I split this into a new thread.

I think we'll do what we did for the T20 world cup.. match threads for NZ and everything else in a shared thread

    Other matches thread:
    https://www.forum.thesilverfern.com/topic/6260/2023-cricket-world-cup-other-matches

It allows the conversation about NZ games to last for a few days without getting drowned out by the next game

I was just checking how many warm up games were left and found we were kicking it off. It’s not like England are a low key team.. you’re right, build up is nothing

Anyway apparently Kane still not ready, Southee injured, so team line up will be interesting

Very mixed feelings. One one hand... for some dangerous reason I'm also quietly optimistic about our chances if Ish and Santner fire. On the other... hearing Black Caps v England in a CWC game, I've also realised that even a pandemic and multiple other events since still haven't buried the scars of Lords 2019...

    Sure enough, on Cricinfo:

Shane Jurgensen, New Zealand assistant coach; former fast bowler: Thought I'd get over it, but you don't. It brings it all up once again and it's bubbling away.

Mentioned that Glenn Philips has been bowling in the warmups.

Ffs who has Laura McGoldrick shagged to be the front person for three different sports? SSport really are in the shitter. She did the league, she’s hosting the build up for the RWC and now she’s the front women for the CWC. Talk about recycling the same old dross.

No Ish, but it must be a while since we had eight genuine bowling options in a game.

1 Devon Conway, 2 Will Young, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (capt/wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mark Chapman, 8 James Neesham, 9 Mitchell Santner, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Trent Boult

Poor first over from Boult. Henry right on the money first ball by comparison... ... height might save this DRS one for England. And does.

Indian cricket fans don’t really like watching cricket. They like supporting their heroes. The crowds at this World Cup will likely be a joke outside of India games.

The organisation has been a scandal, England are in a different place for every game and the schedule was confirmed so late that I know a lot of people who couldn’t make the trip work. The BCCI don’t care about any other teams in the world, and they don’t care about their role as guardians of the game that they have ended up with simply because of how much money they generate.

Test cricket is pretty much dead everywhere except England. Only three teams really get regular opportunity to play it, the same three who cream off most of the money.

50 over international cricket is almost dead, certainly is between world cups. 20:20 is the currency of the modern game and even then India only really care about the IPL and won’t release players to play in other tournaments.

Fucking depressed about the state of cricket and rugby to be honest

But hey, there’s a game on. And we’ve started ok. If Bairstow can stay in and get a few however scratchy, then we’re set for a real chance in this tournament

Whilst this is a bit over the top there are a few pretty interesting points.

Test Cricket is the ultimate. If it genuinely stops being played I will be a sad man.
