Who will be the new Crusaders head coach next year? 
 
Plenty of candidates have already been named, but nobody seems to have publicly put his hand up yet. Until now. 
 
Craig Philpott, current Hawke's Bay Magpies head coach, is interested.

 Hawke's Bay coach Craig Philpott will apply for the Crusaders coaching job, while Taranaki's Colin Cooper remains undecided. 
 Philpott, an ex-lock who represented Canterbury between 1987-92 and has coached Hawke's Bay since 2012, will be among a number of ex-Crusaders and Canterbury reps who want to replace Todd Blackadder at the end of the Super Rugby season. 
 Cooper, meanwhile, said he was going to bide his time before making a call: "I am not sure," he said. 
 "I just have to make a decision about whether I want to go back to Super Rugby." 
 Cooper assisted Robbie Deans when the Crusaders swept through the 2002 season unbeaten, and was Hurricanes head coach between 2003 and 2010. He has coached Taranaki for the last five seasons and is also the NZ Maori coach. 
 Last week the Crusaders board, in conjunction with NZ Rugby, invited applicants to forward their CVs before May 11. 
 Philpott's time at Hawke's Bay has coincided with the Magpies mounting successful Ranfurly Shield raids and also gaining promotion to the NPC premiership following their 26-25 win over Wellington in the championship final last year. 
 "One of the reasons I left Canterbury was to increase my skills as a head coach and always, I guess, with a view to one day come home and maybe be involved with the Crusaders," Philpott said. 
 "It is certainly something I have aspired to." 
 A former Canterbury colts coach, Philpott previously played in Japan for four years. He accepts the competition for the Crusaders job will be fierce and current assistants Tabai Matson and Dave Hewett, along with Canterbury head coach Scott Robertson, are among those who are expected to consider sending their resumes to NZ Rugby. 
 Philpott worked under former Canterbury coach Rob Penney when the team won their fourth consecutive title in 2011, providing input in areas of leadership and the lineouts, and last year worked as an assistant with the New Zealand Barbarians team when they beat the New Zealand Maori 34-17 at Eden Park. 
 He will also assist Robertson with the New Zealand under-20 team this season, replacing Tana Umaga who is now in charge of the Blues. 
 Working as an assistant at the Crusaders also appealed, said Philpott. 
 "The next step for me is in Super Rugby, and whether that is as head coach or assistant coach - I am relatively relaxed in that regard. Most of my experience has been as a head coach, but I am also really enjoying my assistant role at the New Zealand under-20s this year. That has given me a bit more of an opportunity to get my head around that role, to concentrate on the micro rather than the big picture." 
 Philpott had not discussed with Robertson, or anyone else for that matter, about the possibility of forming a partnership for 2017. 
 "There is a big queue of good coaches around the country, and particularly in Christchurch - I am sure it will be a very competitive environment," Philpott stated. "I am well aware of all the guys that are down there like Tabai, Dave Hewett and Razor [Robertson] ... We will just see who puts their hand up. Then it will be up to the powers that be to see how they can make it work, and who they can fit together in the same puzzle."

I personally think he's a lightweight for this job, but I've never been a fan of his as Magpies coach. For the Crusaders, I hope he won't be their new head coach; for the Magpies, it would be a good opportunity to look for a better head coach.

I agree. At least Robertson, if he is going to be the new head coach, has the opportunity to work with him as an assistant during the JWC. Then he'll get an idea of whether he'd like to have him as an assistant at the Crusaders, or not.

I don't think they ever wanted to go outside the "family" did they? Not saying Robertson is the one but given how they've gone this year I'd expect they want to leverage the same internal processes and culture rather than assimilate a new outsider. It's not like they're back to the drawing board ala the Blues

 Robertson, who played 23 tests and was a key member of the Crusaders side that grew into a juggernaut in the late 1990s, believes he has gathered enough intelligence as a coach to be a success at Super Rugby level. 
 "Yes, I would love to be involved," Robertson said. "I have been patient, for a long time, for an opportunity to come up. Having been involved with Canterbury for around eight years and the NZ under-20 team for three (two as an assistant), I think the timing for me and my family is right. I am a red and black man and it would be something that would be very dear to me." 
 Working as an assistant coach was something he would also consider. "Whatever the capacity - I am open to that. There are a lot of good men around with a lot of experience that I am happy to work with." 
 Although he had previously worked under Rob Penney, who won four consecutive titles between 2008-11 and is now coaching in Japan, Robertson hadn't asked his old mentor to put in a joint bid to work at the Crusaders.

Unfortunately that horse has bolted, Keane wasn't very complementary of the crusaders set up when he signed for the Chiefs.

Robertson or Matson. Both have won provincial titles with Canterbury. Robertson has a successful Junior World Cup on his resume, whilst Matson has experience as a SR Assistant Coach. I suspect it will be Robertson, and mainly because after an extended period with no titles the Crusaders board may want some new blood and new ideas. In saying that, Matson would do a great job if given the chance.

I'd prefer Robertson too. In saying that Matson's title winning season with Canterbury was very impressive. From memory we played a really great style of Rugby and he was also rebuilding at the same time. However I think we need some new blood at the Crusaders and a line needs to be drawn on the Blackadder era.

Penney said he was not in the loop for the job and was not in a position to consider himself for the post.
Asked if he was chasing the Crusaders head coaching position, given Todd Blackadder is moving on at the end of the season, he said that was also unlikely.
He declined further comment.

I really like Robertsons passion. Have heard him speak on the radio a few times and he mentions things like pride in the jersey quite a lot.
 
I think we are seeing his influence on the team this year.

He's also followed a traditional path to get there, Schoolboy coaching followed by a lengthy stint in Club footy as coach of Sumner (he really excelled here, turning a struggling club into a force), then NPC. So has paid his dues.
 
 
 
But agree he probably isn't the sharpest guy around.
 
 
Dave Hewitt is a really smart guy and I hope he stays on as an assistant.
