@Canes4life I don't need an apology. I'm okay with you getting defensive over a Wellington player, just like I'm defensive when I disagree with comments on Hawke's Bay players. Good thing you're not living in Aussie, they refer to the Hurricanes as Wellington in almost every broadcast. It's like us as Kiwis calling the Reds the Queensland Reds, or the Brumbies, the ACT Brumbies, even when there are obviously other provinces or areas involved. Just the way it is unfortunately.
That' because they are the ACT Brumbies. According to their website when they are releasing their team to play they are referred to as the ACT Brumbies. https://brumbies.rugby/

Let’s be honest here. The Canes are always going to be loosely referred to as the Wellington Hurricanes. I mean how many people still refer to the Crusaders as Canterbury or the Blues as Auckland? It’s just the way it is.
It’s the same as if I say the Yankees or the Lakers, almost instantly you’ll know what city I’m referring to.

The fact that the Hurricanes have been referred to as Wellington on more than two occasions already this year probably suggests most people wouldn’t know the difference. I don’t blame them either really when the Hurricanes were referred to as the Wellington Hurricanes for so long. At the end of the day that’s what most people view them as.

@Canes4life The NZ franchises dropped the names of their provincial bases from their names after the 1999 or 2000 season, so they didn't actually use them for very long.

That doesn’t change the fact that if you asked most people where the Canes are from, they would probably say Welly.

Brad being 31 is a little different to Heinz who is 35.
If Brad was coming back at 35 I would be against it, but the signing only has upside to me due to his experience and the fact he knows what it takes to win a title.
They've also only signed him for 2024 so if he comes back and doesn't perform then the Canes have the option of moving on.

Honestly confused by those anti this signing. He's 31 ffs.
We have a very young group of loosies, and one absolutely plodder. Swapping the plodder for Shields is a great move (I assume that's what will happen).
Not sure how easy it is to find but would be good to know which of our loosies are off contract end of this season.

He might have been an almost "ever present" in the winning season but looking through the team there were plenty of players that might have had slightly more input into winning the championship than he did. -

He might have been an almost "ever present" in the winning season but looking through the team there were plenty of players that might have had slightly more input into winning the championship than he did.It's called a team sport, yes there may have been more influential players i.e. Barrett, but Shields was a massive part of our defense and brought that steel required to get the Canes over the line.
Maybe embrace the fact we are getting an experienced player back in the environment instead of poking holes in every little detail.
We need as much experience as possible considering we are losing Coles and Ardie next year.

I know right, only because he's from Wellington aye. You wouldn't be getting this push back if Shields was from Hawkes Bay.

Wonder who the captain will be next year. Shields might be one option. Blackwell another though I hope not . Barrett another. Kirifi another although he doesn't seem to be rated as captaincy material by the Canes coaches. Maybe co-captains. Kirifi and Barrett
