So, what do you lot think about the newbies? I don't get to see much domestic stuff.
BLACKCAPS v Bangladesh ODIs
Tom Latham (c)
Adi Ashok* (games 2 & 3)
Finn Allen
Tom Blundell
Mark Chapman
Josh Clarkson*
Jacob Duffy
Kyle Jamieson
Adam Milne
Henry Nicholls
Will O’Rourke*
Rachin Ravindra
Ish Sodhi (game 1)
Will Young
*Potential ODI debutClarkson is the next generation of hard hitting 5/6/7 finisher in white-ball cricket. E.g. the Neesham replacement. Probably has the reputation of hitting the longest ball in domestics. I think his bowling will be very hittable at the higher level though. Has had injury problems (mostly from his bowling). I’m unsure on him, but has earned the chance and there is a gap coming up in that position.
Ashok would be the most promising. I don’t think a wrist spinner in NZ has had his body of work already by age 21, probably since covered pitches. Should be more consistent than Sochi as has a better action. Although wrist spinners will tend to get channelled down the white-ball (and especially T20 route) so he’ll start to lose opportunities at the longer form the better as he gets better at white-ball.
O’Rourke is ‘quick enough’, ‘tall enough’, ‘accurate enough’. But without being outstanding at any of them. So, will have to see if that adds up to being enough.
I’m just reading this bit and ignoring the negative stuff, sounds like we’ve unearthed the next Glenn McGrath, sweet, that’ll do !

Tim southee has forgotten more about cricket than you fucking idiots have ever known
And he said it was the worst deck he's played on
So maybe shut up
I don't give a shit, it was great to watch, which is all that I have said. I never professed to know more than Tim, not did anyone say it was a good deck, but I do know that I enjoyed viewing it, so maybe you could shut up. It added some variety to the usual stuff we get to see.
@Rapido said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:
Worst pitch to play on and most fun pitch to watch cricket being played on, aren't mutually exclusive.
Glad to know someone else got it.
@Rapido said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:
Although, I'd actually agree with him. Once the inconsistent bounce was added (by day 3, although only day 2 of actual wear and tear) to the crazy spin, it edged into the 'too spicy' side of the scale.
That's true but given that the side that batted last won, it does temper that argument a bit. I guess Phillips just managed to win the lottery (twice).
Thanks for info re newbies.
As @gunner mentioned one upside to all of the "rests" are that we do get to see some of the new guys filter through.

Struggling in tough conditions makes test cricket utterly compelling at times. They can’t all play on roads all the time.

I'm assuming no one here is old to enough to have seen cricket from the uncovered pitches era,
County cricket wickets were uncovered once play started until the early 80's.
I do recall a couple that misbehaved but generally they were just damp wickets not the traditional 'sticky' wicket which needs hot sun after the rain - something not that common in England in the 80's.
England didn't cover test pitches until the late 70's.
I remember reading reports of Underwood bowling on a sticky in the mid 70's. Pakistan were something like 200-3 before it rained overnight and came out the next morning and only scored about 20-30 more in their innings.

My old man spoke fondly of him and how incredible “Deadly Derek” was if it had been raining overnight. Not sure how well he’d go if he played today.
I did like a description of him in his profile “Underwood was like an umbrella, England carried him in case of rain”

Yep. Not sure why it would elicit such a response that people weren't allowed to talk about it, or that they professed to know more than a pro cricketer. Weird. I might get it if it was dangerous, but I didn't hear any complaints about that (I think there were only 24 overs from quicks* anyway).
*includes Tim.
Moving on. Think I saw a bit of O'Rourke in NZ A match v OZ (Ashok too). Looked O.K. Quick google shows bowling stats are promising, but unlikely to rescue us down the order with the bat (not his job anyway).

If he does well you can be sure England will claim credit.

I can handle movement, in fact as a bowler I welcome it
But when the bounce is that inconsistent it's a shit deck, and batting goes from hard to a lottery
As a bat you can handle movement you train for it.
Inconsistent bounce, I 100 % agree it is a lottery go forward or back 50/50 you have made the right decision.
Very poor pitch if you can not trust the bounce its a shit pitch. -

Very poor pitch if you can not trust the bounce its a shit pitch.Well, I'm glad that we all agree on that. Absolutely no one has said that it was a good one in the first place of course.
@Chris said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:
And some of those extras you can tag on to Blundel due to the byes he let through.
But it was a shit pitch with variable bounce, so some of that could be forgiven perhaps.
Still a great match to watch though.

@Chris said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:
Did I say otherwise ,Blundels misses some from the pitch and some were lazy poor technique.
Yeah it was an absorbing test match but I prefer a more even contest for all.
I don't know much about keeping so will take your word for it, Blundel certainly let through more than the Bangle keeper (19 v 6).
It is rarely an even contest over the whole 5 days anyway, and so often errs in favour of the batsmen that this made a nice change I thought. We will see more roads than not again in the near future I'm sure.

I did enjoy it as a game,
Blundel should have stayed down a bit longer stops you getting beaten with the low bounce, that way you can keep everything behind the ball.
If you come up too soon it is too hard to get back down to cover the low bounce. -

If you come up too soon it is too hard to get back down to cover the low bounce.I was an average keeper in my day, but had the pleasure of Tony Blaine as a coach for a short while - this was the main thing he used to drill into me. Just stay the fuck down. You can always get up fast.
That and the imaginary semi-circle that you operate in when keeping to spinners, twisting your body to stay in touch of the stumps at all times.Good fella he was

@Chris said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:
Will O'Rourke is an interesting one he is tall hits the deck hard can get it up around 140ks.
Perfect if he can hold his line and length and that is the big question ,he does drop short sometimes which is a boundary in White ball cricket. Was it him you said was in Brissy rehabbing a back injury? If so sounds like it went well for the young fella. Or was it Shipley? I can't be arsed going back to find your post.

It was Shipley @Crazy-Horse
