@mariner4life over the last few world cups pool play has become more and more boring as it always seems to be the same teams and the same outcomes.
SA and Ireland downvote this
England 2015 too.

Unfortunately the knock out stages is only when it gets interesting.
fuck dry powder.
There is no jeopardy. All the good teams don't have to qualify to make the tournament. All the good teams know they are going to make the quarters.
2015 had the best pool of any world cup i can remember. and people hated it! thought it was ridiculous.
maximising TV ratings is bad for sport. The tournament would be way better if nearly everyone had to qualify (and makes Tier 1 teams go away and play tier 2 and 3 teams), and if seeding was fucked off.

this is why i'd like to see more qualification, everyone except the hosts and the current champs, give tier two/three more games against the top team, hard for them to build when the only time they play the top teams is when it really counts

Exactly! Autumn internationals should be rwc qualifiers.
Islands, North snd South America, Eastern Europe. Do it properly.

and a low key way for tier 1 teams to have to find time in the three year qualification cycle to play some lower tier teams at away. spread them out so not to be a financial drain

puts more meaning on other tests instead of 'friendlies'
Rugby does it what 30 months out? How far out will Soccer WC be done?
-
@taniwharugby 100%, rather than thinking up more and more new competitions....let just expand the meaning of the one we have

Ireland will be touring NZ in 2022 and will play us 3 times. Good that we will be playing some lead up games against our potential QF opponents.
And neither team will show too much because the RWC is the very next year.
But we will still hear about “strongest teams selected” “send a strong message” blah blah. The media will play it up that whoever loses will be be on the back foot heading in to the RWC, when in all reality it means very very little

So the biggest name (despite not being #1 anymore) gets drawn with the hosts twice in a row...
What? Japan were the hosts last year.

What an unfortunate draw for so many. Looks a bit lopsided if knockouts progress how I believe they do. Hopefully we can lose the opening match to France and get an easier path to the final.
It seems crazy to make a draw based on form and rankings from over 3 years before the event unless it is a publicity stunt to get media and fans all worked up as early as possible. But when you invite in a fashion designer a ballerina and a chef to make the draw it goes with the territory I guess. -
