Wracking my brain trying to think of another professional sports coach who has the job for a full season knowing he's not wanted?
Very strange fucking time
I actually don't know how I feel about it to be honest.
I want to believe everyone is a stone cold professional and just gets on with the job. But that's fantasy.
If Foster isn't their guy he shouldn't be there now. It's all ridiculous really.
I think Malthouse to Buckley at Collingwood was similar.
It was a bit ugly from memory. -

Imagine if the NZRU stuck Razor in as an assistant now to get him acclimatised?

It was a bit ugly from memory. It was ugly due in large part because of the bizarre succession plan thing they had going. Buckley was Malthouse’s assistant and was basically serving out his time and then Eddie had to put everyone out of their misery and they gave the reins to Buckley. One journo said to me there was a bit of backgrounding going on as well. This all despite Collingwood producing great results in 2009, 10 and 11.
In theory if this wasn’t a RWC year (and the NZRU had their act together), Razor would’ve been brought in immediately.

lol, like last year before South Africa happened?
-
Ha, Razor told his dad about getting the AB gig yesterday, and his dad didnt believe him as he hadnt read anything in the media yet...
I expect the shiny new Razor effect will wear off in the next month or 2 now the appointment is made, allowing the focus to go back to Super Rugby, TRC and then the RWC.

Someone might have already posted this - interesting to see Conrad on the panel.
The panel of NZ Rugby CEO Mark Robinson, board members Dame Farah Palmer and Bailey Mackey, NZR head of high performance Mike Anthony, former All Black Conrad Smith and Eddie Kohlhase, of High Performance Sport NZ and a former Black Sox softball coach.
yeah, wonder why? isn't he a lawyer? so maybe the combo of lawyer/player? but you might have thought former captains?
Because he's smart as fuck, and had been heavily involved with NZ and international players associations. Done a bit of coaching, too

Agree, but they didn’t have their act together unless you call making frantic midnight phone calls and rushing around like headless chooks cooking up some plan was their plan….

Yeah the situations are different in that Malthouse had been successful, and Buckley was the club’s favourite son and north melb in particular threw a decent coaching offer buckleys way . So they thought they were being clever in locking him away for the future . I don’t think they were prepared for how pissed off malthouse would become over the whole scenario.
Fozzie isn’t Malthouse .

Unfortunately I feel that that NZR hasn't really set Razor up for success.
A lot of criticism of the appointment of Fozzie was that the process was predetermined before it begun hence we "didn't get the right man for the job".
NZR has made it very easy for the exact same criticism to be thrown at Razor (in fact I guarantee it if a losing streak comes along).
Hopefully he wont be in that predicament as he's simply a better coach but oh, how the media will turn...
-
Rumors that Wayne smith may have a role similar to what schmidts was before he became more hands on

It would make sense as Wayne Smith has been a mentor to Razor.
-
any AB success in 2024 down to Wayne Smith and Wayne Smith only
100% nailed on rolled gold fact
-
Hopefully this appointment makes Foster think - "I'll show these c-unts"

Big difference between the two men’s record as head coaches, be hard to pull that card here.

The German soccer team do this sort of thing regularly.
The Scandinavian countries as well. The current coach of the Norwegian national team was actually supposed to have taken the position years back but Cologne poached him while he was waiting (compensation was paid to the Norwegian federation). He then got sacked by Cologne after like 5 months. The equivalent would be some cashed-up French team poaching Razor during the next 12 months.

@taniwharugby I truly hope that nothing about assistant coaches leaks to the media. All attention should now go to the RWC. Let the clickbait media wait. I'm sick of all the nonsense speculation.

@Stargazer I expect it will mostly die off in a few weeks or so, but in the meantime there will of course be plenty of speculation.

Ha that’s not going happen
The assistants are likely to impact SR teams. Those SR coaches need to be replaced, maybe from NZ coaches who are overseas. Lots of negotiations for leaks to happen.
There’s going to be plenty for the media to speculate about in the coaching merry-go-round. -
@Stargazer it's well known who razor will take Scott Hansen and 2 more

Hansen is an attack / game strategy guy now, correct? Will he go back to defence or stay there?
So, we need a defence coach and maybe a specific backs / attack coach?
I'd like a skills coach similar to Mic the kick again.

Hansen I think will stay with attack/Game strategy.
Razor may take over the defence he started out with Canterbury as a defence coach that was his specialty.
Looks to me like a backs coach and depending on Razor a defence coach.

That would give Leon the best chance, Shirley?
He could gut the Saders and bring Ellison for defense as well I guess. Any chance he could bring in a northern hemisphere person? Any out of box picks like a Jono Gibbes (he’s out of a job right now if I recall)?

Yeah I think it would be a possibility,Razor will think outside the box we may see a NH person attached to the group.
I would throw out the names of Vern Cotter,Ronan O’Gara,Andy Goodman as all a chance -
If he wants to think outside the box for a defence coach look to a former RL player. Someone like Ruben Wiki.

RL defence coaches are so far in the box that that is the opposite of innovation

Wonder with that gossip about Ryan snubbing Razor once he got the AB gig and Razor mentioning the word 'loyalty' in his coaching team that he might bypass Jason Ryan.
Seems unlikely, but wondering if it is a possibility.
Any sauces from the Canterbury guys here?
-
What about Chris Boyd? His appointment with the Highlanders was for one year only.

I doubt Ryan would be so short-sighted but if true that would be a shame, the forwards noticeably improved when he joined the AB coaches.

Not sure about were that went,Rumour says they are all good now.
But not 100% on that. -

Might have been waiting to see how things shake out with the new AB coaching gig, so he could step in to a Super head role. Looks like at least two head coach positions will be available (assuming Razor takes one of Panadol or Holland).
I'd prefer not to lose him now that he is finally selecting some players in the right place (e.g., Dmac 10, Stevenson 15) but McMillan could be a smokey to be involved, in which case it could be potentially three jobs.
-
@gt12 yeah, good way to re familiarise himself with the lay of the land
-
@Kiwiwomble One thing is for sure there is going to be a real vacum left in the Super Franchises with coaches leaving for the All Black spot. With the possible signing of Brad Shields, it would be good to have a slight reversal of our player exodus.

McMillan might be better off sticking with the Chiefs as a head coach.

I just clicked that razors four years doesn't have a mid way check, it's a four year contract. That's the first in a while.
