Don’t want that every time out, but it’s good to see batsmen struggle occasionally. Also it was pretty consistent throughout so it was fair to both sides.
Speaking for fans mostly. In this day and age a grafting 50 in tough conditions is no where near as appreciated as it should be.
Due to 20/20s and the evolution of ODIs people want to see huge scores. I will admit that there seems to be far more results than in the past on account of quicker scoring rates but the finish to this test was certainly pretty compelling stuff.

Worst pitch to play on and most fun pitch to watch cricket being played on, aren't mutually exclusive.
Although, I'd actually agree with him. Once the inconsistent bounce was added (by day 3, although only day 2 of actual wear and tear) to the crazy spin, it edged into the 'too spicy' side of the scale.

*Potential ODI debutClarkson is the next generation of hard hitting 5/6/7 finisher in white-ball cricket. E.g. the Neesham replacement. Probably has the reputation of hitting the longest ball in domestics. I think his bowling will be very hittable at the higher level though. Has had injury problems (mostly from his bowling). I’m unsure on him, but has earned the chance and there is a gap coming up in that position.
Ashok would be the most promising. I don’t think a wrist spinner in NZ has had his body of work already by age 21, probably since covered pitches. Should be more consistent than Sochi as has a better action. Although wrist spinners will tend to get channelled down the white-ball (and especially T20 route) so he’ll start to lose opportunities at the longer form the better as he gets better at white-ball.
O’Rourke is ‘quick enough’, ‘tall enough’, ‘accurate enough’. But without being outstanding at any of them. So, will have to see if that adds up to being enough.

I'm assuming no one here is old to enough to have seen cricket from the uncovered pitches era, apart from those lucky enough to play club cricket low enough down the scales where you have no covers (or sight-screens).
But that Dhaka pitch is how I imagine an uncovered sticky wicket would have played, back in the day.

I can handle movement, in fact as a bowler I welcome it
But when the bounce is that inconsistent it's a shit deck, and batting goes from hard to a lottery

I feel like all of our ODI and T20 sides outside of world cups are used as rest periods for our best players, then it’s a roll of the dice to see who gets in the team.
I get that we’ve got to keep blooding new guys, and this is clearly how they’re introducing them to international cricket, but it’d be nice to see our top XI, or close to it playing more games.
Then on the flip side they’re so bloody conservative and stubborn with our test team, refusing to to drop an under-performer when we have a couple of good options to replace them with.

I don't give a shit, it was great to watch, which is all that I have said. I never professed to know more than Tim, not did anyone say it was a good deck, but I do know that I enjoyed viewing it, so maybe you could shut up. It added some variety to the usual stuff we get to see.

That's true but given that the side that batted last won, it does temper that argument a bit. I guess Phillips just managed to win the lottery (twice).

Struggling in tough conditions makes test cricket utterly compelling at times. They can’t all play on roads all the time.

County cricket wickets were uncovered once play started until the early 80's.
I do recall a couple that misbehaved but generally they were just damp wickets not the traditional 'sticky' wicket which needs hot sun after the rain - something not that common in England in the 80's.
England didn't cover test pitches until the late 70's.
I remember reading reports of Underwood bowling on a sticky in the mid 70's. Pakistan were something like 200-3 before it rained overnight and came out the next morning and only scored about 20-30 more in their innings.

Yep. Not sure why it would elicit such a response that people weren't allowed to talk about it, or that they professed to know more than a pro cricketer. Weird. I might get it if it was dangerous, but I didn't hear any complaints about that (I think there were only 24 overs from quicks* anyway).
*includes Tim.
Moving on. Think I saw a bit of O'Rourke in NZ A match v OZ (Ashok too). Looked O.K. Quick google shows bowling stats are promising, but unlikely to rescue us down the order with the bat (not his job anyway).
