QF Brumbies vs Hurricanes
-
Contrasting team selections with the Canes picking a smaller loose trio and the Brumbies going for basically 3 x 2m plus locks at 4,5 and 6 along with a 2.06m Lock on a six forwards/ 2 backs bench. Lineouts and resulting mauls are the biggest threats to the Canes chances (and how well Perenara stands up to White niggling/disrupting him). I see them trying to run the Brums around avoiding as many full lineouts as possible, using quick throws, short lineouts or keeping the ball in play. Statistically the Canes have the most effective all-round attack in the comp so it should be a fun contrast in styles. As long as they can win enough ball and avoid giving away field position penalties. They also have equal top tries for (64), 9 more than the Brumbies. The Canberra weather forecast is for evening showers and as low as 6 degrees.

@Canes4life Sullivan over Proctor would seem a no brainer to anyone, even stranger that he hasn't made the bench. Got to be unavailable.
Still, nice to not have pages of Prinsep moaning, even Blackwell has been given a pass...
Not quite. Probable last game of the season and not in the matchday 23 then spare a thought for the unlucky sods that he must surely be turning out for in club rugby this weekend!

Sullivan must be injured ? ...is Scrafton injured too ? we needed another power lock like him along side Walker-Leawere.
Gibson's too small for blindside, also having him there we lack some lineout height - would've had Iose at 6, the bloke has looked very impressive... bench looks pretty strong, unfortunately can only have 3 backs in the reserves, need 5 forwards there as they're the one's that do all the hard yakka.
You did see who is playing number 8 for the Canes, you know, that tall fella from Rongotai College…
@Daffy-Jaffy on the conditions, it will be freezing and dewy out there at Bruce stadium. I imagine there will be lots of kicking and Jordie playing at 1st receiver quite a bit.

Yeah, A.Savea isn't that tall, which is why we needed a taller bloke at 6 instead of Gibson... talking about A.Savea, the bloke is amazingly strong, he consistently powers through tackles with his leg drives more than any other number 8 in the comp.

Christ, that's bloody cold... I remember the Crusaders playing in a final against the Brumbies in the snow in Canberra.

Always made me laugh when Auusies used to say when they were in NZ our teams had adavntage because of weather, and then you think christ Melbourne and Canberra can make most of NZ weather seem quite balmy!!

It is at 0740 FFS.
Canberra is at almost 600m in altitude and has big temperature shifts in the shoulder months. I remember -9 mornings that were 24 by early afternoon.
I will concede though that a cold morning usually means a cold evening. Out at Bruce the real killer is a breeze whipping through the open ends of the stadium.
A team from Welly and Palmy should be able to cope. -

Hurricanes media release:
Unavailable for selection: Devan Flanders, Pepesana Patafilo, Dominic Bird, Tyler Laubscher, Bailyn Sullivan
TK Howden or Delany should be starting at 6, there's no size or height in the loose combo, Savea, Kirifi, Gibson are all sub 103kg & 187cm. I'd have 115kg Delany at 6, opening up a place for Sangster on the bench. Gibson or Kirifi out of the 23 altogether. The Brumbies are going to eat this lightweight Hurricanes pack alive.

Day two of winter. This place is a miserable shithole, i.e. worse than normal, for at least the next five months.

@kiwi_expat 100% correct. I think Sangster and Howden not being in that 23 is a bit disappointing, they've been very solid over the last 5 or so weeks.
Knowing that it's going to be pretty shitty, you'd think a bigger pack would make a lot more sense.
-
According to Wellington Rugby's 2021 media guide James Blackwell is a whopping 114kg which wouldn't make him quite a lightweight as Kiwi-expat described, yet the Canes site lists him as only 107kg?
Can any Hurricanes fan inform us of which weight is actually accurate?
-
@Asterik6 the Hurricanes aren’t very good at updating player details etc. I think he was 107kg when he first came on the scene so that heavier weight is probably accurate. I’ve also seen him at 1.95m, not 1.90 which is probably more accurate aswell.

Most sites list him at 1.90. That seems about right to me. The Cnaes are now terrible at keeping their site up to date. A number of players have no weight and height stats. Annoying and its just one indication of a lack of management and board quality at the Canes
-
@cgrant who knows, the Wellington Lions site has him at 1.97m, 122kg. That is definitely bonkers.
I'm going to look closely on Saturday because I don't think he's shorter than Lomax. I don't think he's 1.90m because I'm 1.89m and he's definitely a good 4 cm's taller than I am when I watched him play for Petone a couple years back. Let's say 1.93m and be done with it. Still too short for a Super Rugby lock IMO.
