?
I'm pretty sure when Sam Cane first appeared in the ABs he was touted as being able to play in any of the 3 loose forward positions. -

Now Ardie at 8 is untouchable apparently. It also happened as he was so good off the base of the scrum. He started playing 7 but 8 on attacking scrums then morphed from there. They actually had him at 6 for ages too, with Read 8

I think it was more finding a spot for both Cane and Savea in the same loose forward trio.
-
Be good if they stuck with Delaney at 6 for the Canes but he's blocked by Shields.
Flanders is also better than Shields.
It would be interesting to see Iose developed into a specialist bench player who can cove midfield like Kwagga.
-
@BerniesCorner I don't think you'll get an argument from anyone on that one.
It's the notion that Ardie at seven is part of the solution that I have issues with
-
Well the starting point could be trying Sititi at 8.
Savea hasn't been in top form recently but has the goods to play 6, 7 or 8.
I like a quick jackling 7.
Lakai possibly.
I thought Blackadder was good in SA.
Roigard and Sititi will give us running options
Savea super sub? -
-
Last time he was seen as a 7, journeyman Matt Todd jumped ahead of him.

Delany isn't necessarily blocked by Shields, Shields is only getting older so his minutes will be more limited next year. TK Howden is also another young player that looks to have the goods at 6 but he needs more game time at Super aswell, but then we also have Flanders so there are a number of options there. Howden has definitely been the shining light in a poor Manawatu side so far.

i'd like to see it, every other loosie seems to need to play more than one position, if it lets us see people like sititi (or got forbid sotutu at 8 whilst keeping our lord and saviour savea on the pitch then i dont see why not

We've also seen him dominate as a 7, I remember he played 7 against the Crusaders a couple years ago and probably had the best Super game of his career.
My question re Ardie is - have we already seen the best of him?
The ABs need to start bringing guys like Lakai through now because we don't want another case of Beauden Barrett or Sam Cane where we are giving a senior player a spot in the WC just because of their experience and not so much on form. His form will definitely dip further over the next three years IMO and we can't afford that.

Nothing wrong in trying a few things.
The current trio aren't spinning the wheels, floating the boat ... -

Well we better uncover a really big 6 then.
Why? Lakai is around 110kg which is fine for an international 7, and Sititi is around 114kg which is definitely big enough for an 8.
Oliver Haig and Caleb Delany have the potential to come into the fray at 6 over the next couple years. Both around 1.96m and 115kg.
That would be a big loose forward trio compared to what we have now, way more balanced as well than all these 6.5 / 7.5 players we have atm.
Because I don't think 2 out of 3 AB loosies should be shorter than me, and because Jacobson, Blackadder, Dalton - even Cane - are listed as taller than Lakai and Sititi.

The current trio aren't spinning the wheels, floating the boat ...its actually starting to feel weird that we havent see him even tried....just because all the other loosies move around....it feels like they all have to be versatile because he wont/cant move...which doesnt feel like a good selection policy
