Wellington v Northland
-
@FakatavaAllBlack our last win in Wellington was way back in 2000 and we usually get well beaten in the capital!
But with the weather and that we have a pretty strong looking squad, I think this will be our best chance in years!
-
Once upon a time we used to be Wellingtons bogey team in the early 90s, won three or four on the bounce IIRC. Then we did two on the trot 1999-2000.
However, these days is a different story, we’ve only had one win since in 2014 with a 35-5 drubbing. Another repeat of that would be nice this weekend. We have to expect a Wellington backlash after their limp display against Canterbury, so it’ll be tough again, but we can definitely do it.

The last year Wellington won the NPC

Interesting. TJ in the reserves. Is this just rotation? Or is it AB to NPC reserve HB.
The team was poor in the 2nd half against Canterbury so hope they can do better this week. I no longer expect too much but with this team at home I will hope for a win. Whereas last week I expected a big loss and was surprised they did so well in the 1st half
edit There are 12 super rugby players in the starting 15 but only 4 regular starters

More rotation I think, though we can't take this Northland team lightly - they've got enough experience in Goodhue, Goodhue, Robinson, Ranger, Moorby and Tu'ungafasi.
I feel like it's going to be an up and down season for Wellington this year. We've got enough talent in the squad to put some good performances together but if we start getting injuries it could be a long couple months.

Bit shit when Beervana pushes all the Rugby out to Porirua. That ground will be a mess in all this rain.
FPC games are usually free but this means you have to get a ticket for all games except the Schools final and fucked if I'm hanging around with all the feral schoolkids attending that one. Parking will be a nightmare as well.
-
@Crucial pretty sure Porirua Park had a revamp many years ago and the surface is well drained and sand based. Played a few seasons for Norths many moons ago and it was a great pitch to play on. Shouldn’t be an issue like other suburban grounds around Welly.
-
@J77 I haven't been there too long ago, and the pitch seems fine. It's the parking issue that's a big problem.
Edited to add that the last time I went to Jerry Collins Stadium for a game, I took the bus and walked from Porirua Station to the Stadium to avoid the parking issue. The weather was great then, though.
-
@taniwharugby that team can’t be right surely.. we have a prime opportunity to beat these dudes with our strongest available team in years and we name a predominantly B forward pack.. that would be the dumbest selection ploy ever.
Can only think of injuries again, but comms are terrible across all teams these days, so we’ll never know for sure.
-
@J77 very odd to have no Caird, Josh Goodhue or Tom...surely all 3 cant have been injured in the week?
Assume likely just an error, but Macilai on the right wing, not left?
Bringing Ross in isnt a huge surprise given how our starting front row last week struggled I guess, but the locks is a massive surprise, especially as this isnt leading into storm week.
-
@taniwharugby no bench named either.. if that is the team named I hope that was forced due to injuries, because any other reason wouldn’t be acceptable in my opinion.
One positive, is they have the wings right this week even though Macilai is on the opposite side to usual.

@Crucial I'm trying to remember whether the stands at Hutt Rec are much smaller than at Jerry Collins Stadium. Would parking have been easier there? It's indeed terrible at Jerry Collins Stadium.
Oh god imagine the cry from Petone if HOBM got to host a game. The stand isn't very big, I'm guessing if they did that they'd probably have to erect a temporary stand on the other side.
Residents would probably lose their shit too, parking wouldn't be that flash.
The Bellevue would be stoked though!

I remember when they erected extra seating at Hutt Rec for club final days a few years back, it worked really well. I also attended a game of three halves between the All Blacks, Canterbury and Wellington at Hutt Rec and I remember that atmosphere being superb. I would attend alot more Lions games if they were held in the Hutt.
