Dagg to start v Jaguares
-

I guess so much is made of people saying things properly in NZ, actually making an attempt being sufficient to others is refreshing...?

Anywhoo, great to see Dagg back, been a long spell for him, see how he responds to it.
-

I'm in the 'it sounds forced' camp.

Spanish is fine if you are a speaker of the language and can actually do the correct sounds, much like many other languages.

Does Dan Carter currently live in Pariss or Paree? Does anyone outside of the Netherlands pronounce Van Gogh's name properly.

Using the anglicised version is often much better than some mangled attempt at a language that doesn't come naturally.

I was talking to an Argie fan while in the US way before I had heard the Hwa-gar-rays pronunciation and we talked about the entry into the comp of the Jaguars. We both knew what we were talking about and he didn't try and correct me.
-

Just like English.

The Mrs is the same as the Argentinian bloke you mention.

She isn't going to correct anyone for saying Jaguars, and doesn't really care if you do.

But still appreciates that some are making an effort.... it's the UAR part that generally trips the commentators up, as we don't have that sound in our vocab (so they pronounce it with a W)

She has quite a few friends who have names we also have in English but are pronounced quite differently (Jesus, Richard, Martin, Christian etc)... I think I'd come across as a bit of a dick if I didn't make an effort to pronounce these properly when talking with them.

Also, it was bloody great the other week when they played the Stormers and sky fucked up the feed. we had Spanish commentary for the first half. Great for me anyway as I'm trying to learn a bit of Spanish. I emailed them after the game about the chances of getting alternative commentary for these games.
-

I think they receive a lot of emails requesting a button for the Justin Marshall on mute commentary.
-

shame radio and TV are not in sync....

So are you ok with Paul Henare being called "Paul Henry" then?

Personally I'd even take a butchering of a name over not even bothering to try.
-

I'm betting Dan Carter doesn't admire the Diamonds and Pearls on the "Av Dez Champs e lee sees" either though. I'm picking he would try and pronounce that correctly.

No. I think you are missing the point.

We are talking about pronouncing a foreign word while using our language.

I'm more than happy if there was an accepted common NZ pronunciation of the team as eg Hwa-gar-rays and everyone used it. Instead we have various commentators and announcers mangling up the word while trying to sound like they speak a language that they don't.

Maori is an official language in our country and personally I see that genuine attempts at not saying words incorrectly is the way to go.

My point is that we don't fall over ourselves with saying SA names, French team names etc etc so it sounds false to do so with the Argies.
-
When I was in the Netherlands, any news there regarding NZ, it was written/spoken in Dutch. Same as when watching the Frogs/All Blacks game over there when we pumped them, the French used French language in describing us... I didn't have a problem with it, as it was their country, they didn't have to try not to offend anyone.

So very similar circumstances with the Jaguares, I don't see the problem with accepting that our commentators are collectively pretty shit at pronouncing Jaguares properly, so sticking to the English version is the better option IMO. Especially as we're an English speaking country... -

The French call us the All Blacks tho don't they? not les Tout noir (my french is pretty shit so forgive me if lost in translation)
-

well no, don't most teams try NOT to call us the All Blacks, cos of, you know, Aura!
-

I think it sounds a bit wank. Sort of like people going on holiday to Barkalowna or Mehico.

It's BATHlona.
-

I thought it was two different teams that were touring.

Last couple of weeks it's been the Jaguars disguised as the Haguarez. This week it's the the Pumas in disguise.

Looks like the feckers have targeted us on the back of our travel schedule and have rolled out some well-rested heavy artillery.

Lets hope they're lacking in cohesion and matchplay.
-

yeah I'm a bit worried about this game Chris. We've travlled a lot and struggle with teams that play well from broken play (ie the Chiefs)

The Jaguares are pretty good at this type of rugby. Want to see us play with control and look for field postion.
-

Great to have Dagg back. We've missed a genuine fullback this whole season. Macilai is a better midfielder and Volavola is really a 10.

I think this has banana skin written all over it and I'm a little uneasy of not having Whitelock in the 23 when it's going to be a very physical match. FABSB is playing very well and Romano's body height has been on the improve.

I'll be looking for a couple of things in this game, Read to fire up and a more direct attack from Richie/Crotty/Fonotia
-
