Too many events at the Olympics?

@booboo OK unsynchorised rowing then when you can only stroke on separate sides of the boat each time an oar is used. Might end up a bit like a demolition derby when it comes to trying to keep the boat travelling in a straight line which should be exciting for the crowd!

Yeah you’ve mentioned the Phelps thing before and it doesn’t help your argument. Another ridiculously stupid statement.
As I said last year: Phelps has won a single Olympic gold medal where he alone was the fastest over a distance: 200m freestyle. Paavo Nurmi and Carl Lewis are better Olympians.
If I recall correctly you also said that Bradbury’s achievement was greater than anything Phelps ever did. That’s easily the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on TSF, although the argument that butterfly is equivalent to jogging comes close.
You didn't lose your lollies as much as I expected to that bait. Which surprised me. Butterfly is slower than freestyle over the same distance. So is jogging, Any other analogies I can assist you with?
This has to be a windup. You cant be that stupid.
Great rebuttal. We're done here.
Ok I’ll bite. Bear crawls, hopping on one leg and skipping are slower than running. Ergo they must be jogging right? What awesome logic.
You should probably stop posting if that's your grasp of the topic.
To make this easier for you: Jogging is slower than sprinting. So too is walking. That doesn't mean walking and jogging are the same thing.
That’s exactly what I’m saying. Now apply that to swimming. It’s really not so hard. You can do it.
I’ll make it even easier for you. Butterfly is slower than freestyle. Why? Because it’s a completely different farking stroke. Not because it’s just a slower freestyle. Comparing it to jogging is absolutely absurd.

At the end of the day, I totally get the annoyance at the number of swimming events. The mixed thing today was a pisstake. What annoys me though is ignorant and stupid comments about the different disciplines. You also can’t compare swimming to running.
I suppose we could even apply the “fastest and best” rule to rowing. Why have the different boats and not have only the very fastest ones?
For the record I probably agree with a lot of your culls but I think Decathlon should stay. The ultimate Allrounders and imho doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Although I also get the “jack of all trades master of none” argument as well.
To me the biggest problem people have with swimming isn’t the different strokes it is the similarities of skills meaning that a very good swimmer gets multiple medal chances.
At least with running the events are very different based on distance. Good sprinters in strong countries get multiple chances sure but generally the distances are spread far enough that you specialise.
There appears stuff all difference to a good swimmer between 100 and 200 in various strokes. -

Swimming as an Olympic sport is a joke. The only way to address this is to remove all the slow events, which leaves you with freestroke.
Don't have defined strokes - fastest whatever wins. Set distances sure - 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500. But that's it.
There's no "jogging" 100m race on the track FFS.
Or three legged racing, that seems to die out after primary school for some insane reason

I'm interested in what is a game in the 'spirit' of the games, and based on that, what should be allowed at future games. My working premise was that Olympics was traditionally to test, extend and marvel at humanity's physical and mental toughness, determination, skill and testing of our boundaries, the records themselves are also given at many other events so that is not the primary goal of the Olympics.
But that doesn't explain the inclusion of horse-racing
https://olympics.com/ioc/ancient-olympic-games/the-sports-eventsAnd to say "do whatever you like but finish the fastest" doesn't quite seem in the spirit of the traditional Olympics, to me either.
-
The ancient Olympics were all about older guys hooking up with younger guys, and that’s about it. The competition was, well, you can figure it out. It’s hardly a secret. Just keeping it real. Ask the Greeks. National Geographic covered this in 1996. The horse races were foreplay.

So what's the positive argument for having all four strokes in the Olympics? I'm fairly neutral about it, my general position is that more events good because I get to watch more Olympics, but it's annoying to see Phelps get talked up purely based on medal count when it's clearly easier to win eight medals as a swimmer than it is as a runner. (Phelps is a great, but I see his 8 as equivalent to Bolt's three and probably behind Lewis and Owens doing the long jump/sprint double) You seem to have a pretty strong view that they definitely belong so curious to hear your perspective.
