Rugby administrators making a bollocks of their competitions?

I find that extremely hard to believe. 🙂

Anyone know what the actual rule on picking up the ball from inside a ruck is? Do you just need something behind that last foot? Because ruling one out last week and letting it stand this week is a bad look for world rugby.

@Damo @NTA or any other refs?

@broughie On Bridge, yeah, I wouldn't usually have him in my 23, but against a team that likes to put the ball up, I think he may be a good option. As I said, not really a fan of his, but I can understand why if he does get the nod for the boks with De Klerk, Pollard and Le Roux putting a lot of bombs up.

From the most recent Game Management Guidelines:

"At a tackle, a player can pick up the ball as long as one foot is level with or behind the ball. At a ruck, a
player can pick up the ball as long as both feet are level with or behind the ball. If a player is still bound
with an opponent, then they cannot pick up the ball."

So if there is no ruck, one foot. If it's a ruck and you're not bound to an opponent, two feet.

One thing that has impressed me about this coaching staff is the ability to get players to have their error rate lower than Super Rugby.

Samisoni, QT (before he gassed out), Jordie, Akira (didn't play last night but in earlier games), Lomax etc.

A lot more accurate in black.

Partly because the game plan is a bit tighter at this level.
Partly because they're playing alongside higher quality team mates, too.

On Blackadder, at least two of the missed tackles were him shooting out of the line and got a hand on the player, so as far as I am aware that counts as a missed tackle. There was one missed tackle off a kick restart where the Argies got the ball and he actually ran around a team mate and Blackadder got a hand to him but couldn’t tackle. That is counted as a missed tackle.

It reminds me when the odd game Snakey would have a higher than usual missed tackle count because he also was used as a shooter because he read the game so well.

I remember that Richie McCaw often recorded a few missed tackles because he busted his arse to attempt tackles that other players wouldn't have ever gotten to. He would get a finger on an attacker that another player wouldn't have touched. Blackadder makes the same effort and so I expect he'll record similar numbers of missed tackles.

    So, needed up watching delayed

Don’t think there’s anything gone unsaid, in general pretty happy for a b/c team

A little worried TJs pass looked a bit weak, would get to the ball and make the pass fast enough…but then it would loop, or fall short or just be picked up in the bootlaces

Thought savea 7 and sotutu 8 looked very good

I thought I saw vaai doing quite a lot actually, enough to be in the squad at least

Patty t always looks like he’s running in slow mo 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agreed re comments about Blackadder, thought he was everywhere but needs to calm down

Dmac was good as the 3rd choice 10, just needs to learn to take a tackle, there is a middle ground between helter skelter and just shovelling on, run to support and take the tackle and recycle

    Bring on the boks

If your theory were true, we could probably expect that Richie would have slightly worse numbers than the team overall (I.e., because he attempts harder tackles).

There isn't much evidence to suggest that this is true though, even if he did attempt harder tackles, as he was still more successful individually than the team overall.

I went back as far as I could to look at the data for tackles (ESPN), which is 2011, and identified 8 games in which McCaw played in 2011.

He had a few games off when either Thomson or Vito got a run at 7, but from those games, the key data is below:

SA: Made 11, missed none (100%) and team at 96% (86/90)
Australia: Made 16, missed none (100%) and team at 90% (121/135)
    Australia: Made 8, missed 2 (80%) and team at 88% (97/110)

    Tonga: 12 made 1 missed (92%) and team at 98% (88/90)
    France: Made 17, missed 1 (94%) and team at 91% (98/108)
    Argentina: Made 5, missed 2 (71%) and team at 83% (52/63)
    Australia: Made 16, missed 2 (89%) and team at 86% (106/123)
    France: Made 18, missed 2 (90%) and team at 90% (128/142)

For the year, for McCaw that makes 113 attempts, with 103 made (91%) while the team the total attempts were 861, with 776 made (90%).

Personally speaking, I think that if you are trying to compare Blackadder to the greatest player of all time by pointing to potential issues with McCaw’s game, you’ve already lost the argument.

To be fair to George he does seem to get on the end of a few hospital passes at least last night he was frequently taking the ball into contact

Wow, there are some optimists here about Blackadder.

How many players turn their games around, aged 26? It's not like he's come from league or had a series of bad injuries. He missed a lot of tackles and he's going to keep doing that because he doesn't position himself as well as a test player needs to. And that many penalties -- in a team trying to work on their penalty count -- is inexcusable.

When Frizzell first came onto the scene there were an awful lot of "if he does this ... " and "he'll get better with experience" too. At least he was young, and physically imposing.

Are the ABs number 1 again yet? No one is even close.

    Not quite

apparently we are. Sounds like this was a 'home game' for the Argies. It's not great - but there's a fair bit of reporting that we're back to No1.

You'd think this sort of thing would have been clarified by World Rugby or SANZAAAAAAARSE before the game started, eh

I think that would be stupid if true. It's a game played on neutral ground, no matter where it was supposed to be played.

Do we know if last week was considered a home game for us for ratings purposes.

I guess we must have, if this was the same for Argentina. Was a boks home game too, then. Fucking stupid if that's the decision for ranking points

Haha so the Boks play Australia in Australia and World Rugby consider it a home game for the Boks.

I reckon this hasn't been thought through properly. Who cares where the game was originally scheduled to be played 6 months ago

We'll find out on Monday, if we are world 1, then that is what has happened for the rankings If not, WR have at least 2 brain cells to rub together.

Yep... ever since the question first came up last night, and my check of what should happen, compared to what the commentators and media are saying...
I'm looking forward to Monday - to confirm who's actually more incompetent:

    • World Rugby bureaucrats...
    • or commentators/Media.

World Rugby - because this shouldn't be a misundersatnding in the media; should be a clearly communicated outcome that people know.

Also, why the hell don't WR publish interim results as games come through? No rpoblem with the 'official rankings' being weekly on a Monday, but FFS we don't know who the World No 1 is right now. Amateur hour.

Yes we do, South Africa are World Ranked Number 1. And will be until at least luchtime Monday UK time. Weekly updates from WR is pretty fast for them! Lucky it is not sent out yearly by paper mail
