Bring Allen in for one of the seamers. Time for CDG to step up with the ball (and with the bat and in the field, for that matter).
Colin has been poor. The consummate flat track bully
Is he? Really? In what way? T20 is supposed to be a flat track sport.
Seems fairly consistent to me.
When the conditions favour him he can be great. But when it comes time to tough it out, Colin often seems to be found wanting. Of course it is an eyeball observation that may be totally disproved by his match stats
In no version of the sport is Colin ever selected to tough it out with the bat.
On a slow wicket, against quality spinners, with a big boundary - he'll be less effective than normal. Hes an orthodox batsman who hits in the air to orthodox areas of the ground, rather than a gapper. So, unless he comes off, he'll be caught in deep.
I'm no T20 guru, not interested enough. But to be getting franchise T20 contracts all round the world one can assume there is a moneyball type metric that shows a guy who can either hit out or get out from ball one(ish) batting down at 5, 6, 7 is pretty valuable.
His casual demeanor will always frustrate when it doesn't come off, though.
He is not a T20 bowler though, let's get that out of our heads. Probably averages 1 over match through his franchise career.
CDGH ( and the lack of any spinner who is actually international class ) are glaring weaknesses in our team compared to others. Luckily we’re strong everywhere else which is why we’re ranked so high.
I can live with that.
What format?
The one that matters
Well, I'm going to vehemently disagree with half of that statement. CdG has performed his role in the test team excellently , has topped several global metrics for the role he performs. Been a vital part of the team. Meaning the team are constantly applying pressure, and eeking the most out of the collective.
I dont think he should be in the first X1 anymore, though. Jamieson now bowls his overs, meaning his value is far less and team now better off with a spinning allrounder or just a specialist batsman .
But, been far from a glaring weakness.
Relatively speaking compared to the rest of the team, who are brilliant. “Glaring weakness” is probably rough, fair call.
I think he’s a decent player but there are other better all rounders in other teams.
**> Theres only been 2 or 3 better at his role, in the world during his time. Stokes, Holder, and maybe Ashraf from Pakistan is about equalise.
(Not counting spinning allrounders Shakib and Jadeja)**
Yet, there are still parts of his game he does better than those guys the last few years (stats-wise). ER and SR etc. Exactly what the team balance have needed him to bring.
All of them would get picked ahead of CDGH. But as I said I can live with that with the class we have elsewhere.
So, you can live with him only being about top 30th percentile test seam bowling allrounder for most of his time .
Ya know, hes better at his role than Boult, currently. Who would be only about 50th percentile opening bowler. Or Taylor as a number 4 is probably somewhere in bottom 50th percentile.
He's been excellent. But, as I said, his role has been partially subsumed by Jamieson and I dont think he should be in test X1 anymore.
So CDGH is excellent but not worth a spot in the team. Ok, weird flex.
What? We have our best test team ever, just being very good doesn't guarantee a spot. @Rapido has done some good analysis here but you're dying on a weird hill.
Then again, we're on the fern I guess
It’s the fern, even when you’re wrong you’re often right
I'll take that personally, many thanks.
I’ve actually defended CDGH from those who wanted Mitchell or Santner selected ahead of him. Funny how the world works sometimes

Reckon this outfield is mown to even up the fielding differences in the two sides - big ridges everywhere

I think this has to be CdG's last tour. He has done well as a Black Cap but looks like his time is over.
Yep, on this tour his batting is poor, his fielding is average, and if he's not bowling, there's no point.

Patel ripping through the bangbros lineup here. 43-6 in the 9th
-
59-7 after 14. Hard to see them coming back from here.

well done sticking it out to the end.
Winning a game there isn't a bad effort at all - and arguably we should have had a crack at the last one too. Wonder if they had a week on the pitches before the first match how we would have gone

Yeah sorry that was all the analysis I could come up with in the early hours....
Yup I reckon you're right. Don't think we should underestimate the loss of Finn Allen for those first two matches though. Although he got out fairly early, just seeing him playing good, assured cricket shots against the Bangladeshi spinners seemed like it did the rest of our batsmen a world of good. It showed us there was a way to bat sensibly without being too conservative.
All 3 spinners bowled some lovely balls, and deserved everything they got. Have to admit they all got away with almost all of their loose deliveries though. Mushfiqur in particular just couldn't take advantage.
Reckon the last 2 should be much closer, and this makes for a far more interesting series than if our A team had gone over there with some proper prep and smashed em.
