We got a bit closer to the top 4 in Dubai, but need to do better in Cape Town.

They should be bringing all that back , my idea is a next tier above provincial but below national. A non world series tournament could be an option if the NZR and the current or future promotors were keen.

I like it but the issue may be whether the franchises would agree. Would they want the burden of running a separate 'code' alongside their XVs? They certainly wouldn't want to lose XVs players across to Sevens.

How about an elevated Nationals round. Qualifying tournament with top 6 entry to the 'Festival'. Add in some PI representation as suggested.
It should be more about the festival than the rugby. Make it a family event.
Would also provide a sorting ground for up and coming youngsters to shine and fill the gap after schools tournaments. Would also deepen the coaching resource

It would be different players to the ones that are in the 15's system. Under the franchise name but with sevens specific coaches/staff. We need to build depth in our sevens in both genders so I think there needs to be away to get more pro sevens players running around. Players could earn short term contracts over the sevens season..

It would probably be easier to select more development teams to play in Sevens tournaments around the world and in Fiji in particular.

But you see how that would place costs on the franchises that they may not be interested in. I would be happy with it being at provincial level for a pre-tournament then Maybe select a regional team using the franchise name I guess.
The other way would be for provinces to run proper sevens comps and select teams which then compete to play.
In the womens game especially there is a big crossover between the XVs and Sevens. Some players would be forced to make choices that may damage chances one way or the other.

However it is strctured, it would be good to replace the world series with a domestic comp tournament and revive what seems to have drifted off the calendar.

@Stargazer I remember the commentators telling a story that when she started she had never kicked a rugby ball in her life. The team had no kicker so she went and practiced and learned.

I assume that the National Sevens tournament is still happening? That was always great for talent identification.

That's our point. We haven't seen one since Covid and it appears to have dropped off the calendar completely. Provincial website have no mention of any schedule planning toward a selection either.

I should have been clearer. I meant is it returning after covid. You are indicating no.

I don't know. There is no indication that it is or isn't. There was plenty of opportunity for one this year.

Can see BF7s going all the way to the final again. This team of newbies is doing well but missing that little bit to beat the Convicts. If they managed it there would be some selection discussions to take place.

Why is Mikkelson still listed? I thought he was finished. If Baker has retired then scrap him from the list as well. Looking forward to seeing what Cook-Savage will bring. I assume he is Carter's replacement.

@Crucial I assume Mikkelson is still listed because he's still under contract? And Baker, because it's the first tournament after his retirement and some people may have missed the news? I don't see what's wrong with that.

Me too. The time difference sucks though, so hopefully some replays are shown.

Tim Mikkelson is two short of 100 AB sevens tournaments so I am sure he wants to be fit enough to knock off that milestone before retiring.

The sun is shining brightly in Cape Town. I wonder how hot is? Will that be a problem later in the afternoon?

Kaka just scored the first try for the BF7s.

    5 - 0 NZ
