Julian Savea looked more comfortable on the wing

In general Julian Savea has a pretty poor work rate, hardly noticed him in the match until Umaga-Jensen slotted into the midfield & Julian Savea moved out to his usual wing position where he improved his work rate a bit.

Sangster & Sullivan have really made the most of their opportunities... Canes are looking very good, even our scrum is fairly stable, hope Holland doesn't continue to stuff the team up too much with some of his strange selections.

Was it knock who just passed the ball straight to a Canes player? WTF was he thinking?

Gift tries like that shouldn't happen... you know the oppositions defence are basically camping in your backline etc, so attacking players have to be far more alert, this shite happens too often, if he had bothered to have a quick look first he wouldn't have passed the ball.

Have to say I like the look of young Sangster, whoever thought to get him down from up north had his thinking cap on. Same as Sullivan, though I will say one game doesn't make a season, but he's started better than I thought.
Who would of thought, perhaps these fella coaching etc do know more than us internet warriors!

@dan54 yeah Sangster has been a great find for the Canes. Does anyone know his weight and height because he looks pretty solid?

Scrafton should be back aswell this week so atleast now we should have a proper lock on the bench.

I'm really intrigued to see the side for this week, surely Holland has realised after Saturday that the likes of Iose, Flanders, Umaga-Jensen and Love should all be starting.

Ah yes, the annual Ardie Savea is amazing because he runs a lot.

A test #8 needs to want to hit rucks, and be effective when he does do it. A #8 also needs to be physical in the tackle.

Test rugby is not won by YouTube highlights.

Should be the first name on the bench. Should not start at 8 if playing a decent calibre pack (therefore can start against Australia).

Obviously you never watched Kieran Read a lot, he didn't hit a lot of rucks, wasn't overly agressive at the tackle, just did all his jobs bloody well as Ardie seem to. Most loosies don't hit rucks whether they 6,7, or 8, they are either the one setting up or usually setting up in attack or defence, watch the 6N test from this weekend and see which 8s do it. Besides all else NZ rugby doesn't have to say 8 does this or that so we should, we should pick players that do a job we want them to do, not what's written in manuals!

Reado became more physical in tackle over his career. BTW anyone notice how much weight he’s los? Bit of a beanpole now.

I noticed that on TV the other day and thought the same thing when.

He looked much more like an ex cricket player than rugby player during the Black Clash recently that’s for sure.

Yeah, Sangster has impressed a lot, he's 115kg... him & Scrafton would be a top locking pair for the Canes.

    just watched the last play.

Honestly, the Blues looked cooked. They were falling off tackles all over the place - RTS was one of many.

I wouldn't panic, looked way more like lack of preseason and condtioning (ie no match fitness) than structural issues.

@nzzp think there are plenty of positives to take from that game, realistically, the Blues should have had more points on the board anyway, putting it beyond reach, but that's way things roll.

    yep,

I'm super annoyed that we lost (but that's normal) - but given the buildup, it gets an asterisk. Ya gotta win them, though.

Much as I a happy Canes man NZZP, I kind of agree, I said it another post I not absolutely we would of won that if it wasn't Blues first game, nothing like having a game or 2 under the belt to get a bit of fitness.

You would think so, but, after all this time I don't hold out hope. We've been here before with Holland. He will occasionally select these guys but never gives them an extended run.

PUJ should be a nailed on starter this season.

If Plummer could fucking kick at a level required at this level, you'd have had just enough in the bank.

Although Plummer has improved a bit, I wondered why Zarn wasn't kicking, I seem to remember him getting the duties last year.

@gt12 Perofeta is a very good goal kicker too. Much better than Plummer.

Just BEHIND right hand post. Look closely and you can see both ends. At level of TACKLE in background.

@pakman I don't think your sense of perspective is quite working. It's more behind the left post than the right.

It bounced off left and went over bar and behind right. The right post obscures ball as it goes behind. That’s a conversion.

@pakman I don't think it went over mate, that camera angle is a little deceptive.
