Foster said they're keen to use Papalii on the blindside, I bet that was Schmidt's idea, not his... Papallii has never had the pace to be a link player at 7, which is a pretty big factor in the ABs playing a fast paced game.

Well as Foster talked about it last year, I not sure where you got that idea from.

Should have dropped McCaw too with all those injuries he used to get. And Papalii? appendicitis! Who the fuck gets that these days? Get rid of him.

Different situation. No-one was challenging McCaw for his AB slot. If Sam's fitness and its impact on the AB captaincy hasn't crossed management's mind, then they are even worse than their detractors claim

Marty Holah was neck and neck with him early on as I recall, through to about 04 or so

Yeah, but Ritchie wasn't captain then.

I see that Foster has acknowledged that Jacobson was unlucky as he has been forced to play in all 3 loose forward positions for the Chiefs. On one hand that demonstrated his versatility, but he hasn't being playing in his preferred positions (6 or 8 ) in recent weeks. If he was at no.8 in Chch, the Chiefs would have got something out of those 1st half 5 m scrums.

PGS needs to play to his physical size because that wasn't the first time he's not scored when over the goal line.

    might wreck his career

Oh come the fuck on. That's not going to happen even if he has a bad game. He's not a fragile little mental patient. He's shown more maturity and composure than Tupaea, yet you don't have the same reservation about him.

I really can't think of any players that have had their careers wrecked recently.

Not too sure what QT has to do with it., but yeah, you right. I shouldn't have used "might wreck his career".

Would have been better if I had said "there's a risk his inexperience might be exploited by Ireland, he gets pulled early, he has a brain-fade which costs us the game, the selectors lose confidence in him and it seriously impacts his confidence & future selection"

    That's better I think.

Papalii at 6, Cane at 7, Savea at 8 = three opensides - what could possibly go wrong?

@Frank Same thing that the Hurricanes tried against the Brumbies. Made it easy to shut down Savea, with no good ball carrying alternatives.

Papalii is larger than your typical openside, and I said months ago I expected him to be used at 6 at some stage. More likely off the bench.

I could live with Dalton at 6, Sotutu at 8 and Cane at 7.

Jack on the bench wouldn't be bad.

Not sure Jack offers anything off the bench.

Yep. 18 tests and 17 as a starter. Start or not in the 23. QT / RTS / LF all offer more as an impact player. And there is options in terms of positional coverage too with those others.

Interestingly on those 17 tests he’s started, he’s partnered with Crotty, SBW, Laumape, ALB and Ioane.

Wasn’t Foster saying Papali’i could cover blindside, not really starting him? Ioane surely has the inside running to start if he keeps on going the way he’s playing.

I have no doubt he could play at blindside, but i think our tactics change a bit if he starts then how we would play if Ioane starts. Quite different players.
