Taylor is probably still number 2 number 2. That’s six.

I still like Coles. Taylor was dogshit at test level last year.

Fair, but Coles is injured.
Either way, he still makes the squad.

As long as Bridge isn't there then it's fine.
Should have been a poll option, really.... I mean, given the history of The Fern.

Has @shark voted yet ?
Probably trying to work out which crusaders to leave out of the 23

Based on fitness and form:
Like anyone sane Whitelock, Jordan and Reece start. Taylor, Mounga, Barrett on the bench.
Actually Moody as well because I'm unconvinced about the depth at loosehead. So I guess that makes seven.
-
First test against Ireland - I reckon Fozzie will be conservative and go with what he knows. I'd expect something like...
Moody, Taylor, Tuúngafasi, Whitelock, Retallick, Blackadder, Cane, Savea
Smith, Barrett, Reece, Havili, Ioane, Jordan, BarrettBower, Taukeiáho, Laulala, Barrett, PapaliÃ, Christie, Moúnga, Tupaea.
Which would be 10.
I'd say Bower is least likely to be there, but he's as likely as any other option. If Jordie is 2nd five Havili might miss out altogether.
I don't really know what they're thinking at 6, but Blackadder was ahead of anyone except possibly Akira last year..
Jack Goodhue is also floating about unmentioned.
-
4 (Whitelock, Moody, Jordan, Richie)
Moody, ST, Ofa, Brodie, Sam, Ioane, Dalton, PGS, Smith, Barrett, Clarke, TUG, Ioane, Jordan, Barrett.
Reserves: DeGroot, Coles, Lomax, Va'ai, Ardie, Fakatava, Mo'unga, ALB.
-
@kiwi_expat yes would be great to see Fakatava get the call up! sure Finlay Christie goes great guns for the blues but with Christie not getting off the bench at all in the Ireland test & then last hr flying Aaron over for the France test makes me wonder why not show abit of faith in Finlay on tour
-

Well whatever they did, worked (for Christie). So can't really fault them for that.

6 of 23 sounds about right.
Not nitpicking but who is your backup hooker, and other lock(s) ?
I.E., I'm thinking Taylor at 16 (> Aumua, and Coles injured), and Barrett (or are you assuming the latter is suspended, a liability, or not as good as Lord/Vaa'i?)
-
Coles
Lord and Vaa'i
-
@mariner4life said in How many Crusaders in your AB 23?:
Coles
Lord and Vaa'i
Given Coles is injured "right now" (@Duluth 's original criteria), and given I agree your opinion on Taylor's form, would you leave him out for Aumua?
And am interested in whether you're picking the young'uns over Retallick, or if he is in the Coles basket?

And Whitelock on current form? Is he the lock her used to be? Genuine question, not sure how many minutes he's played this year, or how good he's been

I’d have Jordan, Moody, Reece, Mo’unga, Whitelock and Taylor starting.
Mounga can't defend and Samisoni is better than Taylor.
-
Only Jordan and Whitelock in the starting 15. Newell (time to develop a new TH), Mounga, Barrett and Taylor on the bench.
-
@old-samurai-jack said in How many Crusaders in your AB 23?:
Moody
Taylor (bench)
Whitelock
Barrett (bench)
Blackadder (bench)
Mounga (bench)
Havili (bench or starter if JB fullback)
Jordan
Reece- maybe too early in the season to be sure yet but Newell and LF thereabouts
Pretty well agree, but don't quite know where Newell comes into picture.

Despite his defensive issues, it’s his kicking game that we need. Field kicking is far more important in test footy and even though I am a massive fan of Barrett’s, he is far too erratic in that.
Taylor starting is because Coles is out. Sami definitely in the 23.
-
Starters - Moody, Whitelock, Reece, Jordan
Bench - Taylor, S Barrett, Mo'ungaI might be tempted to use LF as the impact winger/centre.

Why start Taylor ahead of Samisoni?
-
Starters - Jordan,Reece,Liecester F,Whitelock,Moodey To start
Bench - Taylor,Mounga,S Barrett,Blackadder -
I don't get the love for Blackadder. Sure he's busy, but Papalii is the same but more accurate.
They will start Cane and Savea for certain. Then someone big to carry the ball, so Ioane or Sotutu. Papalii and Barrett as reserves.
Starting Cane, Savea and Blackadder would be ... interesting. But not in a good way.

I think we start from the position that the starter is the best player. Not sure that is the case any more.
If Taylor and ST are the two hookers selected I tend to think that you'd get greater benefit/impact from ST off the bench rather than the other way around. Let CT do the donkey work, and unleash ST on the last 30-35.
-
@booboo We need to stop chasing games, and make better starts. Last year we were too often well down when the reserves came on. Best players to start, especially if they are front-rowers who have more power in the clean and when carrying.
-
@Tim if ST is the best 2, start him, if CT offers nothing off the bench, we need to be looking at another 2 that can make an impact off the bench.
-
Coles and Samoni are more effective than Taylor at test level. Offer a lot more physicality and are superior defensively. I'd even have Aumua/Makalio ahead of Taylor.
-
I'm amazed no one's yet included Reuben Thorne in their 23. Red n' black, one-eyed loyalty ain't what it used to be.

I think Taylor could be excellent off the bench, there's no doubt he's quick, abrasive and skilful - could also be excellent for his discipline knowing he doesn't have to play as long so can work harder on getting inside, rolling away and staying on his feet at the breakdown....

Personally speaking - and I love me some Sam Cane - I think Paps is close to putting Cane on the bench.
He'll be the AB captain at some point as well.
-
@gt12 Paps has improved his carrying and linking games this year, but could still improve his jackling, and his ability to play to the ref over the ball.
He is pushing Cane hard though. If he plays six then we need a lineout option at 8 who is also a power player.
-
@Tim I think maybe similar to McCaw, Cane and Papa don't need to stand out so much with jackals as they do so much more defensively to help create more for others. Anyway, haven't seen stats but I feel like he's been performing well there! I'd have him ahead of Cane (how awesome would it be having Cane on the bench).
By the way, virtual likes to you and @gt12 as I've hit my limit of 20 it seems

Should be unlimited again now (it was a new setting and it defaulted to 20)
-
If names and captain's titles were taken out, Dalton would be the first on the starting 15 players' list. He is big and abrasive enough to play 6 but that would mean a complete shuffle in the loosie trio, wouldn't it? You would need Akira or Sotutu at 8, right? Sotutu has been bloody impressive in the last 2 games. Even runs like Mexted (favorite player as a kid) with the ball.
Savea, Dalton, & Cane - all deserving a start but three no.7s................ -
@Bones I think he still has plenty to offer, but think it is likely from the bench now.
-
Sparky's 23 to play Ireland
Moody, ST, Ofa T, Whitelock, Retallick, A.Ioane, Papalii, A. Savea, Smith, B.Barrett, Clarke, J.Barrett, R. Ioane, Reece, Jordan
Bench: Coles or Taylor, Hodgman, Laulala, S Barrett, Cane or Sotutu, Fakatava, Gatland, Tupaea
