I only watched the last 15 mins. The ref bottled it by not giving Lawes a YC. As we saw last year the NH refs are soft on deliberate knock-ons.
He reminded me of a student teacher trying to impose his authority on an unruly classroom.
-
England have all the tools to be really good but keep finding new and inventive ways to hamstring themselves.
Plenty of fight from Wales. Cuthbert was really good!
I think Courtney Lawes is my favourite player right now.

For an ex-player, Adamson is a complete fucking peasant when it comes to refereeing.

I think @barbarian said it best after ?Boks v ABs in Townsville? - some of these UK refs have a massive boner for penalising the attacking side at the ruck

Marcus Smith is overrated, need be good at sevens.
I think he's just seen as The Second Coming because he's not boring like many of their 10s. He's got the core skills and ambition to be good, but yeah for now he's talked up far now than he deserves.
How he got MOTM over Cuthbert or itoje I'll never know
-
@nta yeah he's certainly not bad. But all his faffing around just gives defences time to organize. He did make one break, but that's it for all his sideways running and goose steps. He didn't really steer his team at all, their attack was pathetic. Place kicked well enough but otherwise, not that great

England do not look like they can score a try in the backs despite having so much quick, go forward ball
They managed to set up 3 excellent forward runs in a row at one stage - fast rucks and crisp delivery, but it came to nothing once the ball went wide.

He missed a sitter from almost in front. I don't know much about goal kicking, but he tilts the ball to the right on the tee, and misses to the right a bit. 🤷♂️

Smith is without doubt very good but still a work in progress. It doesn’t help that with England his midfield partners and thus game plan are ever changing. The stability he has with his centres for Harlequins allows him a lot more opportunity. Mind you a lot of that is down to Esterhuizen as his bail out option.
But yes, the constant frothing at the mouth from the press and pundits is tiresome - and not yet warranted. Mind you if you watched the France v Scotland game there was a masterclass in bigging up a player on one performance. The Scottish 7 had a good game but I really expected the comms pundit to pop out for a bit of Willising every five minutes.

Tompkins was my Welsh MOTM. Integral to everything good Wales did.
Cuthbert backed up his great performance against Scotland with another last night, and thoroughly justified his selection. However, despite gaining loads of metres when he was brought down it either resulted in turnover ball or a penalty for holding on.
If ever we needed LRZ out there it was yesterday. There was so much space in the last 20 that he would have exploited.
Randall was my MOTM

England score 23 points
5 from a shit line out throw straight to Dombrandt. Great finish though.
3 from Liam Williams flicking the arm. Didn't need to do it. Deserved YC.
3 from Moriarty for not rolling away.
3 from Cuthbert for holding on.
9 from sealing off. Basham the worst culprit. With the exception of the penaltys from Liam Williams and Moriarty, Wales were in possesion and under very little pressure.
It's a wonder we were able to run at the end of the match having shot ourselves in the foot so many times.
-
Not a bad summation though the Liam Williams brain fart did not cough up 3 points. For some bizarre reason we opted to go for a scrum despite it being a complete dogs breakfast thus far. Multiple re-sets and the Sinckler stands up and gets penalised. I was a bit aggrieved at the time as this would have been about the fifth or sixth re-set and I didn't see Adamson giving a firm warning, so seemed a little arbritrary to single out Sinckler. On reflection, yeah not a wrong decision but still feel that could have come sooner. Maybe just that it was the most clear cut?
Anyway the point stands that, even without hindsight, we should have taken the points or gone for the corner. Both were more likely to yield a benefit. Stupid IMO.
-
@catogrande those multiple resets that early in the game would have most referee assessors grinding their teeth. Take fucking control of the situation you tit. You make arbitrary decisions at enough rucks!

Analysis on Scrum 5 on BBC Wales this evening showed Itoje impeding Beard which caused the ball to go through to Dombrandt for England’s only try.
Clever work from Itoje.
Really poor work from the officials, despite Biggar asking for the TMO to have a look

I saw him grinning to his team mates in the post-try slowmo footage, and it was one of those "we got away with that!" looks

i noted a couple of very good Welsh breaks came to nothing because the support play was absolute zero. There were white jerseys everywhere scrambling, and not a red jersey in sight.

lineouts are full of it if you do it right. Have a look at the AB try in the 2011 RWC final, in particular the work of the front pod...

That's 11 year old technology and 'vigilance' though
This one should not have been missed, especially as Beard was penalised for inside arm.

Cuthbert the best line breaker on the day and the worst culprit of running away from support
