These aren't upsets. These are games being thrown to avoid winning the Cup.
Nobody want a warehouse full of Budweiser dumped on them. They're assuming Qatar has no hope
Not that Qatar should mind winning all that Bud, its not really beer anyway...

Come on Cameroon
Oooh and I just saw a video from the Argentina game where one of the early offsides was wrong, and another player may have played the Argie on.

Rassie Erasmus is half-Argentinian? Never knew.

Not a great tournament so far for the African teams - 4 games and an African team has yet to score a goal.
Perhaps Ghana can surprise.
-
Ghana nearly made it interesting when the Pork and cheese goalie went to sleep. Would have been nice to see the anguish on Ronaldo's face. Brazil has a team of midgets against the Serbs. Really don't have a point man to weather the pounding from the Serbs. Love their anticipation in defending though. Great pressure. Agree that France look good and surprised that Giroud still playing and has as many goals for France as he has.
-
that early game was alright for about half an hour when it looked like Cameroon would score off one of their many breaks
But the 2nd half was a bore. The Swiss took the lead, and then never looked like losing.
Over night the 4th 0-0 draw already. Portugal win 3-2 with everything happening in like 15 minutes. Brazil win.
A lot of dreary football, with teams very organised but not overly intent on breaking formation to get forward.

Serbia are hanging in there against Brazil.
Milinković-Savić, the Serbian keeper, who is very good was getting a work out. Did pretty well given how many chances the Serbian midfielders and defenders were giving Brazil.

More one-way traffic in the 2nd half but he did make some good saves, and could do nothing about the goals. Neymar's injury would have been the only concern for Brazil. I thought that Casemiro was the best player on the field and controlled the midfield.
-
That second goal for the Brazilians was pretty good. A question to those that follow soccer. Have they thought about cracking down on those head high scissor kicks? How would the refs have reacted if the Brazilian collected the defender's head?
-
@Bovidae interesting 2 half. In the first the Serbs were organized. Not sure why things changed in the second. I know the Brazilians discovered the outside shot that had to be respected. Maybe some fatigue but there was a turning point and it was all Brazil from then on. Perhaps just the constant pressure became insurmountable.

Neymar's injury may be a blessing in disguise. Sometimes in his self absorption he slows down the pace of the game. But he is magical at times. He turned that ankle pretty good but they can win through there first round without him.

Was it costs rica that denied nz a place? That’ll learn them.
Watching them get thumped kinda made me feel relieved it wasn't us who qualified.
Funny thing, the incompetent numpty ref who got CR through was actually the same ref for their pantsing by the Spanish.

Croatia v Morocco was fucking boring. No intent to attack at all.
Some old squads are battling too. Belgium and Argentina look ponderous. Germany are looking shit for the 2nd straight tournament.
Based on what i have seen so far, France look a level above. They are not only skillful, they are big and fast and skillful (tempered by their opposition being a bit shit). England v France in the quarters (should it pan out that way) will be awesome.
France may be the only thing that could potentially stop themselves. I think actually the harder the opposition they get, the more likely they are to win. They've looked vulnerable at times through complacency since 2018 - see, in particular, the last Euros, which they should have walked.

Brazil won the Copa América in 2019 without Neymar, and they have the depth in the squad to replace him. His role is different now as the no.10, not the main striker.
