If a toss up between Nareki and Rayasi for a squad member back, then I'd prefer they put some time into the latter. Both have the same kicking skills so mostly I think it's the old adage of a good big man beats a good little one.

Leicester is ahead of them both for development I suspect.
And call me a sizeist, but you gotta be big to play in the AB back 3, because we are regressing so defence is key for the ABs.

Nareki is probably having one of those flash-in-a-pan seasons like Ben Lam did a couple of years ago. And do we miss him now?

Yeah have to agree. He has been around for a few seasons now and this has been his first properly good year. If he is just as good next year then mabie...

@mackerzzzz he's stepped up a bit this year but was still very good last year, scored two or three against the crusaders last year over the two games, score a screamer in the comeback over the chiefs, there are highlights out there but you have to work out which ones are this year and which are last

@mackerzzzz With Nareki it's a bit the same as with Laumape. Has a few good games during a season, and suddenly he's been good all season, while in reality, he didn't do anything noticeable (good or bad) in the majority of games. In 2021, everyone suddenly noticed Nareki because he scored a hat-trick against the Chiefs. Then many games nothing special on attack and some dodgy defence at times, and then he has several good games against Aussie teams, and suddenly some people (including in the media) start talking about the ABs. It's crazy.

@stargazer i think the truth is somewhere in between, ive watched every game hes played in the last two years and my gut instinct was the other way, generally really solid, gets over the line in most games, very good on defence mostly and then every fourth or fifth game has a rough one

The ABs have a pretty extensive record of selecting wingers off the back of a “flash in the pan” season.
    NMS
    Naholo
    Reece
    Clarke

Even Ioane was selected without multiple years of super rugby.

Jordie, Jordan and Bridge are the only recent wingers i can think of who have been selected after long periods in Super rugby. Arguably Jordie and Bridge shouldn’t have been selected as anything other than back ups on the wing and Jordan should have been selected earlier when he had a couple of good super seasons.

just pick the two quickest guys who can beat a man and be done with it.

Stop picking plodders because they are apparently good under the highball because the previous coach was spooked by 2009.

Stop picking plodders because they can kick.

Pick jets who can create something for themselves.

It's weird how myths grow eh? Jordan had played 2 seasons of SR before he was selected. In his first season he probably only had a handful of games didn't he? What a loooooong period.

@bones and Bridge first played for the Saders in 2017 and then made the ABs in 2018!

Barrett was selected as an apprentice in the ABs before he'd even made his SR debut 😁

He was then selected for the ABs the following year, the same year he made his SR debut.

Edit: all of which supports puku's point!

Compared to some of those other guys who came out of nowhere and made the ABs, Jordan’s 2 super seasons was a relatively long time. Especially when you consider he missed 2018 super season because of injury.

Bridge was 2 seasons as well.

The Jordie reference was more about him being selected as a specialist wing in 2020. He should have been at 15 so it’s probably irrelevant. But as pointed out he came in as a utility from npc so is also a good example.

Anyway, my point was that it is silly to write guys off from AB selection because they have only played a single super season. Especially wingers.
