Impressed by Segner. It was probably his best ever game in Super Rugby. He has a massive engine and is technically sound. A FAB ?
Ma'u did very well: Ofa T was probably tired but Lay was owned at every scrum. How many penalties did he win ? These got the Landers back in the game. Unfortunately for them, their back play is inept.

One thing about this game that was very clear - the attacking side was allowed to enter the ruck with a lot of latitude, and go beyond it in many cases. An international referee might give a lot of penalties against that stuff.

Segner, Robinson, and Tucker all did it often for the Blues. As did several others.

Papalii awful as an eight. No ability at back of scrum. Made Christie even worse.

I like that boy, but admit to being keen on him since I saw him for NZ schoolboys against Aus at Ballymore a few years back. He's someone who just keeps at job, no matter if he 6,7 or 8.

13-6 to Blues in the 32nd minute.

Hope the fuck did that try stand?

Ginge 6 took two players out on dummy run that was so far ahead of the pass it looked like it came from the future

No he didn’t. He ran at a gap and they moved to him leaving the line open. Huge difference.

No way am I saying he is as good, or is going to be anywhere near as good as Michael Jones, but last night there was something about the way he ran with the ball and the way he scooped up that loose ball before taking off down field that reminded of a young MJ. Running style perhaps?

Harmon was immense again. Without a doubt the best NZ 7 in the comp. The scrum battle was awesome. Whatever Lualala's weaknesses in general play he really is a rock-solid scrummager. De Groot had the test of the season tonight.

    Double upvote!

de Groot has said that Laulala is his toughest opponent in the scrum.

But the scrum half has to at least pretend he’s going to pass to him

    This was Level 1 magic

Regardless of whether the dolts bought it

Not sure what it is, he just reminds me of players like MJ, who seem to not overplay hand, but still keeps invloved almost all the time. He would be starting for Blues more often if I was coach, which of course isn't knocking Blues coaches, maybe says why I never got higher than senior club coach? lol

I see Ben O’Thief is at his usual standard. What a terrible ref.

Good to get the result playing poorly with the subs. Flush it and move on.

Ben O'Keeffe is a good referee. I'm not having the criticism, I thought the natural flow of the game last night was good (the constant scrums weren't his fault, and I thought he refereed them as well as you can). His feel of the game is way better than all the other officials in the comp.

@friedrugby he’s consistently terrible, but also wasn’t helped by the touchies. Offsides we’re just waved on, hope they don’t ruin the finals.

@Kirwan I think that is a huge part of the problem, they are a team, yet often the ref is the lone ranger and makes you wonder what the ARs actually do when you think some of what they miss.

@taniwharugby yep. Thought BOK was let down by his assistants.

He's easily the best ref in the SH.

The bar isn't that high but BOK is a decent ref with a good feel of the game and a desire to work with players an adjust to the game.
I think that his style is often to watch what both teams are doing then if it appears that they both want to play a certain way he won't rule strictly in that area as long as the game flows.
Of course if you are watching only the other side you will see plenty of fault.

@Crucial whatever. He’s very strict then not, the lack of consistency opens up the door for criticism.

My impression is that he calls the Blues for stuff he lets go for the opposition, but if you don’t agree you can’t argue he’s consistent because he’s not.

Just last night he was just letting offside shooting up, and the calls us for very technical penalties on attack. Ruins the flow of the game.
