I've had a 180
why am i arguing against more sports on TV? Fuck it, add another week and put all sorts of shit in. I watched freestyle BMX yesterday and it was fucking cool.
I guess my attitude was clouded by living in Australia, and the nationalistic dick-waving (strange term considering it was the chicks carrying the men) around medal counts based purely on the pool. All this "greatest olympian" bullshit based on medal tallies. medal tallies built because of the number of events they get to enter. And that's, once again, a failing of the media, not of the Olympics.
Swimming pads the stats for the Americans, the Aussies, and the Chinese. I get over that, i get over it all.
So yeah, Bigger! Swollen! More! that's my new motto
One thing I’m assuming the Aus press hasn’t mentioned is that at least 5 of those swimming golds would probably not have happened if Covid had not hit.
yeah, 12 months is a looooong time alright.
Still so impressive from those Aussie women. Great athletes.
Mens 1500 free was pretty cool. 3 guys in it right to the end. Watching them swim that fast for that long blows my mind.
That was an incredible finish. I’d be lucky to clock a 30sec 50m at all let alone do it for 40 odd laps.
The chicks were incredible. Feel sorry for Kyle Chalmers. Poor prick had to try and produce miracles every time. The medley team were very disappointing. Elijah Winnington also went badly to poo. He would have been a dead cert for gold on his qualification times but was a shadow of himself.
that big American was a freak. Fuck racing that guy
i just checked my Garmin. My fastest 1,500m from when i was swimming was 37 minutes!!!!! 2 and a half times slower!!
Actually, that is what i want in my Olympic coverage, augmented reality. Your Garmin stats are fed in to a program that then shows your performance overlayed on the event coverage. So it's 100m time? you go run a hundred, and then you can see yourself "competing" against the athletes.
Imagine how fucking incredible you would find watching the 10,000m if you saw how far you got spat out the back right from the start, and then how many times you got lapped?
In fact, i am off to find a development partner.
That’s a hell of an idea!
I’ve often wondered what motivates some of these European (cough white) runners. They train like demons and make huge sacrifices but must know that they’ll be left for dead in the heats by genetic freaks from the Caribbean.
same in the distance stuff. some tall white guy will smoke along with them for ages and then get burned right the fuck off when the Africans take off.
Yeah that poor Aussie fucker barely stumbled over the line like a drunk. The winner took off like he could do it again. I’m not sure what would motivate you to want to absolutely destroy yourself to maybe finish a valiant 8th. Admirable and gutsy for sure but ultimately completely futile.

like fuck he is these days. Aussie as fuck. Sydney racing royalty.
Aus could send Bowman to cause a massive crash so one of their shitty stayers can Bradbury a gold.
this thread has merits.

We did collect 2 medals for 30 people.

How good were we in women's softball BEFORE it became an Olympic event? World champions good. That's how good.
(and triathalon, although we still quite good)

canoe double, another event that should get the flick...combination of a porn thrust and paddle, my wife thinks its fine..so it must go lol

The ancient Olympics were all about older guys hooking up with younger guys, and that’s about it. The competition was, well, you can figure it out. It’s hardly a secret. Just keeping it real. Ask the Greeks. National Geographic covered this in 1996. The horse races were foreplay.
Zeus was a ladies man.

If anything there’s too few…..this would send ratings through the roof if it made a comeback
Paintball?
This is the sport for the COVID era. Now if you could control the trajectory and scatter of the wax/paint, there could also be a category for aesthetic "impact".
I'm torn between choosing Reservoir Dogs soundtrack or a balletic overture (Clockwork Orange-ish) for the background music though. -

Yeah you’ve mentioned the Phelps thing before and it doesn’t help your argument. Another ridiculously stupid statement.
As I said last year: Phelps has won a single Olympic gold medal where he alone was the fastest over a distance: 200m freestyle. Paavo Nurmi and Carl Lewis are better Olympians.
If I recall correctly you also said that Bradbury’s achievement was greater than anything Phelps ever did. That’s easily the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on TSF, although the argument that butterfly is equivalent to jogging comes close.
You didn't lose your lollies as much as I expected to that bait. Which surprised me. Butterfly is slower than freestyle over the same distance. So is jogging, Any other analogies I can assist you with?
This has to be a windup. You cant be that stupid.
Great rebuttal. We're done here.
Ok I’ll bite. Bear crawls, hopping on one leg and skipping are slower than running. Ergo they must be jogging right? What awesome logic.
You should probably stop posting if that's your grasp of the topic.
To make this easier for you: Jogging is slower than sprinting. So too is walking. That doesn't mean walking and jogging are the same thing.
At the end of the day, I totally get the annoyance at the number of swimming events. The mixed thing today was a pisstake. What annoys me though is ignorant and stupid comments about the different disciplines. You also can’t compare swimming to running.
Probably opening up yesterday's arguments but what is the point of Butterfly? Nobody is going to choose to swim butterfly in any situation other than a swimming carnival.
At least breaststroke and backstroke have a purpose, even though it's not to go fast.
A race in the slowest way to get from one end of the pool to the other isn't logical, especially when you have to apply strict requirements on technique.
WRT athletics, I'd apply the same logic to "walking", but not to hurdles or steeplechase.
I love butterfly but I totally agree. Butterfly is beautiful to watch and insanely difficult but it’s absolutely ridiculous. I say this all the time to my swimming coach. If a boat sinks, survivors (depending on their swimming ability and level of fitness) will use one of freestyle, backstroke or breaststroke to get away. No way is anyone swimming away from a sinking ship doing bloody butterfly.
What if the only way of escaping is to be spotted and abducted by a lovely mermaid?

"Too many events at the Olympics", "Too many sports that require judging", "Too much swimming".
- Are you the host city bill payer?
- Are you unable to reach the remote to change to one of the other 11 Olympic channels?
- Are you the pre-Games scheduler losing sleep trying to fit everything in to 16 days?
Otherwise I don't see a problem with too much sport
-
In short - yes to many events at the Olympics...
In reality - the Olympics will continue to be bloated with more and more sports as the IOC strives to be "modern" read - stuff itself with as much cash as possible from any sport that makes money into it's own coffers...
It might reach a point where it just starts getting too expensive to actually host an Olympics, or impossible to fit in as far as programming/schedule goes. Until then it's just going to "grow".
Till then however we can all look forward to breakdancing taking place at the Paris Olympics...it beat out pole dancing to make it there - I kid you not.

Would make the TV watching interesting though. Can we change to SkySport23 Adult channel to watch the olympics?

Biggest Bomb would be awesome. No style points and judging of manus just how high can you make that splash.
Woodchopping. Although would have to settle on one or two very different discplines to avoid the swimming/gymnastics argument. Maybe just standing chop and double saw?
In the winter Olys we could add in 3,000 metres ice walk in jandals. We'd have huge selection problems from Southland although the trials could be fun.
The one where they climb the pole with the planks is unique enough.

I took the kids for a swim at the outdoor pools in Panmure over summer. Got an outdoor diving pool there and there was a shit ton of bros there doing bombs.
The thing I couldn't get over was how fucking serious they were! The amount of setup and concentration on their faces before each jump was hilarious, followed by technique that had been perfected from a lot of time spent 'training' .
You would have thought there was some sort of event on, but nup just some dudes jumping in the pool to see who could do the biggest splash.
wish I'd videod it but couldn't be fcuked walking all the way back to get my phone.
