Pre broadcast Kristina Sue mentioned Goosen was leaving, so looks like it's confirmed but not officially announced.

Not sure where he's going but definitely a loss. Can't remember him ever having a bad game.

Hope he's around for a final NPC season.

On another note, Sue actually asked Holland if he knows what his best 15 is since he keeps changing the team weekly. Was nice to hear a good question for a change!

Resting ABs completely in matches is a nonsense...

except managing the mental and physical workload of ABs is one reason why we keep them here in NZ. We don't tend to run our players into the ground, which keeps them fresher and extends their career.

Playing ABs right through Super leaves them gassed for the internationals (Robertson, looking at you buddy)

Having them on the bench though isn't running them into the ground.

    it is mentally.

Their rest weeks are away form the environment, refreshing and relaxing. Prepping for a game and sitting on the bench is less physcially demanding, but doesn't reduce training load or mentally refresh people.

I wonder what sports science would have to say about mental refreshment and everyone else's daily 9-5 grind, with 4 weeks of holidays per year?

That's the point though if it's a grind, it's not performing at your peak. People who get stale stop performing at the highest level. Still very good and solid, but missing the magic.

As mentioned though it's about getting the balance right of resting ABs through Super Rugby - Hansen was completely resting ABs which certainly played it's part in us leading into that last RWC where we performed poorly, we finished bottom of the Rugby Championship, then hardly fired a shot at the RWC... South Africa didn't go completely over the top resting their international players & won both the RC and the RWC.

you ... know we beat SA at the RWC 2019 right?

I don't agree with yoru argument. I think we rest players for two reasons; to freshen them for the internationals, and because it is part of the value proposition in NZ. Play here, centrlaly contracted, and you play what 12 Super (plus playoffs) 10-ish AB games, and a handful of NPC. That's a workload people can thrive on.

You can see where players play too much. It gets into the grind, they lose their ability to lift, and it's all a bit samey.

Boks won the 2019 RWC though beating the poms by 20points in the final.

Yeah, agree that players can play too much, reckon resting them for whole matches isn't the solution - as mentioned put the ABs on the bench & lessen their work load at practice leading up to a match through the week... also after an end of year tour to the UK the ABs have at least 6 weeks off or more until they start playing Super rugby.

    @Canes4life I wish, but no.

Edit: for @Number-10, @Higgins and others who may be able to go:

The Hurricanes Under 20 team is playing an unidentified Hawkes Bay XV team (I assume that's mostly our Academy team and some Magpies).

Kick-off is at 6:00pm at the Hawke's Bay Rugby High Performance Centre (3 Orotu Drive, Parklands).

@Duluth Fuck that is a lot of players in one season, I would love to see the number of players each team has fielded so far.

@Canes4life Looking at the Magpies' instagram/FB, the Canes U20s are playing the Hawke's Bay Academy squad and some wider, WTG members, minus the players who are in the Hurricanes U20s (Flanders, Godfrey etc). Our first five seems to be Hoera Stephenson (the Magpies page has him kicking at goal in the "stories").

@Stargazer @canes4life Sorry I was unable to make it there either, domestic duties prevent that and I have two times later this week requiring relief from them so not worth even considering requesting for tonight's game, even if I had known about it!

Here is a bit about the match I have discovered in the HBToday

@Higgins Thanks for posting that. I checked the HBT at lunch time and it wasn't there, yet.

I had already posted the squad in the 2022 Hawke's Bay Representative Rugby thread.

@Canes4life Two Wairarapa College old boys. Josh Syms is a forme Wai-Bush Head Coach, so will probably know them via his Wairarapa connections.

@Canes4life I have watched Isaac for the last few years as he plied his trade with my Axemen. Even went on that Hurricanes Development Trip to Japan but did not seem to get the breaks with Wellington come the rep season. Maybe they think he is a little on the slight side body wise compared to some of the bigger halfbacks. Here is an interesting feature on this well spoken young man

I see Darren Larsen is the head coach so expect it will see all 13 of the Wellington players in the squad shoe horned into the starting line up with the remainder (12 Manawatu, 7 HB and 1 Wanganui) fighting over the crumbs. Oh Mr. Larsen will probably shove in a few other Wellington Academy players as well.
