QF - Hurricanes vs Rebels
-
A few question marks hang on the likes of Shields, Delany, Lomax and now Perenara and Love for next week but if all players are available I think the 23 picks itself.
- Numia
- Aumua
- Lomax
- Delany
- Walker-Leawere
- Shields (c)
- Lakai
- Iose
- Perenara
- Cameron
- Naholo
- Barrett
- Proctor
- Moorby
- Love
- O’Reilly
- Rakete-Stones
- Tosi
- Sangster
- Flanders
- Kirifi
- Judd
- Sullivan
Harsh to drop Rayasi and Vijoen after Saturday but I think we’ll go with a 6-2 split on the bench for the playoffs and Judd probably gets the nod because of experience. Sullivan gets the other bench spot because he covers more positions than Rayasi.

Rayasi has hit form. Moorby has just made up the number recently. I would start Rayasi and see if he can continue his great form.
Vijoen offers a lot more than Judd.
I hope the selectors have the courage to start one and have the other in the reserves. Vijoen is also looking at the future. And to see if Rayasi has in fact turned a corner.
-
@Winger Moorby’s been our right winger all year and has performed bloody well, lol you don’t make changes now we are in the playoffs.
Rayasi will take Naholo’s spot if anything but I can’t see it. They’ll stick with the tried and tested that have performed in the big games this year.
Rayasi looks good against weaker teams but when the pressure goes on he’s one of the stupidest players in the comp. You can’t have a player like that in the finals.
-
Dropping Moorby would be madness. He's the exact type of wing you want in playoff footy.
I could see Rayasi getting picked over Naholo however, as you could argue on form he deserves the start.
Like Canes4life said though he's often error prone against the top sides.
I would have Viljeon over Judd, experience be damned. Judd is too pedestrian.
-
@foobaNZ yeah I would pick Vijoen over Judd myself but I think they’ll pick Judd unfortunately.

Lol pedestrian is what moorby has been second half of the session, especially compared to how he started

I disagree, Moorby has been solid. You don’t want two power wingers because it gets too unstructured. I think you guys are getting a little carried away with Rayasi. He’s looked good because he’s pretty much played against weaker defences this year.
Would be moronic to drop Moorby now, he’s performed when it’s mattered this season so I back him to go well in the playoffs. He's earnt the right.

Lol he leads the competition in clean breaks. He's pedestrian aye .

@Machpants that's not what I've been seeing
Plenty of breaks, good kick chase, often first to clear rucks on a break too if he doesn't receive the pass.
There is more to wing play than the fancy highlights reel stuff.

100%, Moorby is the type of winger you want in finals. The flashy shit doesn't win you championships. Rayasi can get more opportunity next year when Moorby is gone.

Moorby started off brilliantly. AB quality, Recent games he's like a different player. In a bad way.
Whereas Rayasi's been the opposite. Maybe Moorby will come right. I hope so if he starts, To find his spark again. As we need players who are firing not just going through the motions
Hopefully the coaches can see what's going on at training and make a decision based on this. And it works out on the field this WE. Maybe his mind is already elsewhere.
-
@Winger what did he do wrong against the Chiefs? You also can't look into Saturday's game against the Landers too much, watching the replay didn't do the wind justice, it was blowing an absolute gale at the Tin.
You guys are making him sound like he's been one of the worst wingers in NZ recently, he's actually the opposite to that if you look at the stats. Yes, he probably hasn't been as good as he was in the first half of the season but he hasn't been bad. Teams are obviously putting more numbers on Moorby now because of the danger he posed at the beginning of the year. The advantage of that is it opens up more space for our other wing e.g. Rayasi who was able to work his magic in a free flowing game. It won't be like that in the playoffs.
-
We're not saying he's the worst we're saying he's been overtaken.
-

You guys obviously haven't learnt from previous years, the flashy stuff doesn't win titles.
Moorby hasn't been overtaken because Rayasi doesn't do the important shit off the ball.
-
Title is the blues then! As they've bok'd their systems and have by far the best defence
-
@Machpants Canes will rip their system apart once we get Lomax back. Their scrum won't hold up against ours IMO if we get Numia, Aumua and Lomax back firing together. If the Canes get parity up front against anyone it's almost curtains because of the way our loosies play and how deadly our backs are. Add home advantage to that and it's going to be bloody tough for anyone to come to Wellington and win. Cudos if they do.
-
Fingers crossed
-
Wonder what sort of crowd we'll get. Would be nice to hit at least 20K plus for a QF and if we get through hopefully sell outs from there.

I think we'll get 20k plus for the Rebels, close to 30k would be amazing. I've already got my tickets.
-
From the post below, it looks like Shields and Lomax are back to work, will be good for them to both get half a game against the Rebels.
-
Regardless of wether Rayasi or Moorby is picked the canes will win this in a canter
-
@Windows97 you'd hope so. The Canes need to find their ruthless edge in the playoffs, if they don't win this by 20+ points I will be surprised. At the end of the day they just need a win to advance so it will be interesting to see how they attack teams, will they take the points when on offer or will they back themselves to go for tries. I just hope we don't go into the our shells and I hope we approach these games like we have every other game this year.

@Canes4life
damn posted this in wrong thread lol. But yea, I agree. Me and my mate who go to every game we can have tickets of course. And have a couple of others joining us on their request this week so I'd expect that'll be the same for others. -

I'm sure there are many like that.

This'll be a flogging.
-
I am sure the Rebels are on the piss already. Those making the Wallabies already know they are in, everyone else is unemployed.
-
@antipodean only 1 game of the quarters looks like it wont be a flogging.

If it were a 6 team finals, you'd just skip the 1v8 and 2v7 that is silly. You'd still have the Brumbies Highlanders and Chiefs Reds.
Chiefs REds looks the game of the round.

Hopefully next year it will be like this with the top two teams taking a week off. If players require mins they could play club rugby e.g. Shields and Lomax.
-
Will they be tempted by resting Lomax one more week ? Tosi has been an excellent backup and they could bring Mafileo on the bench. It's only the Rebels ...
-
@cgrant they could be but it will mean they will go into the semi without having played for a while. I reckon give them a half each and then pull them but I guess we’ll find out later today when they name the team.
-
Hopefully stat Lomax with Tosi coming off the bench. He was a bit of a beast coming off the bench earlier.
-
If Lomax is fit then he needs to play and get some runs on the board as others have said.
Get 40-60 minutes then come off early if game is under control.

The only one where the favourite is 'only' at $1.22 and playign their bogey team.
The comp is broken when you have favouritism in playoffs like this.

With a 6:2 bench it's obvious what the Rebels game-plan is.
