How can a team actually legally defend in that situation?

They’ve come in to support their man, they’re not obliged to let him go like the tacklers are
If Sotutu's knees are on the ground (a tackle) he shouldn't be able get up again.

You can't, some tries you can't stop, that's fine

If they had realeased him, they wouldn’t have had the opportunity for a drive.
