Winning percentage did not help and I am sure losing to Italy probably just pushed the knife further in from the "he's not Strayan" club.

Strange times, Gatland, now Jones.. I wonder if Rudolph Straeuli and John Mitchel preparing for his multiverse

As I said on GAGR: international coaching is a bit like Corporate Executive; once you're in you always have a gig - no matter your reputation or history.

Is that what Eddie told them in his interview?

“It is a major coup for Australian Rugby to have the best coach in the world return home to coach the iconic Wallabies and to oversee the Wallaroos program,” McLennan said.

McLennan is on drugs. Incredibly stupid less than a year out from RWC and only makes sense if their focus is RWC 2027 in Australia. I like Eddie Jones alot but he's not the team/culture builder that Rennie was. He's what Aussie's call a shit-stirrer and IMO Rugby Aus will regret this in a couple of seasons time.

This will be Eddie’s last big international coaching job and he’s returned home. This is a legacy moment for him and he’s a pretty proud man, so I think there will be some changes. From all reports he’s learned a heap about man management from his stints in SA, Japan and England. He’s still a little old school but I think the approach will be different.

Whether that translates to results, well who knows.

I think it’s a very good appointment and a right fit for what really is an up and down side that when they are good they are really good and when they play poor they are a 7th or 8th ranked side.

from a management perspective this is an interesting case

it appears, from teh outside, the Rennie has spent 3 years building culture and depth, to varying levels of success depending on how you look at it. And it's cost him his job.

Did RA sign off on the plan and vision?
Is this just a decision by RA to get who they see as the best coach available?

Didn't the wallabies have a camp like a week ago? Anything worked on is already redundant.

All Blacks should hire Rennie as defence coach

Rennie is an attack coach, always has been, Schmidt has had great success before as a defence coach.

AB's backroom staff for World Cup: Schmidt: defense, Rennie: attack, Ryan: forwards, Feek: set-piece.

The Australians, even when losing under Rennie, could always attack. I'd be very happy with that set-up.

But there is no chance Rennie will work under Foster.

Why's that? If he hasn't got a Japanese gig lined up as rumoured then a rest with the family followed by a short term gig with ABs could be a good option for him.

Let's see if the current Wallaby assistant coaches are interested in staying now, or wanted. Are Fisher and Jones close with the ACT connection? RA better get used to paying out backroom staff as Eddie churns through his assistants.

I don’t think there is any bad blood there but they do have very different philosophies on the game.

Fisher sings to his own song sheet. Can't see him working with Eddie but I can see Larkham going back as attack coach. He took the fall for Cheika and then Rennie does his own attack.

Money? He'll get better money elsewhere, by far.

Fame? He doesn't seem like that sort of guy.

And if the ABs win, how much would he enjoy seeing Foster take the credit? That would be the killer for me -- there is literally no upside for him in doing it.

There's only one reason he might take an assistant gig, and that would be out of (misplaced) loyalty to NZR.

To quote you back "he doesn't seem like that sort of guy". I think if he thinks he can help the ABs win then he'd do it regardless of Foster. Plus, he only needs to read the Fern to know that Ryan gets all the credit anyway.

I don't think he'd do it out of misplaced loyalty to NZR, just a desire to see the ABs win.

genuinely laughing at using Eddie's "world cup win percentage" as this amazing thing.

Generally, the big teams lose once a world up. If you win your pool games and lose your quarter, boom! 80% win percentage achieved!

to quote myself, this is starting to do my head in

Most Successful World Cup Coach ever!!
(if you are exceedingly generous and give him a lot of credit for his "advisory" role with SA in 2007.

But even beyond that, there's a bloke called Steve Hansen who wants a word.

From some reports out of England he's learned nothing about man management.

That could be circumstantial tho; I read Mat Rogers' book recently and his last year at the Titans in NRL he was confronted with a change room full of guys silently scrolling their phones. It was a marked change from when he departed the NRL to join rugby, and he figured (along with his failing body) that was the point he was done.

@kiwi_expat Schmidt has been an attack coach since he was an assistant coach for BOP. He is the attack coach for the All Blacks.

IIRC, Farrell was the defence coach for Ireland, and Mike Catt was the attack coach, under Schmidt.

Last time Eddie Jones was appointed Wallabies coach Iphones, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook did not exist and even harder to imagine Australia actually held the Bledisloe Cup.

@ACT-Crusader There'll perhaps soon be some guys in the Wallabies squad who weren't even born then.

Does anyone still have the Day In The Life Of Eddie Jones piece from back in the day?
