@majorrage Larkham in my top 5 definitely but behind Carter, Ella and Wilkinson.
Any love for Hugo Porta?
I think some of the earlier 10s may be penalised unfairly for lacking the complete game of later 10s. Someone like Grant Fox was a cold blooded killer at 10. I barely remember him missing goal kicks, his game management was awesome, the guy was a machine in the pocket
If Larkham can be in so many peoples top 5's with his deficiencies being overshadowed by his running and passing then Foxy is definitely in mine. Dude couldn't run to save himself but as an on field general he could move the team around as good as anyone and had a great passing game.
@rotated I don't agree that a 10 has to be a goal kicker, when I first started watching rugby as a youngster the 15 was supposed to be the goal kicker.
If you take someone like BB, he is almost the polar opposite of Foxy. Electric broken field runner, but his game management and goal kicking is a weakness
Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of BB as a 10. But, he may be our greatest ever impact sub as he's an awesome general rugby player.

In a game my life depended on, in terms of NZ 10s, I'd pick DC or Foxy. Merhts in 3 with Carlos just behind

Me too, although I'd probably take 2013/14 Cruden in 3 over Mehrts and Carlos. He was uncommonly good in that unbeaten run to the point we didn't miss a beat when DC was out for long periods of it.

Merhts would be in clear 3rd if he had slotted that DG in 1995. Once in a career big boy moment

Haha true, he had a few shots too IIRC (and I've done my best top block that horror movie). Should have given Zinny a go.

Likewise. At his best Cruden was magnificent.
And it wasn't just for the ABs -- he did it with the Chiefs too.

Often overlooked in these conversations, Phil Bennett.

He suffered both then and now for not being Barry John.

Don't get the hype for Larkham as an all timer. Many of Barrett's weaknesses were Larkham's too. Was he really that much better than other playmaking 10s with wobbly goal kicking and weak defence like Spencer and Honiball?
As a matter of principle a GOAT 10 should be able to goal kick to an above average level.
I do seem to vaguely remember Larkham scything through our defence on a number of occasions- remember back when Australia had the Bledisloe on the odd occasion

Honiball's nickname was "Lem" which translates to "Blade".
This was because of his highly effective defence - basically tackling around the ankles and not missing out on cutting down his target too often.
So I find that take a bit odd.In terms of AB flyhalves - and admitting that different eras are tough to compare - I'd have to rate DC ahead of everyone I've seen with some daylight to the next one.
And I am hard pressed to think of any better in the world.
Certainly Wilkinson and Larkham would feature up there. -
