I'm OK with that. It looked bad at first but the player dipped suddenly. Not consistently refereed like that.

That's a sloppy as fuck clean out, reckless and dangerous

I’ve literally no idea what the ref is going to give anymore. That could have been red, in the end not even a penalty. Weird

    My feelings the same

    Commiserafions @MiketheSnow @GibbonRib

Argie looked gone after 25 minutes or so. Impressive to fight their way back.

@Bones It wasn’t really a breakdown yet though. Tina player wasn’t on the deck, he caused the drop in height late doors when he got off the train tracks. I was very surprised to see the outcome though.

If it wasn't a breakdown, what was he doing cleaning out?

@Bones I think it was reffed as a tackle as Dickson said that both players were dropping and the Argentinian player had clearly attempted to go low. The problem was there was clear dead contact so that puts the minimum sanction as a yellow card I believe.

I suspect it is a repeat of the 2019 knockout games where there is any slight mitigation, they avoid carding players but I suspect that I will be proved wrong before the end of the weekend.

My only hope is both Dickson and Jonker will be heading home tomorrow too so that no other team has to cop their ineptitude

Whether it was a card or not (I think it was for the same reasons as @bones), why was it not a penalty?

    Has this changed:

"If head contact is accidental - for example, if a ball-carrier slips into a tackle - a penalty will be awarded."

https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/38322884#:~:text=Players making contact with an opponent's head in,a tackle - a penalty will be awarded.

It seems that it has changed:

    https://resources.world.rugby/worldrugby/document/2021/03/10/e597c9c8-e852-4e19-875f-18e02e7f7e24/Head_Contact_Process_EN_v1.pdf

Head contact can be play on, it has just never been applied like that until today (that i have noticed).

@Bones Looks like Wayne Barnes settled this one for us a couple hours later. Richie Mo would have been red all day in the Premiership.

Called it! head contact reffed differently in the knockouts. Total bull shit. Am sure Gatland will have a few things to say about that.

Commentators had it right: their numbers fell apart with their game plan

I broke for lunch, now up to the tackle, clear fucking yellow (up until now). But still penalty according too the laws, minimum. No try Argentina later.

Funny I thought it was a good call by the ref team. Though haven't watched multiple replays. Looked the Argie cleared the Welsh player well (right in the stomach) and the other Welsh player fell into his arm. Looked like a total rugby incident.

Yes. But it hasn't been called that way for years. Correct call, but not been called that way for a long time. It's inconsistent, that's the problem

A few rambling initial thoughts, after not much sleep, and before rewatching any of it... (I reserve my right to contradict myself and change my mind without notice)

Argentina were deserving winners. But they were pretty limited, and didn't do much - just were better than Wales. We were pretty poor all game. Hugely disappointing, after we'd put in some really solid performances in the pool - but this kind of level is where we've been for a while, so given how we looked 6/12 months ago it's no shock.

Wales' best period was the first 20, where we managed the game well. But so many mistakes - handling errors mainly - meant that we only scored 10. Felt like we missed the chance to score more in that period (although to be fair so did RG). After that, we couldn't get any control for pretty much the rest of the game. Our kicking, which had been really smart and well executed against Australia, was pretty poor. Handling errors, crap line outs etc. So many of our senior players had really poor games.

Honestly can't think of much to say about Argentina. They played well enough, and smart enough, to get past Wales, but that was a low bar today.

Game was enjoyable enough, but quality was so far below the other match - the semi will be a formality if both teams play like they did today.

Still dumbfounded about the decision that it wasn't even a penalty for the hit on Tompkins. I need to watch it again before I whinge too much, but my impression at the time was that it was reckless - although Tompkins was falling at the time, so certainly some mitigation. I get what MtS says, it could have changed the outcome. But that's true of many reffing decisions during a game. If it had been a high quality, high intensity, knife-edge match then I might be furious about it. But there are so many reasons we lost that were within our control that it doesn't seem right to just focus on one that wasn't.

Hungus is some one who holds the ball and doesn't pass, he blew a try by not passing to unmarked player, pretty game defining moment.

Good game of footy that. Wales completely fell apart and Argentina took full toll. Bit of niggle always helps a game in my eyes

Absolutely loved the reffing of the head contact. Yes head contact but no foul play. Check the player for concussion. Perfect

Pity the next won't get reffed like that.
