Scrum question, As good as frans is as a prop how much impact does the quality of the lock behind him make?
Are the named bok 4 an 5 good scrumagers or just good locks? Could it be a prop leveller?
Conversely how good a scrummagimg lock is Vaii? The TH lock is a critical element. For example, Itoje is pants on TH side, as shown in 2019 RWC final.
In original team PSDT was named as TH lock, despite being a 5.5 hybrid. Nortje seems a specialist LH lock.
For ABs Scooter is a world class LH lock and Vaa’i is good both sides, probably 7.5/10 on TH.
Sami and Lomax went well last time at Ellis Park against Ox and Bongi, and Codie is probably our best scrummaging hooker.
In summary, the starting scrums should be a good tussle.
Bomb squad will see Steenekamp/Marx/Koch/Eben on.
Williams/Aumua/Newell/Scooter ought to match up well. the main issue is that Darry is very much a LH lock, so query if Scooter would cross to TH when bench on.
Lateral thought that Vaa'i could go to 6 for lineouts but stay TH in scrums with Darry packing at blind side?

@No-Quarter I wouldn't complain. South Africa has named their team twice already.

What I have always loved about these Springboks tests away from home is you find out where you are with your squad going forward. It's a proper thorough audit or stock take.
This is the acid test, both in feral atmosphere and on pitch intensity.
Some lads step up and some are found out.

AB's should take this comfortably. Many inexperienced players in this bok team against mostly the AB team that would have taken the WC final if not for a BS red card. AB's by 15
Aaah, I do so love the ritualistic talking down of Bok chances by Bok fans.
Yet they've spent the last 10 months telling us how total shit we are.
ummmm......that was the AB
fanson here mate. We bok supporters have been loving it.Na, some of the worst fans I've seen. Right up there with the Irish. Wasn't that long ago you got humbled 57-0, beaten by Japan and bitched out a ref into early retirement because you didn't like the way he called the game.
Dude, you need to calm down. All nations have some terrible fans. My comment was a bit tongue in cheek.

We have been shit - by our standards. Of the last 119 years the last 7 or so have been awful.
Should have beaten the Lions in 2017, and that was where the wheels really fell off. Hansen intended to retire at that point and in hindsight it would have been a good call.
Started in Chicago 2016.

Who could have predicted this turn of events?
Tbh, if they were playing silly buggers they would have made this announcement on Friday.
It seems above board give they selection protocols

Buckle yourselves in fellas

Will be interesting to see if post McDonalds departure there are some bold(er) selections going forward.
Barrett to 10
Somehow I don't see Leon as the reason Barrett hasn't been at 10.
Leon was a gigantic fan of Barrett at 10 for the Blues. In 2023 he wouldn't even contemplate trying to move Barrett from 10 despite middling returns

@Lancaster-Park Frans has been around the block a few times. @BartMan use to talk about red wine. The Stormers scrum has always been good. Nortje has been part of a Bulls URC dominant scrum behind Wilco Louw. Boks practice live scrums, Ox possibly the best LH fatty to practise against.
