Black Caps v South Africa

We really are a one man team all things considered. Sure O’Rourke and Ravindra have had fantastic moments and look promising but how many other players have started brilliantly only to fade ? ( Sinclair, D Bracewell, Ryder, dare I say Devon Conway etc ) Which ferner suggested Ravindra would break all of KWs records ? Fuck me, this test has brought him back down to earth and then some.
Southee is getting past it, Wags is already there. Jamieson is injury prone.
When KW calls it a day I’m picking a 90s like slump when Paddles retired.

What is of concern is, despite being SA team being roundly decried as the poster child for the death of test cricket
the only difference between the two teams is the class of Williamson, and one Ravindra knock (and even his overall series contribution is all but matched by Bedingham). Latham is our 3rd best record of the tour, scoring an enormous 93 runs @ 23.
Our bowlers have probably bowled better than theirs as well and Phillips innings in the first match was good given the scenario at that point of the innings.

Young's inability to find a single is going to get him out soon

I hope not, a not out would do him the world of good

That session is another points decision for us. I think we need these two to add about another 50 runs before I'll start to feel any kind of comfort, but we're inching ahead of them.
I think 'par' for the next session is about 180/3. If we're much behind that South Africa have edged ahead of us. If we're much beyond that then the session is as close to a knock out as a single session can be.
Nice call, par it is. I would us ahead at the moment and we should win from here but still a fair amount of work to do.

Clearly in front
If anyone disagrees, SA is paying $15 for the win.. make some money

nice..while these two are batting, I think NZ is allowed some confidence.
However if we lose a wicket the remaining batsmen have the ability to score 200 in 100 balls or be all out for 30 runs or less.
As much as Young isnt scoring, Im quite happy for him to occupy the crease right now and not concede his wicket.
-
Wooo. Test hundred number 32.

Wickets have fallen in bunches all through this test, and this pitch is looking pretty awkward. Getting in will be hard work.
We're clearly in front but not decisively. Leading a heavyweight bout 6 rounds to 4 with two rounds to go kind of thing. You should win it from here but can't rest easy yet.
-
King Kane does it again.
-
If we can get to 200 without losing another wicket I think we're decisively ahead. Mental barrier of 200. Less than 10 runs needed per wicket in hand. Still some tough runs to get before then though, and this South African team will keep fighting, for such a young team they have an incredible fight.
-
-
So who's going to man of the match, Williamson or O'Rourke?
I'm leaning towards Williamson as he has taken full responsibility for the chase.
-
Reading the sky is falling on our heads posts is quite amusing
Assuming we see this out NZ will have had 117 test victories. 71 in the last 24 years. We’ve never had it so good. Even the recent awful years were glorious compared to our first half century of test cricket.
If we do go peak Black Craps from here I will ban myself from the Fern.

Joins a couple of handy Australian Steve’s on 32 test tons.
-
Well done Young.
A pretty decent test all things considered and timely support for the GOAT
Well done BCs for creating history vs SA too
-
Do you count that as a dropped catch?

No didn’t really go to hand

Yeah I was joking, Elloit also brought out the same joke.

Ok missed that

So Young has played better than Conway in this game but is not really an opener even though that's where he has played his previous tests. Given Conway seems to be out of form, do you give Young another shot at opening? or Conway keeps his spot?
-
and it's done!
-
So good!
-
interestingly, Kane now has 6 hundreds against SA, but they remain the only test playing nation he has never scored a hundred against in their own backyard.
Jeez we will miss him when he retires, he is sensational
-
-
I honestly never thought that Sir Richard Hadley would ever have competition for the Greatest NZ cricketer ever, but i think it's time for that to be a real chat.
His record is among the best ever. He may not have the bulk runs of guys who play more tests, but his average is right there at the top for guys that have played 90+ tests. Getting to 10,000 runs would i think make it official.
-
O'Rourke got MOTM
-
@mariner4life agreed, he is certainly putting himself right up in contention, if he knocks off a couple of more milestones, it will be hard to ignore
-
Both Southee and Wagner must be very marginal for the Australian series. Two wickets in two tests against a SA third string batting line up is simply not good enough from Southee. Both O’Rourke and Jamison need to be in that team.

They won’t drop the captain after a historic series win. Who would replace him ?
-
Good stuff.
Thanks for coming Jaaps - next time try fielding your B team in a RWC Final, you feckers!
Overall, seven good innings by us - and one poor one that put us under pressure.
Comfortable in the end.
Kane has a better "hundreds per match" ratio than anyone except Bradman and a few flukes like Rodney Redmond and Andy Ganteaume.
-
@MN5 Santner or Ajaz Patel.
Given my scepticism about playing spinners in NZ, though - right now I'm hoping for...
Latham, Young, Williamson, Mitchell, Ravindra, Phillips, Blundell, Henry, Jamieson, Southee, O'Rourke.
Sorry Devon, but you need some runs in the short forms.

7 in the last 12 is just ridiculous. Ridiculous.

Context when you look at how many NZers have scored more than seven - and some of the names who scored seven or less.
-
Man this feels good. I know it's not the prime SA team, but wins are wins. Big bonus for WTC for us - I thought we were out of it after the Bangladesh loss, but we're gasping. A good showing against Aus (not gonna happen) and we'd be right in it.... until we go to India.
Happy Friday night everyone
-
@nzzp it's been how long now since he got a fifty? Unless I missed one if he's getting to fifty, he's getting 100+. Epic stuff.
-
@Paekakboyz Five years or so maybe? I saw something on reddit about it.
-
Last one was in the WTC final where he was 52*.
-
I'll happily take that, after it looked like we were going to FUBAR another series win chance on Day two.
On Hadlee and Williamson comparisons. Given Hadlee was the world test wicket record holder at one stage, and was a lot handier with the bat than Kane is with the ball, I'm still hat tipping that way. Though probably best just to enjoy having seen both of them in most TSF'ers lifetimes.
On Conway, his technical issues are one of the awkward joys of cricket. By the time TSFers and Junior parents are talking about things, there's no way that he is blind to it. If only the fixes were always quick (even I'd have been a decent batter )
