Joseph Parker - Young man going places.
-
he's probably landed more but Ruiz has thrown heaps
-
Maybe just to Ruiz? Parker didn't push the fight but his accuracy was probably better.
-
Commentary still leaning to Parker
-
and a good call that Joshua or Fury won't be worried about these two
-
Joe wins!! Majority decision!!
I think he knows how lucky he was!
-
i thought Ruiz had done enough through the early rounds , we saw a similar thing a couple of weeks back with the Andre Ward fight ,
but it was close thats for sure

Yep. One of them had to show a lot more I think, to be considered a genuine threat to Fury or Joshua. Wonder if Parker will stay with Barry. Kinda think Barry has taken him as far as he can.
-
First NZ heavyweight champ (unless you count Bob Fitzsimmons). Congrats where it's due.
Dunno if Parker is one of the top 3 or 5 in the world (personally I think Luis Ortiz is the best by far) but he has got one of the main belts now.
-
I know nothing about boxing but that was close.
Joe hit him with some big ones but Ruiz just took them, sucked them up and threw some back.
Thought Ruiz looked slightly better - kept pushing Joe back - but as I said I know nothing about boxing.
Was hoping the comms were right that Joe had slightly the better of it but gut feel was sooo close and any of 3 results would nit gave surprised.
-
Don't think Ruiz camp thought much of Parker and his supposed power punching. Thats the logical reason for Ruiz to keep coming foward. Seemed on the money.
Felt like Parker was trying to sell the fight to Joshua, Klitschko, Haye and Wilder. He wasn't interested in the Lennox Lewis school of thought when boxing a smaller opponent. He used the Jab only when he remembered he could.
He's made life hard for himself. Ortiz is licking his chops somewhere. But still fucken proud of Parker regardless.

I don't know much about the ins and outs of boxing so can't comment hugely on the result, but Parker was just crowned a world champion, yet David Higgins chooses to use his 20 seconds on the microphone in the ring to bag illegal streaming and accuse them of not helping Parker get there?
Seriously? I bet Lonergan and Higgins take home huge pay packets on the back of someone else getting their head smashed in. I'd imagine if anything, illegal streaming stops them putting an extra wing on their house or upgrading to the newest BMW...

Can any aficionados tell me, is WBO more or less prestigious than WBC, IBF etc??

Less I believe.
What it will do though is attract match ups for unification -

Seems to be a major topic in NZ once this fight was announced by sports media who arent that clued up in boxing ,
Probably less so, but not as much in it as people want to talk about , they are all belts ,
Once Boxers get a name for themselves these days , they pretty much fight for as much money as they can , belts almost come along as a bonus ,but its really the money they are chasing, fighters think nothing of vacating a belt if they see a better money deal somewhere else,
its almost become a bit like golf or tennis where they fight for prizemoney and the various tournaments are like the various belts

The thing that has struck me once Parker has stepped up and fought guys with a bit more of a chin like Ruiz and Takam ,
He hasnt looked like knocking them out , his boxing skills arent nothing to write home about , and maybe his power isnt what we thought it was either ?
Parker is a champ now and good on him , but there are a few guys out there you would not want him fighting yet ,

Without officially scoring it round by round , I thought Ruiz was in front , despite what the colonel was saying , he has always been one eyed to his favourites
Just thought Ruiz took the first 4 rounds ( maybe Im wrong ) but if he did ,
Did Joe do enough in the next 8 to bring the scoring back in his favor, ? you can only think the judges thought he won the majority of those last 8 rounds IF Ruiz won the first 4 , the next 8 were close but they mustve scored them round by round marginally to joe
Wasnt robbery by any means , nothing like that, but Ruiz is entitled to feel unlucky , would not surprise me if there is a rematch on the cards

Most reports were that Ruiz did win the first four. One judge had JP winning 4 of the next 8 two judges had him winning 5 of the next 8 ( that's if I understand it correctly)
Only a really decisive round gets you more than a one point win for that round, like you've been really beaten up.
Obviously home advantage is a big thing so kudos to Duco for managing to make that happen. They might cop some shit at times but you cannot deny that they have achieved a pretty impressive campaign to achieve a world belt.
Parker will find he has to cop the outsider. Status if he ends up fighting overseas.
Congrats to Joseph are deserved though. Well done that man. A lot of doubters out there looking for excuses to downplay what he has achieved -
Great achievement by Joe. Ruiz was always going to have to do a lot more than Joe to win it down here and almost did enough.
Still not convinced at all on Joes power. Other fighters above him won't be shaking in their boots based on his recent performances
-
close fight eh. i had parker winning, but i'm no expert, and not by much. thought he landed a few more scoring punches overall, after losing the first few rounds.
early on he looked hesistant, maybe nervous, and ruiz kept backing him up nicely while parker was hitting nothing but gloves. as ruiz slowed a touch, parker was able to slide out of his way a bit more, and hit him with a few more jabs. didn't throw enough though.
both have pretty quick hands for big boys, but most of the shots landed weren't from really strong positions.
awesome to get the belt. well done joseph.
