I was initally responding to Higgins actually, but you can't have a debate without the whole Hawkes Bay mafia joining in. Look, you guys bring tribalism into almost every discussion but anyway let's stay on topic. It's a little disapointing when the only intitial response to the Brad Shields potential signing is his handling, and the questioning whether it's positive or not. Really? He was a machine for the Hurricanes and was a big part of their success in 2016. Having a player like that back at the club can only be a good thing. Who gives a flying F if a young player doesn't get as many minutes, Shields has proven himself and if he can get back to his best, he would be one of the first on the selection sheet each week. BRING BACK BRAD.

He’s at Perpignan because his English club went into administration, otherwise he would probably still be there. It’s probably more a case of Shields not wanting to finish his career out at a shit French club.
He’s only 31, we should be celebrating the fact such a quality player wants to return to NZ with three good years still left in him.
Yes he doesn’t have the best of hands, but physically he was one of the top blindside flankers in New Zealand before he left. He will bring some much needed steal back to the Hurricanes next year.
If he does sign I hope he plays for Wellington in the NPC.
You are overlooking they were not shit enough for him to accept their money when he had very little other options. By the way Perpignan have won four of their last five Top 14 games so perhaps their "shitness" (your words) is in the process of becoming something in the past.

Shields is an upgrade to any 6 we have atm and he’s proven that over the 100+ games he’s played for the Canes. Having him at 6, Lakai at 7 and Flanders at 8 would be pretty bloody decent when taking into account Ardie’s departure next season.
I only see the Shields signing as a positive tbh even though you obviously think he’s passed it.

You were only too quick to describe that their apparent shittness was the reason why you thought he might be thinking of coming over to NZ. That statement cannot go unchallenged, particularly as they threw him a lifeline when he was unemployed..

Maybe after slogging it out for over 100 games for the Canes you may have had a little more respect for a player like Shields. I should have known better though, you Hawkes Bay lot don't take much notice of anyone that doesn't come from your area.
The funny thing is he's better than any 6 that's come out of the Hawkes Bay in the last couple decades so whether you guys like it or not, I'm pretty sure he's going to be back playing for the Wellington Hurricanes in no time.

Touching on your comments on respect for Shields, can I request that you do likewise to James Blackwell who has “slogged it out” for over 60 games for the Hurricanes before pointing the finger to others.
You may not be able to accept this but people from Hawkes Bay do actually take notice (sometimes good and sometimes not so good) of anyone that doesn't come from our area. You are effectively denying that people like @stargazer ever expresses appreciation and acknowledgement of the skills and ability of young players from all over the country. Complete and utter nonsense and one that probably deserves an apology from you to him for that.
Finally you do not even know the name of your team, they are the Hurricanes, not the Wellington Hurricanes as described by you. -

Only Higgins and I responded to it. Don't exaggerate. And we had two very different reactions, too.
We are also entitled to a different opinion to yours and express that opinion.
We didn't bring tribalism into it. You did, and you do that regularly when we don't agree with you.
Shields was good on defence; on attack he had serious issues with quite a high number of handling errors (especially knock-ons). We are allowed to be concerned about that, as well as about the future talent in the squad beyond 2024. You may not give a flying F about that, but I do. I want the young Canes that take over, when the old ones move on, to have enough experience to carry the team further upwards; not back down because they haven't played enough in the years before. You don't have to agree with me. Just stop the tribal mudslinging that is irrelevant to the current discussion. -

Good thing you're not living in Aussie, they refer to the Hurricanes as Wellington in almost every broadcast. It's like us as Kiwis calling the Reds the Queensland Reds, or the Brumbies, the ACT Brumbies, even when there are obviously other provinces or areas involved. Just the way it is unfortunately.

It's like us as Kiwis calling the Reds the Queensland Reds, or the Brumbies, the ACT Brumbies, even when there are obviously other provinces or areas involved. Just the way it is unfortunately.

It’s just the way it is.
It’s the same as if I say the Yankees or the Lakers, almost instantly you’ll know what city I’m referring to.

The fact that the Hurricanes have been referred to as Wellington on more than two occasions already this year probably suggests most people wouldn’t know the difference. I don’t blame them either really when the Hurricanes were referred to as the Wellington Hurricanes for so long. At the end of the day that’s what most people view them as.

Brad being 31 is a little different to Heinz who is 35.
If Brad was coming back at 35 I would be against it, but the signing only has upside to me due to his experience and the fact he knows what it takes to win a title.
They've also only signed him for 2024 so if he comes back and doesn't perform then the Canes have the option of moving on.

Honestly confused by those anti this signing. He's 31 ffs.
We have a very young group of loosies, and one absolutely plodder. Swapping the plodder for Shields is a great move (I assume that's what will happen).
Not sure how easy it is to find but would be good to know which of our loosies are off contract end of this season.
