FIFA World Cup 2022

@No-Quarter but cricket has come some way after an appalling period of LBW calls and caught behinds. There was plenty of player dissent as bowlers walked back to their run ups past an umpire. Or a batter giving death stares after shockers and handing out a few choice words. DRS and reviews have had a significantly positive impact on the game.

@mariner4life the arm flapping at the ref in rugby which has been going on for years is another one I can’t stand.
@voodoo I honestly think that it will take a generation to change in football. If some ref today tried to stamp it out by handing out cards and warnings etc, he would probably be lynched after the match (that’s how bad it is)
They tried it one season in England
Lasted 3 matches

Did Harry miss a pen? He's usually so reliable, but he was facing his club captain in Lloris, who's probably faced him more than anyone else
Hoofed it over
Wow that's not his usual play. Nerves
Hoofed it over about 3 goals.
Great effort by Rashford, gets that 6 inches lower and it's going into a defender's head anyway.
What the fuck was the point in bringing on the invisible Sterling before Rashford?
Particularly when Saka was the most threatening player on the pitch.

Terrible coaching from Southgate
Rashford should have had 30 at least

Yeah you already see refs getting pushed and pulled when leaving the pitch over relatively minor decisions, I really don't get why they or the association put up with it.

Agreed. Sara and Henderson also should have stayed on as they were both owning that right side.

It was a plan as cunning as a fox that had just been made Professor of Cunning at the Sorbonne from the French last night.
-
Foul the English repeatedly if they got in the box and hope the Brazilian referee would not give Les Rostbifs a penalty.
-
Hope that the thought of 56 years of hurt would weigh heavily on English minds as they waited to kick the ball from twelve yards.
It worked a treat.

The 'wouldn't happen in rugby' comment was stupid as we have all seen times when things flipped into that territory in passionate moments ('Four more years'?) and certain players out there (look for the green shirts ) are happy to be the ref's faces all the time.
Instead of finger pointing at individual happenings though, take a step back and observe the pervading cultures of the sports.
I admire the skills of football and also how, what is a simple game, generates such rabid fandom. However, if I had a kid involved in the sport I would be doing lots to try to counter the messages they received as part of the game. For me, sports for kids are a great way of them learning life lessons and I just don't like the lessons that are an acceptable part of behaviour in football.
Respect the officials and respect the opposition are still a big part of rugby despite the odd idiot. I can't say the same for football.
Just my opinion.

Henderson was running around like a madman in the 2nd half until the time he came off and was also covering a lot of ground in the first half - it was clear he had been told when he was to be subbed. Not sure on Saka and if he could have played at the same level for the full 90/100.

But you've gotta admit that '4 more years' is good banter, versus just screaming in the oppositions faces

Wow, I've been shocked at today. It's genuinely felt like a day after AB's knocked out of RWC day.
Kind of amazing in that I expected England to lose this match & had close to zero hope of them winning the tournament. That and I guess I didn't realise I was THAT Big of a fan of their team. Ok, thats not true.
The game was a great match. England had a lot of control but France were just so strong on the break. They were so fast, and it really felt like their up front guys were a class above. England players are just not at the same level, although there is a lot of young talent there so they should be a real chance over the next couple of tournaments (which means they won't).
Very unpredictable semi finals. I'm seeing France-Argentina final with France prevailing. My support will be for the Croat's though. Really big fan of this team.
It has also been really nice to read nothing about fan trouble, zero arrests etc. Might be something in this Qatar blueprint, after all. Who would've thunk it!

@KiwiPie
You’re dreaming. That’s the kind of thing that turns people off soccer. He was barely touched.Really? You've not watched much of the game then have you? Every professional would have gone down at that point from any nation. Lord Harry Kane is a master of it.
Just because they would all do it doesn't mean that it doesn't turn people off the game. Sport shouldn't be about play acting.
I used to hold this view too. But as KiwiPie states above, it was a clear penalty and those that follow the game a lot understand why.
The thing is, that there is diving and then there is diving. Just because you didn't necessarily get physically taken out, it doesn't mean that it's not a penalty. In a lot of situations, the player will avoid the contact and go down to prove the point. If a leg is just thrown out there, and your direct path is blocked by it (and especially when in the box), your choices are either
- Run in the leg, risk injury, go down and likely get the penalty
- Avoid the leg, go down & likely get the penalty
- Take a less direct route the ball which means you may lose a sec or so & then continue on at a disadvantage of what you should have been.
This certainly doesn't apply in all situations, but there has been a few where people call diving when ithe player has taken option 2. There are genuine bullshitting divers out there, don't get me wrong. But the above happens a lot.
Side note on the Saka situation yesterday. the VAR check was right, as it wasn't a penalty. However, how the fuck the ref didn't call the foul initially (and therefore a free kick to England just outside the box), I'll never know. It was about as a blatant of a foul as you'll see.

Daniele Orsato is the ref for the Argentina-Croatia game. He has been good in the games I've seen him officiate. Reading some of the stories about the behaviour of the Argentinean players towards the Dutch after the penalty shootout I hope Croatia wins. The Argies need to win in normal time otherwise their fate is sealed.

Don’t think that was a penalty. No wonder people get turned off soccer.
The one Kane slotted into the net? That's a clear cut example of what a penalty should be: Defender misses the ball and takes out the attacked inside the box.

You need to have followed the Argentina vs Holland match comments. This was a firmly tongue in cheek comment
