Why does anyone give a shit about this?

    NZ Cricket don't.

Neither of our opening batsmen had played since February. The majority of the others hadn't played since April.

The guys who played (weren't just squaddies) in the IPL have played more recently - but, in India.

But, we didn't need any warm-up games.

At least the team has put in plenty of practice spending time with their families.

    Don Corleone will be pleased!

    So……

Are NZ officially out or is there still that niggly, shitty, clutching at every straw imaginable “mathematical” chance that we’re still a possibility to get through ?

Officially out. The combination of results now required for us to get through probably requires dodgy bookies.

@MN5 Afghanistan has to lose to both PNG and WI and somehow badly enough that we can make up about a -8 NRR.

The flying pigs would have to get to Mars... 🙂

More interesting to me than the BCs batting was weirdly when they showed the table standings, Papua New Guinea was the only team initialised.

    You're welcome.

Happy to miss all of this game although I did check the score occasionally. It started well. 🙂

Many of us said that not selecting Seifert in the squad was a mistake. That's on Stead and Wells.

Mitchell has bowled two overs (both the 19th) so far and conceded 35 runs.

Stead's reason for not playing any warmup games was that the IPL players arrived late, and the Black Caps requested later warm-up games due to the late arrival of players, but were denied by officials. I've no idea if Conway was in India but the likes of him could have done with some games.

    Black Craps indeed.

Have I missed a reason why nearly everyone else got to roll the arm over, except for Ravindra?

He didn’t need the distraction from the massive pressure the fern has put on him to be the next KW

Surely with late arrivals from IPL you still schedule pre-tournament fixtures for the remaining players who haven’t just been playing IPL.
Who apart from Trent & Santner arrived late?

Aussie played warmup games without their IPL players and the coaching staff fielded to make up the numbers

Don't worry after this performance barely any black caps will be in the IPL by the time the next tournament comes along so it won't be a problem. It's all a cunning long-term plan from Stead you see.

Pretty sure they read it as being a seamer's pitch - especially after Phillips and Santner bowled relatively expensive early overs.

So Santner - who you'd usually expect to bowl four overs only bowled two - and they tried not to have him have to bowl his second. And Neesh who you'd hope not to use at all bowled four.

    And Mitch Jr.

The Windies showed that was a bit of a misread.

    India played a warm-up game.

The Jaapies had a three match tour of the Windies in May.

England played a series vs Pakistan in England at the end of May.

We were the dipshits who decided we didn't need proper preparation and reaped the rewards. I thought we were supposed to have taken "learnings" from getting our arses handed to us at the WACA when we didn't bother to play warm up games prior to that big tour.

Just saw Hesson making this point on a chat show - and also throwing in that "everyone knows that practice wickets in the Windies are substandard, so it's no use planning to do your work over there".

Just in case anyone apart from Stead was hoping for a 0.00000000001 chance of us mathematically going through, AFG beat PNG easily as expected

So any batsman apart from my boy Glenn Phillips remotely enhance their reputations ?

Really disappointing that proven performers like KW, Conway and Mitch couldn’t scrape 50 BETWEEN THEM in two games. You’d expect one of them to score big at least once.

Other hit or miss top order batsmen definitely missed.

Some of the bowlers played ok and kept the totals well within reach if the batsmen did their jobs.

Geez these next two games will be a colossal waste of time but might paper over some cracks I suppose.

Is it fair to say, we're the equivalent of Australia in rugby and we've just gone to a World Cup and been knocked out by Wales and Fiji?

    What happens next, Eddie?

Actually, I doubt that it's Stead's job to line up warm up games, so he's probably been dudded more than anyone.

Surely Stead would have heavy influence of whether or not warm up games would be played.

He doesn't just rock up and get an itinerary and go 'yeah sweet'.

If he wanted warm up games we would have warm up games.
