another disjointed competition...great
it's really not though. If you run 9 month seasons, and 3 month offseasons, you get
SH:
March to November, with inbound NH tours June-ish, SH internationals Aug-Oct dpeending, and then a northern tour in NovNH has a season October-June, with inbound tours in Nov, NH internationals whenever, and outbound tours in June.
The issues is 6N and then arranging domestic around international windows. But the concept is reasonably solid.
i dont mean disjointed as in the rugby season...more just NPC, Super and club champ....three smaller comps where there is too much riding on any one game....i'm of the camp i would rather see one 20-30 game season (like the premiership) where teams can build and experiment

8 week break July/August & again Jan/Feb
36 weeks play, no play in the traditionally worst of winter/summer in each hemisphere...
easy peasy!
lol yeah the 6N is going to move
keep dreaming fullas.

it's really not. Hence my comment about the internal comps being as agreed - but some standardisation in that space would be good, to allow sensible international calendars.
NPC this year finshes Oct 22 (final), and first AB game is Oct 29 I believe (read in the paper this morning I think) That's a typical tight fit.

Fuck it must be that pissy little window between NH season ending and starting again.
With an added layer of "We beat you guys so now we want a club championship because we think we can win" mentality from the north, which will get crushed by various player unions in the name of safety.
-
My issue is the nature of having a select 16 from the start with no change. That will drive inequities to the comps they come from.
Lets say that the Highlanders and Chiefs are left out from NZ. The other three franchises get more money, more games for supporter (more merch sales) and players flock to them for more opportunity meaning they can select stronger players. The other two franchises would become feeders.
Any set up like this needs to be like a European Cup where you earn participation but even then I can see an uneven distribution of talent in our own comps just as it happens in other countries. -

It would need to include all super rugby teams otherwise forget it. Make it a say a once every 4 years big event (replacing maybe end of year tours) with pools (say 8 pools with 5 teams = 40 teams playing home and away matches) then quarter finals etc. Or top 16.. With revenue shared between all teams in some way. Otherwise it will kill even more the weaker teams. The teams with ABs already get more money for their players so they are more likely to stay. If only 2 or 3 qualify it will make it more uneven without the weaker teams also getting a share of the money earned

Although - when it comes to the Southern Hemisphere sides... "the top seven sides from Super Rugby will qualify"... the bar is set pretty low. -
There is already enough rugby, some would say too much, certainly for the player welfare side of things. If this sort of comp were to proceed, then realistically it would have to replace something or things but what?
It’s just chasing £££ and $$$

No mate if you read it they talking about cutting NH comp ie no finals etc, so would think they would expect the same down here, once every 4 years. I still struggle to see it being that great, but guess if someone is going to put up enough money , are any unions/clubs finacially well off enough to say f*** off?
I still fail to be convinced it will get any traction. -
It's an annual story. Somebody floats it. It dies.
About time for the annual Hybrid Union-League story out of Australia ...
-
@Machpants kinda ... but that was usually rugby with some rule changes.
Usually some ex-Wallabies come out and spout some bullshit about the All Blacks versing* the Kaneroos in some sort of loigue game with maybe lineouts added and no flankers and how the world is going to fall in love with the greatest game in the woooorld.. and nothing happens

@Machpants I think you're confusing it with rapid rugby (that's twiggy ball).
Yup some sort of shit hybrid was my point, no one wants it.

What happened to that bullshit that Hansen was being paid to tout.
Can't even remember how many aside it was going to he I was that interested.
