Hurricanes 2024

@ruggabee Holland should never have been the head coach. He only got the gig because Plumtree pulled out right before the season kicked off so they didn’t have time to go through the correct recruitment process. So glad he’s gone, the Canes can now reach their potential without a coach hamstringing them with stupid selections.

And Avan Lee was going to give Holland another 2 year contract extension if Razor hadn't taken him off your hands last year, Hurricanes fans must be feeling so thankful towards Razor at the moment.

Danny and I go back 40 years!
We have had beers in NZ, London, Bologna, Italy
After all that, He better bloody like me! 😂

I was very happy as soon as Razor wanted Holland. Then I almost exploded with happiness when Gibbes announced he was leaving too.
then Blackwell left ...
edit Blackwell's leaving is weird. Pleased he's gone but he just disappeared.

@Canes4life that whole saga with Boyd supposedly not wanting to leave but Plumtree getting the job was bizarre. Glad we're past that and the Holland years we had to endure afterwards.
-
@Winger He is playing for Hanazono Kintetsu Liners in Japan's Division 1. At least there he will be one of the taller locks running round and has helped his team hold a solid 12th spot on the table. It must be noted that there are just the 12 teams commpeting!

@DaGrubster I guessing he still get's AB money , but not Canes?
I like you and see positives, and can understand why players do it.I am sure @DaGrubster likes you too.
Lol appear to have missed the word "am" as I am like you. But just out of interest, I am friends with DaGrubster anyway, have known him since he a kid (he played cricket and rugby with my son as well as being his best man), so perhaps your reply falls a little short mate!!!

Hurricanes assistant coach Tyler Bleyendaal will link with Irish powerhouse club Leinster ahead of the 2024-25 season.
-
Forgot to note this in here post match, but I went to the game against the Chiefs, and it stood out to me that Laidlaw basically stood at half way pre match, and watched the Chiefs in detail. For every 5 minutes of warm up he was observing the Chiefs as opposed to anything we were doing.

Do Canes fans think this will be a big loss? How is he regarded as a coach?
-
@antipodean I think he was fairly inexperienced when he came into the Canes so not the biggest loss. Hopefully we can pick someone up that can advance our attacking play.

OK It's strange that 2 Canes coaches (Plumtree/ Gibbes) rated him so highly. Obviously, few other coaches do. But Blackwell always gave his best so it's not him to blame
I see Caleb DELANY is showing as 1.97 / (1.98 on Wikipedia)
Bio
Caleb DELANY is a 24-year-old New Zealander rugby player standing at 1.97 m tall (6 ft 6 in) and weighing in at 115 kg (18 st 1.53 lb; 253.53 lb) , who currently plays for Hurricanes in New Zealand as back row. -

Blyendaal has the potential to become a very good coach, you've got to remember he's only 33 & it was his first coaching gig, most are still playing at that age. he was a very intelligent flyhalf while playing over in Europe & was very unlucky not to get capped for Ireland under Schmidt, also captained the NZ U20 side of 2010, think he will do very well coaching in the URC, a competition where he thrived as a player at Munster.

Hurricanes extensions continue
Isaia Walker-Leawere through to 2026
Caleb Delany through to 2027 -
@ruggabee I'd think it's a money thing - get a few more dollars under his belt then hopefully back to NZ for a more senior coaching position if he gets the results over there.
Laidlaw did inherit a few coaches presumably with a few years left on their contracts. I'm sure he'll have ideas for replacements for anyone who has left, either of their own accord or not.

Caleb Delany through to 2027In addition to these signings it would be perfect if we can re-sign Justin Sangster. That would give us three experienced locks for the next three years. That would then give Tom Allen and Josh Taula plenty of development time so they are ready to take over when some of these other guys move on.

Not looking like good news
What's Raymond like?
With Jacob Devery’s season already cut short by injury, it would leave O’Reilly as the only fit hooker from the three that were originally named in the Hurricanes squad for 2024.
Raymond Tuputupu is part of the wider training squad but the 21-year-old has not been seen on the Super Rugby field since he famously made his Hurricanes debut in 2022 after receiving a last-minute call-up and making a mad dash from Palmerston North to Wellington on game day.
-
@Winger Aumua is going to be a massive loss and probably the one player (aside from maybe Lomax) we couldn't afford to really lose. O'Reilly has been solid but it's Aumua's physicality that will be miss most. Aswell as the fact he's been in career best form.
It's hard to gauge Tuputupu because he hasn't really played much over the last couple seasons. Based on pre-season form he looked solid but he's still really green and will be a massive drop from Aumua. Fingers crossed the injury isn't as bad as first feared. It seems like injuries might be the only thing stopping the Canes this year.
