Impressed by Segner. It was probably his best ever game in Super Rugby. He has a massive engine and is technically sound. A FAB ?
Ma'u did very well: Ofa T was probably tired but Lay was owned at every scrum. How many penalties did he win ? These got the Landers back in the game. Unfortunately for them, their back play is inept.I like that boy, but admit to being keen on him since I saw him for NZ schoolboys against Aus at Ballymore a few years back. He's someone who just keeps at job, no matter if he 6,7 or 8.
No way am I saying he is as good, or is going to be anywhere near as good as Michael Jones, but last night there was something about the way he ran with the ball and the way he scooped up that loose ball before taking off down field that reminded of a young MJ. Running style perhaps?
Not sure what it is, he just reminds me of players like MJ, who seem to not overplay hand, but still keeps invloved almost all the time. He would be starting for Blues more often if I was coach, which of course isn't knocking Blues coaches, maybe says why I never got higher than senior club coach? lol

The Blues have a surfeit of loosiesness

Ben O'Keeffe is a good referee. I'm not having the criticism, I thought the natural flow of the game last night was good (the constant scrums weren't his fault, and I thought he refereed them as well as you can). His feel of the game is way better than all the other officials in the comp.

Agree mate, and understand why he doesn't get a lot, just I a fan.

@taniwharugby yep. Thought BOK was let down by his assistants.

He's easily the best ref in the SH.
-
@antipodean that’s terrifying.

The bar isn't that high but BOK is a decent ref with a good feel of the game and a desire to work with players an adjust to the game.
I think that his style is often to watch what both teams are doing then if it appears that they both want to play a certain way he won't rule strictly in that area as long as the game flows.
Of course if you are watching only the other side you will see plenty of fault. -
@Crucial whatever. He’s very strict then not, the lack of consistency opens up the door for criticism.
My impression is that he calls the Blues for stuff he lets go for the opposition, but if you don’t agree you can’t argue he’s consistent because he’s not.
Just last night he was just letting offside shooting up, and the calls us for very technical penalties on attack. Ruins the flow of the game.

And he was really only making these terrible calls against the Blues?
Ask yourself why that would be. You’re accusing him of deliberately favouring one side which just seems bollocks.
Maybe your impression is caused by your own bias?
He makes mistakes like all refs but I would rather have him than most of the others. -
@Kirwan said in Blues v Highlanders:
No, I’m saying he’s inconsistent and swings between being pedantic and too loose. Ruins the flow and annoys fans who see the opposition get away with some their team gets pinged for a few minutes earlier.
He tends to ref on relevance/consequences. Happy to let something go if it doesn’t materially advantage or disadvantage a team but blows if it does.
I don’t mind that style. It’s better than the likes of Pickerall who is happy to blow inconsequential acts. -
Offside play has consequences, he was letting that go in the second half (and I was blaming his touchies too for that).
In past games I also noted similar side entries being allowed or not allowed depending on who the fuck knows. Same relevance, different result.

didn't deserve the win or to make play offs, at least i dont have to watch us get a hiding next week and can try and enjoy some games as a neutral

Shitty game.. move along
Have the Blues changed up their attack in the last 2-3 matches? The backs seem to be aligned deeper and there seems to be more forwards doing pick and goes or running lines very close to the breakdown.
As mentioned in the press conference it was working in the first half before the errors/frustration/whatever
