All Blacks vs Argentina I

@mariner4life Lol always bringing Wellington into the convo. Classic.
I'd personally start Jacobsen at 6 but he's obviously injured. Blackadder is Robertson's favourite player (aside from Havili) so he's likely to get more opportunity. Maybe they have an eye to the physical tests in South Africa where they want to keep Finau on ice. If Finau is going to make a statement he needs to do it over there out of all places to cement his spot going forward.
Our loosies have to step up as a unit for sure.
-
Hahaha holy fuck. Loose forwards are Ethan, Dalton and Ardie. With Sititi off the bench.
So we might again scrape to a win at home. Hardly a confidence inspiring selection.

My hope is Caleb Delany plays 6 for the Canes next year, he could be the perfect guy we are looking for. At 1.97m, 115kg, great in the lineout, not a bone crunching tackler but he's very solid in every everything he does. He was one of the form locks in Super before getting injured but I don't think he's big enough to be a test lock. A move back to 6 could be the perfect move for him, hopefully someone with brains pushes him back there.

Dropping Finau is ridiculous
Finau was our shittest forward in the England series.
Bullfuckingshit.
Blackadder needs to step up and get back to his form before he got injured.
What form?

Given how halfbacks are used, I much prefer Ratima finishing the game than Perenara. Not that TJP isn’t frustrating at times, but I can see what the strategy is there.
I don’t think it’s being conservative having a wet behind the ears halfback entrusted to close out a test match.
-
@mariner4life if you think Caleb Delany is a reserve grade player then you're deluded. Delany was the best 6 in the NPC in 2022 (even better than Finau). Then the fwits selecting the Lions and Canes decided to move him to lock where I don't think he's as effective. If they move him back there he will definitely put his name in the selection pool and it will give us another option. The cupboard is bare at the moment.

For a 6 that's meant to be our enforcer he did f all enforcing. Not surprised at all that he's been dropped.

Even if one of Suafoa/Delany/Haig/other comes through next year at 6 I'm not sure I trust this coaching staff to recognise it and give them a proper crack.

Disappointing team. Blackadder never the answer at 6, Ratima deserved to start, Clarke deserved to start at 11 too... had heard Jordan was starting, bench spot only makes sense on his return. Will be fun to see what he can do off the bench.
Finau hasn't been either tbh. He's done sweet f all so far. Wouldn't mind seeing Sititi get a run at 6 but honestly we don't have many answers.
He was given around 110 minutes. IMO he is so clearly the best potential option that they should have given him these two tests against Argentina.
I'm not 100% convinced he is the answer, but the other options as a long-term six are still another season away at least.

100%, they'll probably pick that Cantab 6 that was wrongfully selected ahead of Delany in the AB XV a couple years ago. Delany completely outplayed him in the final.
The Canes coaches need to move him back there first, whether they do that though is anyone's guess.

A harder shoulder than Ethan and Ardie. Also with the added bonus he's not a dwarf at the lineout.
The coaches need to give him time to develop.
-
@antipodean a hard shoulder that he only uses on first fives. Needs to hit a few more bigger bodies if he wants to get more minutes. That's his job. Ardie isn't the enforcer, Blackadder and Finau are. If they don't step up in the Rugby Championship then I hope the coaches have the brains to look elsewhere.

I also treat with derision people that argue for a 6'2" blindside to complement our 6' #8 and 6'3" openside.
The Test against Fiji had Ethan fluffers wanking about his "link work" at blindside. What happened to loose forwards in this country that our openside had to tackle himself to a standstill so two others could swan about looking for highlight reel opportunities?

Their eyes are locked in on their friends son unfortunately.
I’m hoping Delaney and Haig have massive NPC’s to the point they can’t be ignored. I also still think that Finau’s best rugby is ahead of him so I don’t quite get the logic behind benching him against a physical Argentina pack in test 1 of the RC at home. Surely he would have loved that chance to prove a point.
We could have got a lot of answers about where he’s at over the next 2 tests with him at 6. Perhaps the coaches think the England series gave them those answers? Time will tell…

Perhaps the All Blacks would be in a better place if all three loose forwards did loose forward shit.
But thanks for admitting Ardie is shirking the work.

Man I hope Roigard gets onto the park soon. How good would a Roigard / Ratima one two punch be. Hotham to me is too young still, TJP is leaving so why waste our time, and then Christie... well we don't need to go there.

Yes he seemed slower than before. Great support player but I'm not convinced (yet) he is or will be the right answer for the ABs at 6.

Big chance for ALB to show his wares. First objective is to make sure the midfield is defensively solid. Second objective is to show his distribution skills and try to be the Conrad Smith figure to pair with the straight running JB

Another year and no solution at 6.
It’s test 4 for this new group, so not ready to hang yet on what they are doing at blindside.
In the first 3 seasons of Henry/Hansen/Smith they started 8 different players at blindside.
In that first year (2004) there was chopping and changing too. It went something like:
Gibbes

Collins

The Smith reference was in relation to Ratima playing 80 minutes.
Aaron Smith is the only AB halfback in the past 17-18 years that has played 80 minutes in a test match.
Weepu was the one prior to Smith, in early 2006 against the Argies.

Blackadder is 29 and should be in his prime right now. I struggle to see how he can get any better from here, especially when he is out of action as often as he is. He's going to be 32 at the next World Cup, id hate to know what his body is like by then.
As I posted in another thread a while back, he has been a Crusader since 2018. Since then, he has played on average 7 games a season for them. As we know, for the majority of players(forwards especially) its downhill from 30 years old... I really struggle to see the benefit of giving him a full shot on the 6 jersey moving forward because as history shows, this guy cant stay healthy and father time is going to do him no favours.
I can acknowledge that when he's is healthy and fit he is an absolute weapon but its very few and far between and feels like its been a couple years since he's played like the player he's still hyped up to be.
Expecting some people to disagree with me and thats fair enough, but thats my opinion on the whole Blackadder situation.

Yes. I suspect the coaches love him, the other players do as well but he really didn't play enough to justify early season inclusion IMO.

A strange selection apart from the Crusaders factor. I feel likewise at Hooker
Weird backline though.
The back three looks very ordinary and maybe the MacDonald factor (2 limited coaches selecting midfield and wing/FB) . Glad that Rieko is not starting at center though but why not Proctor to get another start after his last quality start. But see what ALB can do but I see him as a 2nd 5 now

Weakest All Blacks starting XV for a major Test that I can remember for a long time, fortunately the bench is better.
The continued lack of ball carriers is baffling, as is TJP at 9 when there are better younger options.
Disappointed that Proctor and Clarke miss out.
I think it will be another close and nervy one. ABs by 1-3.
-
@sparky yeah I would have started Proctor and Clarke over Telea and ALB. We know what ALB offers, he's never set the house on fire.
I'd rather Proctor get an opportunity at his home ground against tougher opposition than Fiji to show if he can back up what he did in his first test. Too much chopping and changing for me.
