Foster, Robertson etc

@Dan54 sports journalism, like most journalism i expeft, has been on the decline for many years, most sit on one side of the fence or the other: writing stuff to keep on good side, then the polar opposite, or opinion peice click bait articles.
Very little actual fact based journalism.

Phil Gifford , in the NZ Herald today, has a highly interesting insight into the process around the NZR’s appointment of a new coach after Hansen’s resignation in the 2019 World Cup aftermath.
Apparently, in a break from normal process, the NZR board did not interview the candidates, just a five-person selection panel with only one having rugby coaching experience (Graham Henry).
This amounts to a major failure of governance and tells you why this situation stinks so badly.

No real surprise is turned to custard, most on here thought it was the wrong choice, and most fans. So yeah, pile o poo for a while

@Machpants that says pretty much what the stuff Article says, and again breezes past Mcleod, like opposition players through our defence.
I have just been reading a few stuff write ups from this week, they really are not close to being sports journalists are they? We had write ups where Canes was gone, Schmidt was taking over someone spot etc, and funnily enough they were all wrong, I really don't think they are any different to any of us on here, have an idea , put it in writing, only thing is some people seem to think they have inside knowledge. Would love to have some old time journalists that actually toured with the team and built up relationships, so actually knowing what is going on!

That's hardly new news, we all new that anyway, was all pretty open at time, actually it is norm, hardly ever have a panel of coaches appointing coaches an any RU,Henry, Hansen just got interviewed by NZR, noone with coaching experience at all, everyone does same, just another case of click bait journalism. Only difference is many don't even have a panel, just offer the job to someone, Rennie never fronted a panel in Aus, same as Eddie Jones. Warren Gatland actually said he has never applied for a coaching job, Wales etc approached him.

If results and performances are poor throughout the Rugby Championship, I think Foster will be jetisoned before the EOYT.
Only a matter of time IMHO before Razor gets appointed All Blacks Head Coach now. Okay maybe Dave Rennie might get the job if he gets the Wallabies to the RWC Final.

@DaGrubster shocked he's only 57? I was shocked the other day when I learned he was once apart of the same super rugby squad as Leon Macdonald
Rangi did start playing NPC when he was 17, so was around a long time as a senior player.

@Dan54 Well according to Gifford, who is actually a highly experienced journalist and not a paid troll, this is a breach of protocol and suggests something wrong with the governance of the NZR
It is certainly out of keeping with corporate best practice for a multi-million dollar organisation, and in this case New Zealand’s most powerful brand, not to have board oversight of such a key appointment

His Canterbury/Crusaders articles in the 90s and 2000s were an absolute embarrassment though.
I like Gifford on the radio though. Him and Simon Barnett were good value when I had a work car that didn’t go past 90fm on the dial.

Yeah him and Foster woulda been the first fives in the chiefs squad back in 1996.

@Machpants “ It maybe that Foster is rated well by the players, but that doesn't mean he is any good”
This several times over - why is anyone surprised that undroppable players rate the guy who refuses to drop them?
Hammett was rated highly by the Canes players. I think players loving their coach too much is a red flag.

Understand that mate, all I saying is it's been done same way , and Gifford I bet would never point out a time it's been different, anywhare in world. I not saying they got it right, only it's perhaps a bit of careful recalling by Gifford. I know of people who have gone for top jobs in Engineering etc in huge companies, and are not interviewed by engineers etc. And Samr with almost any appointment anywhere, especially in sport.

So if senior players are not asked their opinion, who should be? I actually think most senior players do recognise good coaching etc, most Crusaders players seem to like Razor, does that raise a red flag?

This saga shows how bloody hard it is to change a structure where the top tier needs changing
NZR/Head Coach/Assistants/AB Captain/AB Players
Pure speculation, but the best person to sort this out would be Whitelock. Ask him who do you want to run the show. He knows it all, been in a successful environment with Crusaders for years. Knows what works. Totally unfair on Whitelock of course. The situation is a mess.
Well Whitelock would of been in senior players group who do these reviews, That's how it has worked for last 15 odd years at least that I know of. I don't think we realise how much say they have, they actually meeting from about Feb/March each year and working with coaches etc. Well before any team is named etc.

@Dan54 my comment was tongue in cheek mate

@No-Quarter Lol yep mate, but still had a bit of sense about it!!!

Like or respect?
Like being coached by, or like him as a person?
I respect my boss greatly. The previous boss was much more likeable, personally, but nowhere near as good to work for.

Well that's not strictly true, he wasn't well liked by the ones who left (or a few of the young ones coming through). But agree that players liking coach too much can sometimes be a red flag. I'm sure Prinsep and Blackwell love Holland.

@MrDenmore Hansen should have resigned after the 2016 EOYT. He lead the decline of AB rugby and its steadily since.
