Rough to call Jacobson a "failed" AB. He's not a highlight player, but also not an error prone one.

He's not been selected by a coach who is a poor selector, particularly of loose forwards. I would have picked him over Frizzel every time.

    Ineffective then?

Frizzel is a low bar to meet anyway.

Jacobsen's biggest 'fail' in my eyes was a propensity to be penalised. I don't have the stats but he seems to have cleaned that up heaps

I really rate him - can see him having a solid future, and a real contender for higher honours. Injury didn't help him in 2019 or more recently

Not ineffective either. Less effective than the man you want in the position, possibly, but that's personal judgement.

He may not have been able to push out Frizzel. But then, neither has Ioane. So I don't really count that against either.

    The issue with Jacobson is I think he's a better 8 than a 6.

We have a few pretty fair #8s floating around the country at the moment

I agree, however he is probably an 8 that is suited to 6 if that makes sense.
He isn't so much the ranging back (or out) type 8.
A tight loosie, so to speak.
His tackle counts are high and his tackles hard and effective. He carries hard and commits defenders to go to ground (and stay there for a bit)

It could be worse, but it is noticeable how much slower the game is setting scrums and lineouts with the Aust refs.

And if we go to last weekend, Brumbies will be able to go off feet at rucks without too much worry!
I think he is very liberal with allowing players to seal off at ruck, and also with use off gate to enter ruck!

That's the Chiefs team I expected if all players were fit.

Ok I'll assume the Chiefs website knows their own team. Updated my post

must be very close to early fan picking of a first XV at the squad announcement time.

Went back in the Chiefs 23 thread and found this

    @Bovidae said in Chiefs 2023:

This is the team I expect:

    1 Ross
    2 Taukei'aho
    3 Ta'avao
    4 Retallick
    5 Vaa’i
    6 Ah Kuoi
    7 Cane
    8 Jacobson
    9 Weber
    10 Gatland (McKenzie)
    11 Nanai-Seturo/Malimali
    12 Nankivell/Poihipi
    13 Lienert-Brown
    14 Stevenson (Narawa)
    15 McKenzie (Stevenson)

    16 Thompson
    17 Norris
    18 Moli/Dyer
    19 Selby-Rickit
    20 Sowakula
    21 Roe
    22 Poihipi/Nankivell
    23 Narawa (Gatland/Ioane)

    Pretty close
No AT so at the time Ryan wasn't in the frame.
    Finau hadn't leaped ahead
Roe may have kept Ratima at bay if not injured.

So in that respect we've got the team we wanted. No glaring omissions or bad picks

My guesses in the backs were based on where DMac played. I favoured the players in brackets, but wasn't sure the coaches would agree with me.

Blindside is the most interesting as McMillan talked up using Ah Kuoi in the media but never followed through on it.
