The Boks are incorporating former players who had leadership roles into their coaching structure, e.g. Vermeulen.
Why are the ABs not doing the same with the likes of Conrad Smith, Whitelock, McCaw and Carter? Surely it would help mentor the new crop and show them what level they need to be at to become the best.
Chiefs and Highlanders have gone that way with Liam Messam Jono Gibbes in part time 'personal development' roles. at Landers you have Ben Smith, Nasi Manu in mentoring roles, Nasi only part time. the Blues also had Tana Umaga last season in a similar role, he was only part time as well I think.

This is the other sad reality we have to face. We outsourced our muscle and our know how.
So much of our "I.P" is off abroad earning a pound note. And good luck to them I suppose.
We would be much better off if they were here putting their shoulder to the wheel though.
To see Tony Brown in the Springbok set up is just horrible. It's a shame it has to be this way.
Even Kenny Lynn was plotting our demise last weekend with the Argies.

Tony brown turned down Razor in 2019 to be part of his AB coaching bid to stay with JJ and Japan.
I’m not entirely sure where he has earned his reputation from his work with Japan and Highlanders (although that just may be ignorance on my part)

Yeah not apportioning blame to anyone. Im not sure of the politics behind the scenes. Coching tickets, loyalties. "We come as a package" etc.
It just feels off when you have a New Zealander in the opposite coaching box scheming back line moves to carve you open.
Its all a bit shit.

No different from other sports (sailing comes to mind). We have to try to keep the best of the best for ourselves. But that isn't easy, because there will always be those who don't want to wait and decide to take opportunities elsewhere. Opportunities that often lead back to playing the ABs

@Bones Not coaches. Mentors. Surely you want your greatest players to pass on their knowledge to those coming through? To help them understand the standards required.
This should be done by the AB leadership group, but that has been gutted in recent years, especially with Smith, Retallick, Whitelock leaving after last WC.
The new leadership group is very green, so until it is less green and can truly lead, bring back into the fold some of those who were integral in setting the standards of the greatest era of AB rugby in the professional era. It can only benefit the new crop of the players to know they have the support and backing of certified legends.

@Bones A skills coach helps you to perfect a specific technique or skill, e.g. contact skills or kicking technique, whereas a mentor allows you to talk through game situations and how better to handle those experiences.
I would agree with you that there are maybe too many skills coaches involved and not enough mentors.

I wonder were our golden generation so obsessed and so focused in their careers that post 2015 they couldn’t be arsed seeing a Rugby ball again.
Carter, McCaw, Conrad et al.
Maybe they completely burned themselves out.
McCaw looked relieved to be walking away from the game. There was no hint of a bank account padding sojourn to Japan or France with him.
