toured NZ in the '70's (?) beating a NZ 2nd XV, I think.
I remember them touring NZ in the early 90's too
I found the results from the tours:

First ever live game of rugby I went to was Northland 3 v Romania 0 at Okara Park.
And I recall the 1981 ABs test that was awfully close.
Did think they'd be better and have plenty of pros playing in France.

Romania are only at the World Cup because Spain got kicked out due to eligibility issues with their players. Romania weren't exactly strong during qualifying.

Yeah, but still thought they'd be better.
And I thought that of a lot of Tier 2 teams who have been a bit disappointing. Most of them have plenty of pros in their ranks. So have been surprised at some of the scorelines.
Mind you ... Italy ...

I will be seriously pissed if Scotland do beat Ireland and we end up playing SA in the QF
Can Scotland top the group if they beat Ireland?
Yep, but they’ll need to finish with more points than SA (table points, not point differential)

In theory yes, but SA will top the pool if it beats Tonga with a BP and a PD larger than 35 and Ireland lose to Scotland.
I think the only way Scotland finish top of the pool is if SA fail to secure a BP vs Tonga and Scotland beat Ireland with a BP.
For Scotland, they need to win and deny Ireland a BP or win and score 4 tries and keep Ireland to 1 BP. In theory Scotland could beat Ireland but if Ireland get 2 BP they go through.

Didn’t Romania used to be ok ?
Decades ago they were really good. Better than Italy and capable of beating France and Wales. Toured NZ in the '70's (?) beating a NZ 2nd XV, I think.
A lot of their players and structure came from the armed forces and the collapse of communism had a huge impact when state funding disappeared.
This.
They were effectively state funded professionals in an amateur era. They were at the top of the second tier in Europe and beat France and Ireland from memory. Not sure if they knocked over Wales once?
Edit: They drew with Ireland, they beat France 7 times!

Twice

Yeah was just looking it up. They beat a strong Welsh side in Cardiff in 1988.

Friend of mine played 14 for the Met Police in the '80's. He said he was effectively a professional player during the rugby season as were many of the Armed Forces teams.

Yeah it’s easy to forget how strong some of the police sides were. Devon & Cornwall jousted with Exeter, Plymouth, Redruth etc and South Wales Police were in the top tier in Wales. I played a few times v Exeter Police. Always a punch up and always they started it. Good guys in the clubhouse afterwards though.

When I was at Huddersfield Polytechnic between 1989-1993 our opening fixture for the season was always against West Yorkshire Police
We used to get beaten up in the first half, then used to run them ragged in the second
One of the best beige buffets you'll see after the match and free beer until we wanted it
All on a Wednesday afternoon
Superb
Added bonus
Coppers used to come in to the Poly to ask the boys to appear in line ups at Huddersfield nick
£10 cash in hand and food & drink laid on
At that time my monthly rent was £25
