Fiji v Georgia
Australia v Portugal
SA v TongaWhat these four matches has shown is the underdogs have legitimately 5-6 scoring opportunities during a match, which if converted puts real pressure on their superior opponents and makes a real game of it
Unfortunately lack of accuracy and quality of finishing means they only convert 2-3 of these opportunities
If the officiating team gets things wrong that further diminishes their chance of scoring
Too many times in these four matches the officiating team got it wrong robbing the minnow of points, scoreboard pressure, and momentum
A real shame

true, he could have answered, "Well, I don't know how they would match fix accidentally!"

The deliberate match fixing is nonsense,
But I guess what is possible, Scotland throw the kitchen sink knowing if they lose they are going home ,
And Ireland go in knowing they have done enough to qualify win, lose or draw
And from those mindsets , stranger things have happened than an upset of these proportions.
Still unlikely though imo

5th ranked team vs 1st.
It’s not out of the question for them to knock them over.

The Boks and NZ could I imagine not be focussed on a game and already be thinking a game ahead and get a nasty shock, but this Ireland team? They seem too disciplined. Prove me wrong, Scotland!

Based on form you'd have to go with Ireland, they know they need at least a point and they've demonstrated the capacity to maintain standards. Only this year securing the 6N grand slam.
Like everyone else, the issue is can they do it for five games in a row? Even in the 6N they had Italy half way through and only won by two tries.

So the weekends games that impact finals
France v Italy. France by a fair bit
Ireland v Scotland. Ireland by a fair bit
Argentina v Japan. ArgentinaI just can't see an upset anywhere.

We would need something pretty sensational to happen this week to elevate this Group stage above "meh"
With the top 4 sides in two pool, AND the same side of the draw, we were treated to big games with nothing significant riding on the result.
On the other side we've had the Wallabies absolutely shit the bed, otherwise it's been very ho hum.Couple of pretty fun games of footy, but in the end a set of quarter finals that end up being very predictable.

The knockout stages of the RWC are very much like an historical account of the sinking of the Titanic, more often than not written from the perspective of the usual protagonists but every once in a while written from the perspective of a minor character who just happened to be on board
The narrative that one side of the draw is severely compromised whilst the other half is sipping pastis on the Côte d’Azur is getting tiresome
If Scotland were that good they would have made the QF in 2019 and come away with at least 1 try against SA this time

NZ v Ireland
Wales v France
Japan v SAThis time it should be
England v Fiji
NZ v Ireland
Wales v Argentina / Japan
France v SASo 6 of the 2019 Quarter Finalists, if not 7 (if Japan beat Argentina)
The Pool stages have been fascinating IMHO
Permutations galore
And it isn’t finished yetBest RWC to this stage for me
And we could end up with same 4 Semi Finalists as 2019 or a big shake up and four different ones, including first SF for Fiji and Japan
