‘Did not breach the red card threshold’
Following the match, Savea was cited under Law 9.27, which states, ‘A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship.’
While the citing commissioner ruled that Savea’s actions met the red card threshold, the SANZAAR Judicial Committee did not agree.
In a statement released by the organising body of Super Rugby Pacific, Judicial Committee Chairman Nigel Hampton KC ruled the following: “Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the Judicial Committee found the foul play did not breach the red card threshold.”
“With respect to sanction, the Judicial Committee deemed the act of foul play merited a warning as it was close to, but did not breach, the red card threshold.
The second hearing
However, the Judicial Committee did issue Savea with a warning. Because Savea had been yellow-carded in the same match, his warning essentially upgraded his yellow card to a red card.
SANZAAR Disciplinary Rule 6.1 states: ‘If a Player has received two Warnings or a combination of a Warning and a yellow card during a Match, he shall be treated for disciplinary purposes as if he had been sent off.’
This meant that the player had to reappear before the Committee members.
Nigel Hampton KC’s findings of the second hearing are as follows: “The Foul Play Review Committee conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, and oral submissions from his legal representative, Mr Aaron Lloyd.
“With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee ruled, after considering a number of factors, including the guidance of World Rugby Regulation 17 Appendix 4, and due to the nature of the player’s persistent offending, with both the yellow card and the warning being issued for unsportsmanlike play, that an appropriate sanction for the player would be a suspension of one week.”
Savea will now miss the Hurricanes’ clash against the Blues but will be available for the following weekend’s game against the Waratahs. -
Article is all over the place. But section on Numia. I haven't seen the game yet but Numia was excellent last year in the NPC. He often played for the full 80 or close to.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/300824033/mark-reason-forget-the-ardie-savea-furore--here-are-my-two-unsung-sporting-heroes
Here’s the real Xavier, the guy in the gold No 1 shirt. In the first scrum of the match against the Rebels, Numia fired the tighthead out the top. He was a big part of holding up an early Rebels lineout drive. Then he drove at the Rebels line and got an offload out to his halfback who scored. But it was called back because the ref obstructed the defence. No matter, Numia again stands up the Rebels at the consequent scrum and Savea gets over for a score. We don’t really know if Savea did get over for a score, but the ref asked him and Savea said ‘yeah, bro’, or words to that effect, so it was an ‘onfield try’. That’s the world of the superhero for you. Special privileges.
Numia kept grinding away during the half, doing his thing. He gave away a scrum penalty that wasn't entirely his fault because the No 9 daftly put the ball in when the front row had already gone down. And Numia was also pinged for obstructing the Rebels cleaners. It was a ludicrous ruling because he had assisted in a tackle and had then been swept away by the follow-up. But that’s what happens to the little guys. They get picked on when it comes to the petty decisions.
And that was it, or so we thought. The Hurricanes replaced their loosehead and hooker at half-time. Bring on the bomb squad. Only the bomb squad bombed. We were scarcely two minutes into the second half when the replacement loosehead was sent from the pitch for a dangerous clean-out. And so Numia had to come back on and go the distance.
And I sing of arms and the man. The Rebels broke out 50 metres, Billy Proctor made a cover tackle and Salesi Rayasi got back to help counter ruck. Then who shows up to complete the job? The first forward on the scene is a prop. The guy can motor. Numia drives over and gets the ball back.
“How did they get back? And how did they turn that?” asked the commentary.
The unnamed, unseen hero, that’s how. Numia then drives and picks and goes again and creates the space for Jamie Booth to dart through and for Rayasi to do his Superman dive in the corner. Minutes later the Canes are stretched on the outside and it is Numia who gets across like a flanker to cut down the threat just short of the line.
A ball pops out, he grabs it and kicks it elegantly downfield. We’re in the dying minutes and Numia is the lead chaser of Jordie Barrett’s kick and throws himself at the charge down. He doesn’t make it but what an example to set the team. The last scrum of the match has to stay solid. Numia doesn’t move. The ball is kicked out and no one sees the unsung hero barely able to stand any longer.

Where is that side? Do you mind posting?
That’s interesting as he was with the Hurricanes during pre season. Maybe down there on loan.

@Canes4life I'll see if I can find it. Think it was on the highlanders page

@BerhamporeNinja I've already posted it in the Highlanders 2023 thread.

Hurricanes Hunters and Blues Dev have drawn 33 all.

Very short write-up on the Club Rugby website:
In the second match at Rugby League Park, the Hurricanes Hunters As and the Blues As drew 33-33.
The Hunters bounced back from their 47-14 loss to their Cusaders teammates last week with a much more assured performance.
Scoring was tit-for-tat throughout, but when right wing Dan Sinkinson injected himself into the backline following a penalty and lineout drive in the corner to score on the far side the Hurricanes led 19-12 at halftime.
The Blues replied with a try to halfback Lisati Milo-Harris to make it 19-19, Hurricanes fullback Ezra Malo scored next to put his side ahead 26-19, the Blues replied off a lineout to hooker Soane Vikena to see it go to 26-26, hometown No. 8 Sione Halililo scored off a scrum to see the Hurricanes go 33-26 up, while the Blues scored the equaliser through replacement Tamaru McGahan with just a couple of minutes to play.
There was high drama on fulltime, with the Blues breaking out through second five and first half try-scorer Corey Evans. He fed his outside support runner with the tryline beckoning but the pass was dropped and the Hurricanes held on for a draw. -
Aumua, 25, re-signed with New Zealand Rugby through to the end of 2025. Hope he makes the RWC squad. But if he does it would be at Coles expense most likely except for injuries

@Stargazer I rrally pleased he resigned, I have been an unabashed fan since I first saw him when he came back, mainly because I saw how straight his back in when scrummaging. I still look to that in props as I truly believe that's haw you get the best power from your second row coming through where it counts.

Article on Cameron and Roigard. Need more games for Cameron to talk about a future AB. But Roigard for sure. Looks very impressive and improving week by week. Someone claimed his defense needs to improve. I'm unsure about this but hopefully both front up in this area.

He's already capped as an AB. Ironically a far better player now than back then.
I know, But every post I read about him said he was not up to much. And I had yet to see him play (But so far very impressed)
Hes not the tallest player or biggest player but should cope at this level. Will watch closely to see what his defense is like but haven't seen any bad misses yet. Hope he's not like Gopperth that use to wave players through. Morgan is smaller but defends well.
