Foster, Robertson etc
-
From afar that was an oustanding performance, Jo-burg is just a cauldron of fire - no bigger test
-
Tactics were on-point 'suddenly' and people knew what they were doing - Schmidt's influence plus Ryan?
-
Whitelock rolled back the years, irreplacable on that form
-
S. Barrett stood up
-
Frizzel stood up
-
Mounga looked like a real game manager, and Havili looked like he knew what to expect
-
Everyone made mistakes incl. Mounga, Havili, Fizzel but they stuck to a plan and still won
Personal views moving to the RWC?
-
Need consistent selection but -
-
Rieko to 11 not Clarke and ALB to 13 when back (Goodhue too slow), BB stays on the bench
-
Jordie Barrett didn't look like Bambi-on-ice these days - made the right plays and has a huge boot
-
Frig**ng stability during the rest of the RC including 6/7/8 - experiment only on the NH tour
-
Schmidt to be in charge of per-game tactics - guessing here on Joe's influence but definitely there were positive changes for this game
-
Lock-in Robertson post RWC or others will have him
As a neutral - the rugby was great because the ref was excellent, and a great game to watch, up there with Ireland 2013 (Owens), SA in Jo-burg 2013 (Owens!) and the RWC final 2015 (Owens!!)

Current rant: if NZR and Robinson don't want to be seen as an old boys club why the hell let Foster put his arm on Robinson's shoulder at the press conference..? (End rant)
What the....really? This is getting ridiculous. My manager gives everyone hugs whenever she sees them - does that mean we're part of an old boys club too? What about when I shake hands with other leadership members or give them a pat on the shoulder if I haven't seen them in a while?
Your manager does that at a national press conference while announcing who the coach is?
I don't understand your issue here, it's really bizarre. How the fuck does that make it an old boys network? I know you can occasionally be even more random than me, but this one is really fucking out there.
You don't understand because you did not read what I wrote. I never said it WAS an old boys club. But go ahead talking about your workplace cuddles as if that is in any way relevant.
Ohhhh it's only seen as an old boys club. Well that changes everything! A pat on the shoulder 🤣
I don't care anymore if you are sarcastic or not. It is bad optics for the NZR who (quite a few people think) need to look impartial and effective. Give him a hug or a (socially distant and appropriate?) handshake for god's sake after the announcement. Just don't let the ranters think it was a matey backroom deal.
-
@nostrildamus nobody thinks that except for you.

The only people who think it bad optics are likely the same back-room conspiracy theorists who secretly want the All Blacks to lose badly as they think it will bring their pet choice closer to the Head Coach role.
They can simply piss off. There's no need to pander to fruitcakes and loons.

I just think it could have been managed better, especially given Robinson called Foster his good friend earlier and the chair gave his "absolute backing and support" to both in the same sentence.
“I want to absolutely emphasise going forward that both Ian as head coach and Mark as chief executive have the board's absolute backing and support.”I hope I'm wrong, that no one will mention it, but it's potentially the sort of clickbait a Rattue or Reason might make a dig at. The NZR chose their coach. The die is cast until the RWC. Let the chips fall where they may. There's no point going on about the coaching now.

All we can hope for is that the team that has been assembled can build on the Ellis Park result. Joe will be more involved, Ryan will have more time to work with the forwards. I have set my expectations pretty low for France next year, whatever will be will be, and I just hope NZRFU have made sure all their ducks are in a row for succession post RWC23 (I know, it's probably asking too much)
-
It’s disappointing that Foster is retained. Hopefully he is more of a puppet coach with the others the primary contributors to the cause. Here’s to Mr. 67% and that’s generous.
By the look of it, he's very much in charge and getting Joe Schmidt involved is his idea. Been wanting to get him in the mix for over two years.
-
@Victor-Meldrew Yay!
-
I'm sure as f**k that NZR watches the Fern.
Only problem is they are always one step behind some of the rugby minds on here.
NZR 1/10 for the managerial bollocks over the past 4 years.
Still elated we have prob found a front row. Onward and upward.
Current Razor status: sheathed. -
As already stated once we found a decent 1-5 of forwards we become competitive and last game we were. Hooray

The change of tune by Robinson really points to that board meeting being more about the mis-steps he made than the Foster decision. Foster seemed to have support from everyone except the public and that was in part to Robinson not backing him with clear expectations and opening the door for masses of media pressure.
Robinson and his team (comms especially) look to be the real weak link in all this rather than the board. Maybe he has/had value to them in negotiating the Silverlake deal but he has shown a real lack of understanding in how the actual rugby side of things works as far as player and coach management goes. -
@nostrildamus said in Foster:
Could the NZR at least improve their coach selection process? More transparency for example. They could even ask ex-coaches for suggestions (not just Hansen and Henry).
Wasn't that the problem?
Making it an open transparent process rather than just selecting one/a team?

Sauce or wishful thinking?

, in the same way that Brian Lochore arguably did for Laurie's shambolic 1994 All Blacks efforts leading in to the '95 RWC campaign
Forgot about this. Lochore was a great coach. He never really got the credit he deserved for the first RWC win. It sort-of went to Hart and Wylie. At least until neither won when it mattered most
He never really got the credit he deserved for the first RWC win.
Huh? I don't think that is true at all.
I'm with Neps here.

@chchfanatic shafted or Robinson just fucking shit up as usual?
