Wellington Lions 2023

Interesting seeing Alex Fidow named in the Wellington Samoan squad. Would suggest he didn't make an NPC squad? Interesting I always thought he was a pretty good player, even at Super level.
-
@Duluth he was playing off the bench for Ories this year and was actually spending some time in the backs.
He’s lost a tone of weight but I’m sure if he finds the right position he could make a professional come back at some point. Don’t think it will be in the front row though.

I was hoping the info provided to fans might have improved under Ellison and Paku. Sadly it's worse. No details on player stats on the lions website. And team announcements are last minute. But maybe I expect too much. This would involve some extra work and we can't have that. Instead just do the bare minimum to get by.

I suspect they don't have a comms person at the moment t. The role is split 50/50 between Wellington and the Canes. Pays like shit. Don't tend to keep staff for more than a season. The ad was posted in mid June. Even if they found someone. I doubt they would be in place now https://www.wrfu.co.nz/news/position-vacancy-communications-and-content-manager

That job description is a bit bonkers: https://www.wrfu.co.nz/fileadmin/user_upload/Job_Advertisement_Communications_and_Content_Manager_7_.pdf
Quite a few jobs rolled into 1 there...
-
it would have been Asafo Aumua (at hooker) but he pulled a calf at the weekend and is out for 6-8 weeks.
-
@Stargazer hopefully he comes back around the 6week mark.
-
How completely thick of Wellington rugby to name this accused three days after this incident took place. Incident took place on 18 June. Police press release says man charged on 19 June. On 20 June the accused was named in wider Wellington squad. Shit me. His name has now been removed from the squad on the Wellington website. But, material at the time is still there. What the heck were they thinking.
I know @Canes4life you think I unfairly pick on Wellington. But, come on. This is just shithouse.
I hope someone goes after Wellington Rugby for this.
-
@SouthernMann yeah that’s a bit of a shocker. He’s not a name that I’m that familiar with. I don’t think he was named in the actual Lions squad was he?
-
@SouthernMann I would assume they were not aware? Just because he was charged on the 19th doesn't mean anyone would have disclosed it to the union unless someone was actively checking.
I doubt whoever is naming the squad is checking police reports.
And given next to no journalistic interest in NPC these days, no third party would have checked either.
-
@foobaNZ he’s not even a top Wellington player aswell. I assumed he was announced in the Lions squad going from @SouthernMann’s post but he was announced in a wider development squad.
Obviously he should be charged accordingly but I don’t think there needs to be an uproar against Wellington, it’s not like he’s on a contract or anything.
-
@Canes4life yea, to me it would be a stretch to think Wellington were even aware.
-
What it shows is poor process. If you are naming a squad, or an announcement with potential public profile. Check, check and check again for issues which may cause problems. Fully understanding this happened over a weekend, and the announcement on Monday. You do a quick ring around, are there any issues which we need to be aware of. From a reputational management perspective, Wellington is just lucky this happens in a time no one gives a toss about the NPC.
-
@SouthernMann it’s got nothing to do with the NPC because its not an NPC squad. Tuitama is just a club player so this should really have nothing to do with the Lions. I’d agree if it was the naming of Wellington’s NPC squad but it’s not. Move on, just the media trying to make something out of nothing.
-
He was named in a Wellington squad to defend the Ranfurly Shield, which would have been first class fixtures.
