Patty T is an interesting one, another that hasn't really kicked on at international level, 31 with +40 tests and not a nailed on starter is small worry

Who is the next TH? Ofa? So Ofa covers LH, so effectively Tosi beats out XN?

It’s probably nothing to read into, but while I was watching club footy on the weekend, Tamaiti Williams came on and played tight head.

Again probably nothing as Newell is the Crusaders tighthead, thought I’d add that to the discussion for what it’s worth.

Do Robertson, Ryan and co. have a race problem?

Selection after selection after selection, they have overlooked a brown-skinned player for the paler alternative. A really grim start to the supposed new era.

    This crosses a line.

Be pissed off about selection, but throwing the race card out is shockingly poor form snd has no substance whatsoever.

    Racist Razor ?

Has a great ring to it and you don’t get more Anglo names than Aumua, Tosi, Tuingafasi, Finau, Savea, Sititi, Papali’i, Vai’i, Tuipulotu etc. I haven’t even got to the backs yet.

I think there’ll be more Hip Hop on the team bus than Heavy Metal somehow.

Yes he's probably just a stop-gap for this year, maybe help the new younger locks get their feet. I am surprised he lasted the season and even more surprised he came back for the final.

Just to throw my two cents in on Riccitelli, what is the point in picking a 29 year old journeyman to be your number three hooker?

because if he comes on at the back end of a test match and stuffs up the linout throwing that's a major headache. Core role. Same reason Christie gets so much shit.

He may yet be an AB captain then get publicly pillared, go into the wilderness for a bit, change his throwing and then get a recall to the ABs and perform brilliantly.

We’re talking about Anton Oliver right?

I read Sotutu was not selected for the NZ XV last year?
Perhaps those issues (and there must have been major ones with either his playing style or attitude) still linger.

    Welcome to the Fern newbie.

Good to have you back bro.

For me Patty’s best AB footy was as an impact player off the bench. Him and Ofa Tu’ungafasi bringing some go forward late in the game.

This thread is really getting over the top some people need to go and grab their toys and jump back in their cots.
If anyone is lacking maturity it is the people posting the immature bleating posts.

Im quite happy with the Canes selections. Love and Lakai's time will come

But the fact is Robertson blew it. He had so much good will but a good portion has gone now. And he looks a little small minded and insular

He now must win. Then all will be forgiven

He has blown it in your mind he hasn't even played a test yet that is over the top.

if they can be forgiven....then they havent blown it have they....if they win then they were right all along

There can be more than one way to be right as well. You are right about winning, it is the ultimate peacemaker

A journo looks at the stats and attempts to figure out the Sotutu omission

    Jared Wright  /  Jul 1, 2024  /  New Zealand

All Blacks: The telling stats that provide clarity to Hoskins Sotutu's snub

All Blacks: The telling stats that provide clarity to Hoskins Sotutu's snub

Blues star Hoskins Sotutu was a major omission from Scott Robertson's first All Blacks squad of the year after a brilliant Super Rugby Pacific season.

EDIT: and ignore the click bait headline (headline editors are fluffybunnies) it is a bit more thoughtful than SOTUTU SHIT AT THIS ZOMFG

Lies, damn lies and statistics. Let's delve a little deeper into them.

    M/C Rank Name Start?
    26.0 1 Sititi Bench
    12.8 2 Sotutu Start
    12.0 3 Sotutu Start
    8.5 4 Sotutu Bench
    7.8 5 Sititi Start
    7.4 6 Sotutu Start
    7.0 7 Sititi Bench
    5.6 8 Sotutu Start
    5.3 9 Sititi Bench
    4.8 10 Sotutu Start
    4.2 11 Sotutu Start
    3.9 12 Sotutu Start
    3.4 13 Sititi Start
    3.2 14 Sotutu Start
    3.2 15 Sititi Start
    3.2 15 Sititi Start
    2.9 17 Sotutu Start
    2.8 18 Sotutu Start
    2.7 19 Sotutu Start
    2.4 20 Sititi Start
    2.3 21 Sititi Start
    1.9 22 Sotutu Start
    1.3 23 Sititi Start
    1.0 24 Sititi Bench

That suggests an outlier from the bench pumps up the carries metric.

Perhaps another way to look at it is rank their individual efforts and contrast them:

    M/C Name M/C Name Compared
    26.0 Sititi 12.8 Sotutu Sititi
    7.8 Sititi 12.0 Sotutu Sotutu
    7.0 Sititi 8.5 Sotutu Sotutu
    5.3 Sititi 7.4 Sotutu Sotutu
    3.4 Sititi 5.6 Sotutu Sotutu
    3.2 Sititi 4.8 Sotutu Sotutu
    3.2 Sititi 4.2 Sotutu Sotutu
    2.4 Sititi 3.9 Sotutu Sotutu
    2.3 Sititi 3.2 Sotutu Sotutu
    1.3 Sititi 2.9 Sotutu Sotutu
    1.0 Sititi 2.8 Sotutu Sotutu
    2.7 Sotutu
    1.9 Sotutu

It's correct to point out Sotutu is penalised more, but as a coach you have to ask if that's decision making or technique etc. And then ask yourself if someone appears coachable. Why are they giving out penalties - are they brain snaps or contests where the ref makes a judgement call?

IMO they've made a grave error not selecting Sotutu and Ioane, because they're doing the work on both sides of the ball that permit their team to dominate other forward packs.

Yes I read that article and there are plenty of caveats plus I really think the way Sotutu keeps the ball alive for team members is under-rated. Arguably, as well, the whole Blues pack works well so that may lower some of Sotutu's individual numbers.

I do wonder why an injury magnet like Havili is a cover for injury.

I would like to see Blackadder and Sititi both used as the impact bench loosie. I reckon that is their best spot. Give them 30 minutes to come on and go berserk.

Finau strikes me as the best 6 option with either Papalii or Jacobson at 7.

I hope we don't see Blackadder 6 and Jacobson bench for example as I don't think that suits either player.

I don’t think Blackadder will start at blindside against England.

Scooter has played full games for the ABs over the past year or so (when he hasn’t been carded) and given his endurance background/ training plus being captain that is likely to continue. I wonder if they see Vaa’i as an 80 minute guy? My thinking is could they start with Scooter and Vaa’i, bring Patty T off the bench (to replace Finau) in the second half and one of them move to 6 and we also bring Blackadder on to replace Papali’i/Jacobsen at 7.

Well if he is an injury magnet, hopefully he will attract the injury players that are actually a real asset?

I have changed my mind on Love, his youth and little prep time and possibly being not at 100% suggests to me it may be better not to not select him for the first test.

its an emotional support deal, he sits with injured people as he knows what theyve been through

Plays multiple positions maybe not sure.
He didn't make the full squad so they picked Proctor which was the right call.

@MajorRage Ardie overlooked for the captaincy, albeit for a very good candidate in Scott Barrett

Akira Ioane, nowhere to be seen, although he's signed to go to Japan.

Hoskins Sotutu not included, but given some encouraging comments by the Head Coach.

We might not like it, but questions will be asked if there's a pattern here?

To tell you the truth, I've been laughing at this all day with the headline 'is razor a racist' 😂

I am hoping that the loss of our great locking combo is going to put an end to Scott Barrett playing blindside. I feel the same way, but even more so about Vaai.
But then I also hoped we'd select Ardie at 7 so that we weren't forced to pick a major lineout target at 6. I think it means we're stuck with Finau at 6 and the plan has to change significantly if he's out, as he's a pretty different player to Blackadder or Jacobsen.
