Absolute garbage by the Canes{or is it Horrorcanes} especially against a side we should beat easily... we had most of the possession & territory, dominated the scrums, but made too many silly mistakes, also our ball carriers got isolated a lot at the breakdown gifting them the bloody ball.
Prinsep proved yet again what a passenger he is... over the years the Canes have had a lot of useless head coaches appointed to the franchise, the only good one that I can remember would be Boyd.
Well he can't have been much good when he coached Wellington to relegation in the NPC.
Pretty sure it was Earl Va'a that coached Wgtn to relegation... in the first two years that Boyd coached the Canes we got to the final twice, winning the 2nd one, also on both of those occasions we were the top qualifiers.

@nzbloke Wellington were relegated under Mr. Boyd's stewardship in 2014, the year prior to him taking over as head coach at the Hurricanes. he certainly did not endear himself much to Lions supporters that year with his 90 percent losing record nor the -167 points differential. That was helped no end by spectacular thumpings from Northland (05 - 35) and the Tana Umaga coached Counties (07 - 55)
Earl Va'a took over in 2015 and failed to beat Hawkes Bay in either of the two games played between the sides that season and were thus consigned to a another season in the Championship Division. The 2015 season proved to the only one he held the coaching reigns at the Lions. Think he traded that role in for the 1st XV Coaching job at Scots College but my memory is a bit hazy on the time of that.

Wow! That is the dumbest rugby I have seen from a NZ team for a while! Kind of encapsulated all of the problems of NZ rugby in one game. But well done to PM. Awesome stuff!

@machpants I was talking about MP having a long week, and thought you were backing them? Haha
I think the Canes will win this one comfortably.
There’s always one…
A much sharper performance from Moana. Defensively better alignment and took what limited opportunities they had in attack.
Thought Lilo ran the cutter well for Moana. Much better option than that HB fella.
Congrats to Mauger and the coaches on their first W

I was pretty disparaging of MP on the MP vs Chiefs thread last week, and don't take any of that back. Which speaks volumes for this truly pitiful Hurricanes performance. I didn't make it past halftime but in the opening 40 there was plenty to suggest this result, including the Canes' inability to capitalise on numerical advantages, blown scoring opportunities, and a couple of regulation Jordie Barrett bungles. Crikey, just when I think I'm ok with him as the AB fullback he re-appears with another fucking ridiculous haircut and goes and misses touch for shits and giggles. That spot has to be Will Jordan's to lose now.

I don’t think for a second that MP can beat the Blues on Tuesday but they have done a great job at strumming up support last night.
I hope they get a huge vocal crowd. That will encourage them a bit more.
Blues camp won’t be stoked at having a quick turnaround against them

Zero to do with the defensive effort by MP? The continual hard hits behind the advantage line? The determination when their line was under threat?
Or that the Canes managed one of the tries of the tournament when MP wavered from that focus? -

Haven't MP said they not letting crowd into their games until after next week, worried about covid and Island community? If so I hope they revisit decision, as they could well have a great crowd.

Ok maybe the Canes werent on top of game, but MP in second half played well. Just a note to other teams, don't take these buggers too lightly, with a win under belts they may start believing, and when they believe in themselves they will stop the dumb penalties etc and be a dangerous team to play!

Cooper wasn't too bad but not good enough to win it. Boyd managed to win it so must rate as a good coach but the only reason I was happy with him is he had Plumtree as an assistant
This coaching group is quite hopeless. Its a concern as we could lose our better players. Esp our fullback (thankfully it never happened this year with Ardie and Jordie staying on) . And will find it hard to recruit high quality players if Holland is kept on
Its not the coaches to blame though its a completely useless board that has low standards. Look at the difference at the Blues now. And Chiefs understand the importance of a strong coaching team with good player recuitment

@arhs though all 3 locks were good , that was a good shift from Slade and Poloniati who played the whole game and McRobbie showed some real mobility especially when that winning try was scored ..the same can’t be said about Salesi Rayasi who just looked casual running back in a situation that needed full on desperation.
I am still staggered that MP have beaten a NZ team in their first year and in only their 3rd game , how many years were OZ teams beaten by NZ teams .?
For me one of the big issues when we have seen pacific island teams come together especially internationally is the lack of time together meeting on a weekend and then playing a full test the following weekend does not cut it , it just goes to show a bit of time together getting to know each other and more importantly bonding as a group and getting everyday professional training can carry you a long way . -

You may be right/ Time will tell

In a way the game showcased many of the problems that we face at a national level. When the Canes weren't allowed to play the way they wanted to they were clueless.
The good sign was that players like JB realised what to do, which was impact at speed, running at gaps up the middle. Pity his teammates didn't follow suit. -

These look to be about the only players you would not want to lose from the current squad
Definites
A. Savea
A. Aumua
J. Sangster
D. Flanders
J. Barrett
P. Umaga-Jensen
B. Sullivan
B. IoseHighly commended
T. Lomax
W. Goosen
P. Rakete-Stones
T.K. Howden
A. MorganJury still out on
R. Love
I. Walker-LeawrereNot considered due to age
D. Coles
O. FranksThe remainder could be replaced in 2023 without causing too many sleepless nights with good competent players not getting a look in elsewhere, up and comers in waiting not quite ready this season or with late bloomers like J. Sangster. That, of course, is subject to the coaching lineup as excellent coaching does seem to attract the better players in a lot of instances.

It was two times in a spell toward the end of the first half when the wind got up. You could see the ball blown back in. The first I could understand (didn't know the ground, caught out by the wind) but to do the same thing not long after was a bit dumb.
Don't make out that he was doing it all game though.I know you'd rather have Jordan at fullback but running down another player to make a case for your pick is silly. Let's wait and see how strongly Jordan states his case.
IMO, from what little we have seen so far Jordan's talents are wasted when he is in the more structured spot. The guy is more an opportunist (and a brilliant one at that) than a creator for others.
Happy for him to be pushing Jordie though.
